He's gone to control a high ball

but, if you try and control a high ball, with studs up, and two feet off the ground, and you miss, and clatter someone, you're walking. not saying it's right, just saying those are the rules.

I didn't see Nani's sending off, but thought the RM disallowed goal in the first half should have stood - do refs try to balance decisions they think they made badly?

As a very wise man once said:

'Oh you can’t put your foot up in Europe
You can’t show your studs on the ‘nent
They take a dim view of a slightly raised shoe
So think on if you’re up against Ghent, my lad
Think on if you’re up against Ghent'

Shame, up until the sending off they were brilliant.

Ruined a fantastic game.

Utd just don't have the quality to compete outside of the first 11 - Ashley Young, & Valencia compared to Modric & Kaka

It was a poor first half. No sense kidding ourselves that the ref ruined a classic. Nani had time to take his foot down. He gambled and lost. It'll be interesting to hear what Fergie has to say. 😀

Never a red, went for the ball, momentum took into a Madrid player who was just standing watching.

The best team lost....?

I'm guessing Mourinho & Ronaldo are worried they might've missed out on jobs in Manchester next season

Mourinho feathering his nest with the fans for when Fergie finally retires there.

Bad luck MU fans. Shame when a decision makes such an impact - but it doesn't matter, the refs decision, is the refs decision and nothing else matters. Pity because that was a good game until that point.

Jose playing all his CV cards now!

It was just a high foot, usually just a free-kick. It wasnt even a tackle as the other bloke didnt have the ball and wasnt making any effort to get it.

PANZER for Keane.

Wearing my ex-ref's hat; keano has it spot on. If he raises his foot that high and catches someone he must be aware he will be sent off, and Ferguson knows it too.

Keano just disagrees with anything Southgate or AC says nowadays! I've seriously thought he was going to slap them in recent punditry. Saw Southgate in Brum the other week and nearly went over and mentioned it to him! He was having his breakfast at the time and thought better of it.

Just seen replay, correct decision from the ref imo, foot way too high and into the spanish geezers chest, should be done for assault!

the player knew it was a close call that's why he feigned injury.

If Roy Keane reckons it's a red card then it's a red card.

Look at the replay - Nani actually extends his leg after impact ... So attempts to maximise the impact

Retired referee Dermot Gallagher on BBC Radio 5 live: "[The decision was] harsh to say the least but in fairness the Real player did Nani no favours whatsoever. At worst Nani catches the underside of his arm, certainly not the ribs as the guy has gone down and shown.

"I can't reiterate enough that he [Nani] is watching the ball over his shoulder, there was no malice in him. At worst it was a yellow for dangerous play, but if I was refereeing that game I cannot see what stretch of the imagination where I would have sent him off for that."

crap way to decide a game. no malice not a bad tempered game and certainly the key moment ..shame we are discussing ref and not two great teams / players/matches

Spanish telly looking at the game now. Ramos should have conceded 3 penalties. 1. for holding Welbeck's shirt. 2. for the handball in the box, 3. for tripping someone near the end.

Not a sending off for me but where was United's resilience? - it looked inevitable that Madrid would win after the sending off.

Ferguson is lauded as a football tactician but he was unable to organise his 10 men to put up a viable defense. Out-thought by The Special One whose tactical nous is commonly derided.

Hope that Dortmund win the pot

Keane called the card right, and Nani knew what he'd done so faked injury and stayed down himself.
And it was a good save from Raphael, but could easily have been a penalty and another red if the ref had seen it.
Utd lucky to finish the game with 10 men.
But it's not about the number of players at the end, it's about the number of goals. And Madrid got two to utd's one, that's all that really matters.

The saddest part is that fergie bottled it with his team selection for another big euro game. They were there for the taking at the back. When the dust settles, hell be left wondering "what if" about picking Nani over Rooney. It's a real low to go out on, but he's not gonna be there for ever . Mourinho certainly looked like he knew there's a job available soon.

Could have gone either way in the end, had an air of inevitability about it once Nani got the red, unfortunately. Should have the experience to know you can't risk raising your foot that high with a European ref, rightly or wrongly.

Mourinho after the match was pretty funny, a lot of the time you hate him when he's in charge of the other team and think him a ****t, if he's in charge of your team, well at least he's your ****t.

why blame the Ref? Man U are never gracious in defeat. Same with Fergie, blame something else but when they win in extra time? Lol

It makes me smile that Arbeloa is a former Liverpool player.

Oh the ironing of Man U fans whining about refereeing decisions and play acting/exaggerating fouls, especially where Nani is involved. 🙂

I predict 22 men will run around, kick a ball and each other a bit. Try to deceive the ref and the losers will blame it all on the officials

Prescient!
