Off to twickenham Saturday, getting the train from derby, that's all good.
However Sundays journey back seems to be a bit odd, route planner states, Twickenham to Waterloo, just over 30 mins then Waterloo to st Pancras as 60 mins? Is that right, is it because there are far fewer tubes on a Sunday etc so it's a worse case scenario time? I appreciate the shitty st p to derby train is slower on a Sunday due to it stopping 48 times or whatever it is.

What way is it suggesting you go? The way I'd go would be Northern Line to Euston and then walk across to St Pancras. But if it thinks you should be changing somewhere then that might explain a delay.

then walk across to St Pancras

Probably assumes he will be pissed and is allowing extra walking time

I'd Twickenham to Vauxhall then change to the Victoria line up to Kings Cross St Pancras

Ok I best post my two journeys as it seems the Saturday also takes an age.
I've purchased a standard super off peak return from belper to twickenham.

Outward takes me to St P as expected then it's a tube to Vauxhall which is 51 mins then a train to twickenham which is 19 mins.

Return is saying Twickenham to Waterloo 33 mins Waterloo to St P 59 mins then the train back to derby.

Can I use any tubes with that ticket?

No idea on the tickets by St P to Vauxhall is nowhere near 51 minutes. 15 at most unless it's actually suspended and they're sticking you on a bus

I assume the ticket is simply a Zone 1 so provided you're not going out to Heathrow and back, it should be covering you for any reasonable route within Zone 1 (which includes Vauxhall, Waterloo & St Pancras).

The easiets / most direct is simply Victoria Line from Vauxhall, it's 7 stops but if they've got CrossRail work going on at Victoria then you might find it's closed at some point. If you end up going to Waterloo it's Northern Line and then a 10 minute walk along Euston Road from Euston mainline to St Pancras.

Number 59 bus 22 minutes Waterloo to St Pancras and you don't have to go down in the dank tube station.

There won't be any Crossrail work at Victoria station, and if on Vic line ie change at Vauxhall then if they're non stopping due to VSU works you'll gain as the train will go through the station at about 10mph.
The reason why the website is suggesting a longer trip from Waterloo might be because there'll be a full train arriving which will take a bit longer time to get onto a tube.
Alternatively walk into Richmond and get a fast train into town and change at Vauxhall or even head up to Hounslow East and get the Picc.
[edit] realised you're travelling back on Sunday.

I believe that if you have a little * after the destination it's valid for travel across London via any reasonable route.

Are the hour gaps just the times between your train arriving in one terminus and departing the other? They give you loads of time to get across town if you're on fixed train tickets.

Check the weekend map on TFL to show any closures or disruption.

Oh and please stand on the right. Thanks.

I would get the northern line from Waterloo to Euston and walk to St P. as Crazy legs suggests.
Tbh If you do have the time to spare you could walk from Waterloo to St. P in an hour. Pass a couple of nice pubs en route......

Euston and walk is an option, the 'fast route' is Bakerloo to Oxford Street and then cross to Victoria line to go to KX/SP; the two platforms are about 10 yards apart.

Planners always allow way extra for waiting and walking, if you walked onto a tube at each station I reckon it's no more than 15 mins.

Used to do this a fair bit. Vauxhall/Victoria line wins by 5 mins. Takes longer to find the Bakerloo from Waterloo than Vic from Vaux, and you've got a change.

But whichever you opt for you MUST get in the last carriage on the Victoria tube, and get off via the last left-hand door, which opens next to the exit you want for st panc. Other exits are available if you want to spend an unnecessary 5 mins walking round under kings cross. Be warned, I can expand on these points at considerable length. So surely here endeth the thread.

Is this a stealth "I'm off the rugby on Saturday" humble brag?

😉 I'm very jealous by the way, enjoy!

Sometimes better to swim against the tide of people. Everyone will walk to Twickenham train station and then ride back to Waterloo.

I’d Twickenham to Vauxhall then change to the Victoria line up to Kings Cross St Pancras

is the optimal solution for that route.

But... I'd walk to Hounslow and take the piccadilly line direct to Kings X instead. 37 minute walk. You will take longer than that to get from the Stadium onto a Waterloo train. Thank me on Monday.

Journey planning software always allows vast amounts of time for any cross-London journey. I presume because it's designed for great-auntie Ethel, with her 2 replacement hips who takes 20 minutes to shuffle down to the station, and people would be grumpy if they continually missed trains it "said they would make".

It definitely doesn't take anything like that long. If you have a Super Off-Peak ticket you can get any train you like, so just rock up and go. I'd also change at Vauxhall and go direct to St Pancras on the Vic line, rather than going into Waterloo, although it's a very easy cross-platform change from Bakerloo to Victoria line at Oxford Circus if you go via Waterloo.

There are lots of works this Sunday in South West London, half of Waterloo is shut, lots of redirected trains and extra stops. That is probably the reason for long journey time.

Yes if it was a Saturday but we'll be travelling Sunday morning/lunch time depending on the quota of ale consumed.

The walk will do you good! Or just catch a bus. And the Waterloo lines have been pretty tragic due to ongoing weekend railworks for months. All trains were stopped until 11AM on a Monday a few weeks ago due to over-running of works on Sunday. The picadilly line serves Heathrow. It will be running a normal service.

"Are the hour gaps just the times between your train arriving in one terminus and departing the other? They give you loads of time to get across town if you’re on fixed train tickets."

What jimdubleyou and taxi25 said. You are using the nationalrail.co.uk ticket site and it is simply stating the time between your first train arriving at Waterloo and your second train leaving St Pancras. It knows a minimum time between stations and gives you train times for the shorter journey that work to meet the longer journey. The time given for tube travel is just the total connection time. NationalRail knows nothing about TfL works. Assuming you are on an Advance fare it will probably only be on the Belper-London segments, so if there are works around Waterloo then use the TfL site to find the best way to St Pancras in time for that train, even if you have to use contactless payment because your ticket might only work on the tube in zone 1. You can use your ticket for one zone 1 transfer usually (as long as it has the *)

The other option for me would be Thameslink from St Pancras Intl to Blackfriars (and vice versa), get off at the SOUTH end of Blackfriars and walk to Waterloo. 15 mins walk tops.
