Trump is petty and vindictive, he knows he's lost, but also knows that he can screw Biden and the democrats over by claiming fraud and using campaign finance (rather than his own money) to do it. This allows him to falsely emerge with his reputation unscathed (at least to a significant number of his followers) for no cost and significant strategic gain.

It sets him up for all manner of things from lawsuit evasion, to business dealings to another run or even a family member to run, all at no cost to either his personal, financial or political capital.

Trump is, unfortunately, quite shrewd when it comes to these kind of games. I don't believe for a moment that there isn't a broader game afoot than what's directly in front of us. He can't win the 2020 election. He knows this and has probably known this for a long time. The question is, what is he really up to?

You should NEVER underestimate your enemy - the Democrats have now done this twice! The first time they lost badly - the second time they were damn lucky to win. What more evidence do you need to understand that Trump is a game day player.

He can’t win the 2020 election. He knows this and has probably known this for a long time. The question is, what is he really up to?

According to leaks from White House insiders, he was genuinely convinced he was going to win because he was presented with partisan polls showing he was leading, plus his aides were all too scared to give him any bad news so he only got good news. He is now shocked by the realization that he lost and flailing around wildly. I don't think there's any strategy involved, he's just desperate to try anything and Guiliani and other online cranks keep filling his head with dumb ideas. If anyone tries to tell him how crazy they are, he sacks them. The idea that he was a genius political strategist was always nonsense, he just has a very good instinct for finding what riles up an audience and then hammering away at it. His only strategy is to make people angry, but that didn't work this time around and he has no idea what else to do.

3. Trump and Giuliani are geniuses. They are setting up a play to a stacked Supreme Court they know will come down on their side.

They can't take "new" evidence to Supreme Court. They need to present whatever they have in lower courts first. So far they haven't. They also need to be granted approval to appeal.

Don't underestimate the legal profession's adherence to law above political persuasion.

Slowoldman - 3 certainly isn't my choice of outcome, but I have a gnawing doubt that US politics (Including politically appointed courts) is completely corrupt.

They can’t take “new” evidence to Supreme Court.

As I understand it, the lower courts have basically just said that there isn't a case to answer, so any claims that there is evidence are moot. The Supreme Court would only be able to review that decision. If they found that there was a case to answer, then it would be sent back to the lower court to hear evidence and make a judgement.

Beautiful summary of the PA case from this guy on TikTok:

"Imagine this is a horse race: they didn't lose because their horse was too slow; they lost because they didn't bring a horse."

😂🤣

Of course, one of their main bones of contention was voters being allowed to correct their ballots..

Especially since one of their arguments has been that absentee ballots should be thrown out because Election staff let voters correct mistakes on ballots. Irony is dead.

Indeed.

I've gone from "Yay Biden!" to "He couldn't could he?" to "He's got a masterplan to steal this and the GOP are in on it" to "He's a hopeless clown and  he's doing all this for the grift and/or they're flailing around like demented fools because they have nothing and him and Rudi are going to jail.."

It's over bar the shouting *touches wood because, well, orange shitgibbon*

Sometime, only sometimes, this is worth the pain for the lines that come out:

"Perhaps opposing counsel bills by the chortle."

I can't believe agent orange can possibly come out of this looking like anything less than the worlds biggest asshole, but that hasn't stopped him over the last four plus years.

1. Trump knows he’s lost, and the legal cases are just an excuse to keep fundraising to pay off his debts. Nobody could unintentionally play such a poor legal strategy.

2. Trumps legal team really are that useless, and we are seeing the flailing of a deluded mad rich boy, pandered to by his lackeys.

3. Trump and Giuliani are geniuses. They are setting up a play to a stacked Supreme Court they know will come down on their side.

4. He’s in so deep He can’t see any other option.

5. He's planning on creating continuous and escalating disruption and damage, then use the potential ceasing of this as part of a negotiation for whatever deal it is he's after (protection from prosecution, investigation etc).

I remember my kids doing similar when they were toddlers.

I've been wondering exactly this..

If he knows he's going to be in all kinds of legal shit once he's no longer president, quietly saying to Biden 'I tell you what, I'll start playing ball with you if you guarantee me some kind of immunity' probably makes some kind of sense

Hopefully Biden tells him to piss right off, but for sake of harmony in the US he may see it as the smart play.

Not sure it'll be up to Biden. It's NY state that's currently probing his finances.

Well the boys in black will happily guide him out of the office in January anyway.  I just hope Biden us building a watertight lock-him-up case for when he's out

Assuming that this can actually be switched off? Some of the people involved seem to be on a mission to the death!

Biden could grant immunity to trump for federal charges; state charges are separate and different.
I'm sure Biden could attempt to influence Cy Vance and Letitia James, for example, but why should he?
He has a clear understanding of how government should operate and will not leave himself open to accusations of attempting to block state prosecutions of trump.

but for sake of harmony in the US he may see it as the smart play.

It would be anything but a smart play; enabling trump and his acolytes to sayshout '...no case to answer; always innocent'.
Would also undermine the authority of state Attorneys General.
A mix of those two outcomes would be Dante's seventh circle of hell.

It's certification day today (mostly anyway). And the thing that is still giving me the willies (now i think about it), is what happens if one or more states refuses to certify the vote. As I see it a hail mary option for Trump is to disrupt the electoral college process so that ultimately the house votes on the prez (or somesuch) which the Reps win as it's by state delegation, not individual representatives.

Still seems to be like a massive, massive longshot but gotta believe he'll try, after all he has literally nothing to lose. I'll need to do some more research, but if anyone can enlighten me as to the likeliness of this happening, viability etc that'd be great.

As mentioned above Federal pardons (like Biden, or indeed Pence were Trump to resign, might dole out) don't apply to state level prosecutions, and all the stuff Trump is facing is out of NY, ironically Rudi's old stomping ground..

Perhaps they too are concerned about future litigation.

dantsw13 - interesting approach but, unless they have a high quality election lawyer fronting this, I can't see it gaining much traction but...good effort!

It has been utterly fascinating to watch unfold. I still can’t believe nobody has stepped up and simply called out the bullshit. It’s funny and depressing in equal measures. The sheer amount of time energy, money and resources spent on this tomfoolery. If even 1% of that had been used to tackle Covid, gun control or police brutality the results would’ve been amazing.

jamze, woo hoo!!
The door is beginning to close.
Interesting that rush limbaugh is publicly saying that time is fast running out for trump's legal team to bring out the evidence; trump awarded him the medal of honour last year (for sycophancy) and he's been vociferous in support and uses his radio show to push the trump myth.

Oh, and PA supreme court rejected the appeal I think. Gave the legal team a dressing down, said stop raising all these separate cases - if you have something then raise it.

Not sure - losing track of all these cases 🙂

Sooo happy about Michigan. As I see it PA certifies and then Arizona and that's pretty much that. Law seems pretty much to be that even if the legislatures wanted to send their own electors,  they couldn't do it without actually changing the law in each state to allow it. And in states with Democrat governors they would just use their power of veto and the Republican legislatures don't have 2/3 to overturn the veto.

SCOTUS is a busted flush. As I understand it their job is to rule on lower court judgements, not to unilaterally decide an election, so that's not an option. The PA loss is being appealed on a technicality, no succour there.

He's even lost the likes of Carlson and Limbaugh!

Unless they're about to pull a massive rabbit out of a very large hat, they're looking washed up and Rudi can focus more time into that FBI probe re him consortium with Russian spies..

EDIT - was going to amend spell check's consortium to consorting, but realised consortium actually makes a lot of sense. Eh Vladimir?

You think? She's always struck me as the sort of woman who'll stand by her man. Through thick and thin. Till death do us part*

NOT!

Haha, she'll dump the orange freak so fast he'll still be spinning when he gets handed the papers. Though not convinced there'll actually be much for them to divvy up..

* "Yes darlink, haff another burger. In fact have two. Three even, with lots and lots of fries"

My prediction?
Library, revolver, full fat coke.
He cannot face his name and reputation being shredded because that's what will happen.
I think the odds are better than evens.
Time to light a prayer candle - not for trump.

that’s about as bigly a concession as we will get from Trump.

On to the dodgy pardons and random executive orders phase

Great stuff on Twitter about how he's been worrying that his legal team are incompetent and might be making him look bad. Really?
