Hi All
Need to replace my campervan and owned since new 15 yo Golf with one vehicle. This will be used for daily driving to work, weekend biking and away campervan duties. This will be campervan No5 so have had many different vans down the years.
Really like the look and drive of the Transit custom over the Vivaro/Trafics. Its only me, the dog and the occasional friend. I don't need many comforts so have settled on a short wheelbase as with the simple conversion I have in mind I can easily fit two people and two bikes inside.
Does anyone have a SWB Transit Custom Campervan and any pics?
Any advice on where to buy nearly new vans?
What am I missing please :D?

I have been thinking the same. I am currently running a vito which I love but its very high mileage so I dont want to start converting it. I dont really want a transporter but all the parts (pop top roofs etc) seem to be designed for transporters. Any have any links to sites with conversion kits for Fords?
I'm thinking along the same lines at the moment and want do it with a vito dualiner or something similar really. I want to replace the rear seats with a full width rock n roll bed and fit a pop top roof with a bed in for the kids.
Not bothered about cooker and all that gubbins, just want something we can sleep in the odd night on a weekend but also plenty of room for our twice a year trips to europe/mountains. maybe one of those pull out canopy's would be good also.

we have Transit Custom at work. Everytime I drive it, it makes me sad, because them I have to get into my old Peugeot Expert to drive home. 🙁
Because of this, I've been looking at replacements. Van Monster, (which I think are the retail arm of a medium size hire company) have a decent choice for sale, all over the country at what seem like reasonable prices.

I privately run a LWB new transit custom. It's brilliant. It's the Limited spec which is really worth going for, best feature are the folding electric mirrors but it's very well equipped.
I looked at quite a few conversions at a show a year or so ago. Very impressed and for your needs, it'd be perfect. I'd go for the LWB as that little bit of extra space will definately come in handy. Buying wise, as it's your only vehicle and likely a long term ownership..I'd go pre-regd (We did this and save a fortune for what is a brand new van with 10 miles on the clock)
And driving at the speed limit on A roads sees well over 40mpg.

SWB v LWB; this has to replace my car. 95% of the time it will be just me and bike so SWB is fine. Not even going for a lifting roof. I'm coming from a MWB high roof Sprinter with all mod cons (that a good 20-30 forum members know very well). Really want this to be much, much more basic.
Price wise for a 125hp Trend. Internet says £14-15k for 1-2 years old with 20-50k mileage. New van from main dealer is £21k. Seems almost worth getting a new van.....

No probs Andy. We also have a Vivaro camper, but ours is a proper camper (pop top roof etc) so sounds a bit more than you're after. Plenty of 'day van' threads on this and other forums, that sounds more like what you're after.
Thread hijack, but Andy are you part exing your Golf or selling private ?
Not thought about it Simmy - will probs keep for another 3 months while the van is sorted. 52 plate so 14 1/2 years old. Owned from new, 120k miles, never broken down. 8) Love that car... 😥
If you are near Manchester, give me a shout if and when you are selling the Golf.

Facebook has some good groups. Self build campers etc. Had Transit custom as courtesy van today very pleasant. My future ride when T4 retires
It's worth mentioning at this point that you can download a Body & Equipment Mounting Manual (BEMM) from the Ford Etis webpage ( https://www.etis.ford.com) which details all the mounting points, cable routeing, and other pertinent information for camper conversions. It's used by specialist vehicle manufacturers to build campers, ambulances, etc.
It is very useful. And free. I like free.

You'll get to look at lots of vans from big manufacturers to small converters to help with your planning and thinking. They're actually really good at helping you make up your mind what you don't like and what you don't need.
Thanks I went to the The Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show in February last year. It really is an excellent place for ideas. That BEMM manual looks interesting.
