Have you looked for advance purchase train fares online, these can often be has for a fraction of full quoted price

Nothing available yet it would appear, coming in at £360 for the four of us for a train that gets us there a bit late. If we get the earlier train its £500+ and anytime train is £1200 😯
No wonder everyone still drives!!!

Cycle? You might have to set off a bit earlier though.

Car share with someone already travelling that way? (long shot getting 4 of you in with driver but worth a look).

Don't need to lift share as both me and the bro in law have diesel estate cars so plenty of room and pretty economical in whichever we decide to use. It's a surprise trip for the mrs' 40th so it would have been nice if no one had to drive and we could crack open the champers on the way down.
I've registered for email alerts re the cheap advanced tickets on the train so hopefully that may come off.

Get a family railcard - think it's a third off, kids even more. Costs about £30, pays for itself. Having one also encouraged us to actually do trips by train.

BTW Brighton is a b1tch for parking, if you are going to drive hopefully you'll have dedicated parking where-ever you are staying.

As a wildcard see if there are cheap options to Gatwick (eg bus ?), then pick up a train/connection there.
