We will be in touch
We bought our daughter a small tropical tank last year, which she has 4 very cute Mollies in, they are doing fine, but as they are live bearers and we have one male and three females, we end up with loads of fry every other month or so.
This keeps my little one entertained, we return the live fry back to the fish shop, who were kindly re-homing them for us, but on my last visit with some 40 odd fry, I errr came home with a 130ltr. second hand fish tank!
The tank is heated and filtered, just going to cycle the tank for a few weeks with some of the gravel and filter foam from the other tank before anything goes in ;-0
After leaving the "dog house" with the Mrs and things are getting back to normal.
[Question]
Just wondering what else would be good to mix in with the Mollies, preferably something that is hardy and again live bearers would be good, nothing too big, smaller the better.
Just a thought, would be great to see what everyone else's tank look like, I know we did this here some time back.
Could whack some Platy's and Guppies in there, both are smaller than Mollies.
We started with one small tank, then another, then a 125L one.
Some of the fish get cycled between tanks. Fry go in the small one, when bigger they go in the middle tank, then off to the fish-shop etc etc, there's always a cycle of them on the go!!
Big tank houses the breeding Mollies (2 male, 4 female, all different colours), 7 Platy's (3m, 4f), 2 Penguin Tetra's, 4 Cherry Barbs, 2 Glass Catfish and an albino Bristlenose Plec.
Mid tank currently housing 6 dalmation mollies, small tank housing 20 orange / black spotted fry.
Some swordtails could be a nice addition too.
Most community tropical fish are pretty tough - the question is how often do you want to be returning to the fish shop with babies?
Mind you when I had Mollies most of the babies got eaten - apart from the poor deformed fella who'd grown up in the internal filter 🙁
He couldn't stand the space when I found him and moved him into the tank. I stopped with the Live bearers after that.
I'm tempted to say an Oscar (fish are food not friends).... it would solve any baby problems 😉
Any other community fish will be fine -
Mollies are more top feeders so you'd need some Plecs / Catfish too clean up the bottom of the tank
and then some mid feeders to keep balance - Guppies if you want lots of babies.
Neon tetra's (very pretty but any of that family will be good - dollars or piranha's) get at least a dozen as they prefer to stay in a group.
Another vote for guppies
Get a catfish or two and a couple of loaches and a pleco (all bottom feeders)
Siamese fighting fish are very pretty – but only get a single male and no more, more than one and they fight to the death
Gourami's are good for eating off excess live young, as are angel fish - but they can start eating everything else in the tank and can be very temperature sensitive.
Good choice Swiftacular, I love Tanzies. Had a big tank with some gorgeous specimens in - it's when you look at them very close-up and see just how beautifully marked they are. Would love set another Malawi tank up. They were the only fish I ever made any money on. Had some spectacular wild Haps that became show fish on my local Aquariun shop.
