I recently purchased some Crgahoppers Kiwi zip off trousers for walking and occasional steeper stuff. Gotta say these are singularly the most uncomfortable leg garments I have ever worn.

My legs got really hot in them very quickly, even though it was just 'mild' outside, but too breezy to use as shorts. They then clung to my legs especially the knees, where the zip made this worse. Not a good experience.

So, any suggestions for a suitable alternative? Next outing is Dartmoor in September so something suitable for hot/cold/wet/dry as I'm sure we'll get it all.

Ta 🙂

softshells, like montylikesbeer has pointed out. But they might be too warm if the winds not blowing or its not pretty cold. Montane Terra pants are a bit lighter and well-rated. Get a cheapy pair of waterproof over trousers in case it throws down.

Try Berghaus Stasis too. Cheapish, tough, comfortable and stretchy. Wear them year round for hill walking and scrambling in Wales. Fine for me in subzero temps and fine in the warm up until the point I'd wear shorts anyway

I use a pair of the trouser version of Endura Humvees. Light enough, windproof, dry quickly, zip up pockets and a big map pocket. Works for me. Hate those zip off trousers, zip's always in the wrong place.

The ones I have aren't bad. The zip off bit is above the knee (on me - 5'10", 30-32 leg) so hasn't ever become irritating. When they're shorts they certainly are short and you do end up looking like yer dad on the beach. But no worries, most people out walking/rambling/scrambling look a bit odd anyway. I think they're from Mountain Warehouse and are made by MountainLife. Only cost about £20-25. They dry very quickly too when they do get wet and seem to be fairly cool in warmer weather.
