We're looking at travel insurance for our 2 week (non-Snowboarding) California trip, but The BMC who we normally use want £140 :-O
anyone have other recommendations, for a decent, non-cowboy, insurer, that isn't astronomic?

Always find the post office fairly cheap, will do an online quote /purchase. Not tried for US though.

I just had a look at the Post Office - doesn't cover Mountain Biking, DOES cover Jet skiing and Quad Biking! 🙄
