OK so I have the following:

Old but perfectly functional CRT telly with 2x SCART inputs and a stereo audio input (red and yellow sockets.

DVD Player with SCART and stereo audio output plus an optical output.

Satellite box with stereo, video and RS232 outputs.

Speakers with a 3.5mm jack input (these are speakers for a computer but sound pretty good).

A laptop with wifi and all my music on.

Is there a box that I can get to connect all this up so that I can watch, for instance, iplayer / 4od / downloaded films from the laptop on the telly with the sound on the speakers, with the laptop connected over wifi to the box? Would also like to play music to the speakers wirelessly and have sound from the satellite box and dvd player go through the speakers.

Anyone know if this is possible and could point me to a suitable box?

Cheers!

nearly, its not going to be pretty though...

I've also a sneaking suspicion that some of those boxes may have additional outputs/inputs? does the TV have audio out?? (headphone socket) does the laptop have an audio in?

I'm off to buy a WD Live box in the morning to try something similar. As I type I'm installing Ubuntu server on an ancient Dell in the hopes I can transfer all my music, films, downloads on to it and play them through the TV over WiFi. Plenty of other plans for the server too.

You should be able to use the WD box stream from the laptop direct or use a usb stick, it'll let you [url=

MrNutt - the TV does have a headphone socket but it's on the front under a flap so don't want a cable coming out of there permanently. There is a microphone jack on the laptop.

@tinribz - Could you let me know how it goes with the WD Live box? I was looking at those last night (along with many others). I guess I could use a composite audio to 3.5mm jack cable for my speakers and a SCART/HDMI for the TV like you say. Not sure if it would work using both outputs at the same time?

Marvin, given that you have inputs that you're opposed to using due to their awkward proximities I'm afraid there is no way that a solution could be deemed satisfactorily attainable. In short, bury the lot in the garden and then put your hand in your pocket, buy lots of exciting new electrical goods and you could actively play a role in dragging this godforsaken country out of recession! It's folk like you that are responsible for the mess this country is in!

scart lead indeed!

Coudnt find the WD box in PC world, clueless staff thought I was making it up.

At the moment I'm wondering if it's worth #80 to play on the TV over wifi when I can just plug a laptop into the back, and now the server is working I think I can stream through the Xbox anyway.
