Thanks Ken, it looks great! Hows the paint holding up? Any chips etc, do you know if its powder coat or enamel?

I think it's enamel and it hasn't chipped yet but I've mainly been riding at Woburn where it's sandy rather than rocky so probably not going to get chipped

Is that a burner frame or a 5 spot? I'm waiting in anticipation of my fleabay Burner frame arriving... slightly nervous that its going to be a wreck!!

I had my 5 spot dones about 2.5 years ago. Had it powder coated at a local outfit well used by MTBers in the Bristol area. It cost me 25 quid and its the most durable powdercoat I've seen on a bike. I stripped and masked it they keyed and coated it.

You'll need to take great care to ensure that the shoulders for the pivot seals to rest on are properly masked. Its not too much of a pain to strip them back again but its a job that requires patience to do properly in small stages.

Did you just use regular tape to do the masking or is there something better?

Did you do the deacals yourself and do they have top clear coat sealing them in?

Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to get the process clear in my head. Don't want to make a mess of it!!

I used a combination of twistable wire, cardboard, wood and metal washers to mask the relevant areas.

Some places use special high temperature masking tape, but when I've used that in the past I found it was a total pain.

I have a friend whos in creative design. He worked up the graphics for me and had some printed for me in vinyl. Cost about 15 quid. They're not protected, but I have three sets 😆 The first is only starting to look tatty now, which is ok, because I'm thinking about changing the colour again, or going raw.

Not all Powder coaters are created equal. Go by reputation and ensure its low temperature PC (most is).

Genuine Turner Decals are only £13.95 from any authorised dealer.

Just had mine done by Argos in their 2-pack.

They did a top notch job. Not cheap, but real peace of mind, they masked the pivots off beautifully and chased and faced the BB & HT and rereamed the ST. They also collect/deliver which adds to the lack of grief.

I'd steer clear of enamel as it chips FAR too easily. Powdercoating is the right answer, but not many bike specific painters do it, and I'm not sure I'd trust my precious Turner to some under-the-arches monkey. The colour range is also pretty limited, especially if you want metallic.

ABC Enamelers & Powdercoating in Nailsea.

A good reputation locally, and they have a substantial RAL colour stock, although not all. They're not bike specialists though, so they don't offer the silver service that argos do. Its pretty much drop off and collect, so it might be a bit too far for you.
