I've never liked my card details to be stored on someone else's server so make a point of deleting them when the transaction's through. However, I recently bought something from PC World and there's no delete option for stored card details (or accounts as a whole). I've tried the usual 16 0s and it won't accept it, in fact any 16 digit number that's not the actual card number seems to be refused (either as an incorrect number or card not recognised).

My partner's father has recently bought something from Dixons (the same company) and we're in the same boat here too. I've emailed PC World who say that card details cannot be removed but that their system is secure. Do I have any options? I'm not sure whether the website's run some sort of algorithm that checks the validity of card numbers or if the actually verify it with the card company. Is there a fake card number I can use?

Aren't they breaking the law as you now state that they have no valid reason to continue holding them on your behalf? Breaking the Data Protection Act

The number will have to pass a Luhn check. It is unlikely to validate against the bank on entry, only on authorisation. Unless they have some quite complex BIN rule analysis you can use 4111 1111 1111 1111. Which will pass the luhn check and won't be a valid card

So you go to the website and the transaction is made via the website, and you put in your card details and press the submit button right? At that point the card number is sent in encrypted format to the server and it does its processing in a secure environment and the transaction completes. As a business they have to store customer credit cards securely in order to process transactions. So Im assuming that when you go back to the site, your browser is automatically populating the credit card number when you put your name in the first line? If thats the problem, then its your local machine thats populating that not the server, unless you have some sort of login happening. If it is local, then its just a case of deleting your browsing history and its gone....

Or I may be getting the totally wrong end of the stick! 😀
