mate brought round his new iphone 4 last night and was showing me all it could do. showed me this tv catchup thing and said he can watch any normal channel on his phone, with just a minute or two lag. and you dont need a licence!!

when i said i was a bit sceptical about that, he showed me! put itv on and sure enough, it was just a minute or so behind our telly.

whats occurring here? surely you cant watch mainstream telly without a licence now can you?? he said you can use this service on your pc or laptop too.

is there something hes not telling me, or doesnt know himself?

cheers

Pretty sure the TV license terms say any device capable of receiving a TV signal.

But I can't be arsed googling it.

Presumably he has an actual TV at home which he has a license for, so he'd be covered by that.

" each household is required to have one if watching TV as it is being broadcast, although it is not TVCatchup's responsibility to police this."

You still need a licence to watch or record any TV broadcast via aerial, internet, whatever.

Including TVCatchup according to its own website here.

You don't need a licence for BBC iPlayer as it's not a broadcast service.

[EDIT] Doh! ninja'ed

Live broadcast needs a licence, iplayer and other providers on line recordings don't.

Though iPlayer, the BBC websites and BBC Radio are all funded from the license fee, so if you do use them without a license then you're a sponging git! 😉

if its got a delay isn't it just like watching something thats been recorded on iplayer, hence you wouldn't need a licence?

Delay isn't a recording though, all TV has a delay.

aye looks like youre sposed to have a licence then. which he does at home, so i spose thats ok. but...... he didnt put any personal details in when he signed up, so its an easy one to get out of should you believe that the BBC are r*bbing b*st*rds and you dont wish to give them your money 🙂

Maybe they should offer a version without the eight BBC channels for people who feel strongly about it?

Why not suggest it on their forum?

You'll still need a licence for the other channels though.
