Anyone done it?

Any tips, which airports for example?

(we may have to resort to this for our honeymoon :-/ )

you'll often get to pay most if you just roll up at the airport - most people who do that 'have' to travel and the airlines will price the seat accordingly.

Better off looking online 2-3 days before hand as charter companies will have unused allocation they need to get shot of.

Nil.

Holidays are not sold at airports.

Cheap flights - well this is another issue. The last minute cheap flights are (or were) available from holiday companies who've chartered a plane as a one-off and need to fill the seats. Even if they get a quid for it it's still money they won't have if the plane takes off with empty seats.

That's charter flights only mind, scheduled flights don't work that way. There are ways of getting cheaper flights if you are flexible - google it for more info.

Or just have a holiday in the UK. To be honest your honeymoon should make itself good - you don't need to be in Bar-flippin-bados 🙂

Hmmm, well I know of people who have turned up at say a Thomas Cook desk and picked
up holidays.

It makes some sense I guess in that there must be last minute cancellations etc..

Well fair play, if there is a Thomas Cook desk there then they clearly are selling holidays 🙂

A guy at work tried this last year (can't remeber which airport it was - probably Gatwick) and tried to get a holiday, or a flight and wing it, in the hope of doing it on the cheap. In the end he came home as no-one was prepared to do a deal on either - in the case of the airlines, it appeared that if you didn't pay as-near-to-the-full-price-as-made-no-difference you were more hastle to them than flying with an empty seat.

despite the fact i'm a prolific traveller, i can honestly say that there are a huge number of places in the UK i would rather spend my honeymoon than the locations you tend to get popping up as Thomas Cook last minute deals.

Get yourself up north and see some of the islands (Skye, Islay etc). Rent a nice isolated cottage/cabin/house and spend a couple of weeks together not surrounded by sun seeking British tourists with their tops off.

There are some absolutely beautiful places in Cornwall that I like too, it's like being in the north of France but without having to tolerate the French.

You have a point but unfortunately we don't drive so are extremely limited as to where we can get to easily 🙁

book in advance and you can travel 1st class by train for a very reasonable amount. Although I do see how not being able to get around once you are there would be a problem.

However, public transport in the highlands and islands is actually quite good and even enojyable (polite people, nice views out the window etc).

Do both of you like the mountains? You could get a cheap flight and then the snow train all the way to Chamonix if you fancied a more of an active holiday. We flew and got the snow train a few years back after (due to a driving conviction, a broken arm and a lost driving licence)it transpired at the airport that none of us would actually be able to pick up the car we had hired 😆

With the advent of the authorities needing passenger details from the airlines up front to fly to the US as part of the homeland security act, last minute deals to or through the USA might be a thing of the past.

Well we'd love to splash out but our wedding budget has taken a massive hit recently as we're no longer receiving help from parents that was promised (which would have been fine if we knew they couldn't help from the start, and planned accordingly.... anyway..)

We can still pay for the actual wedding, but the honeymoon may well be dependant on wedding gift donations!
