If someone I don't know starts following me do I follow them (they look like a real person not marketing/spam account)?

I've looked at their posts and there's nothing I'd normally be 'interested' in and I've no idea why they picked me.

Happened to me twice today.

I don't follow them back if it looks like just marketing thing. I think a lot of companies will follow loads of people, and even if just a small percentage follow them back (or even look at their page) they're getting seen by people.

It happened to me lots in one week, and then not for ages.

If someone follows me, I check them out. If they're spam they get blocked, if they're interesting they get followed, if they're neither of these, they get ignored.

There's no onus to blindly follow people who follow you (it's not Facebook). And if there was, I'd probably ignore it.

fair enough.

Still a bit non-plussed why some bloke in Hawaii woudl pick me.

Maybe just to taunt me with his endless posts about how nice the weather is...

A lot are bots or automated accounts. After talking about the latest episode of Dollhouse, I got someone following me who sells dolls' houses.

Talking about food or controversial topics like homeopathy or religion will generally get you a raft of followers too.

There's no onus to friend people on facebook either, if they friend request you you can ignore them entirely?

A shiny penny to the first person to refer to it as 'Twitterquette'

You can and I often do (or at least, respond with 'sorry, do I know you?') - just seems that a lot of people treat it like Pokémon.

That'd be you, then. (-:

If they're not a friend, I don't make them a friend on farcebook.
If their twitter feed is of no interest I don't follow it.
If they are spammers they get reported and blocked.
Can't get much simpler than that.

Some of it is just phishing for authenticated email addresses... Get a list of yahoo (etc.) addresses, see if there's a twitter etc. a/c, if there is, it's valid email addy, so add it to a more valuable email spam list that will sell for more $$$.

If they're a friend/family but dull, accept the request but then hide their updates 🙂
