My son has been contacted by these people and want to come round to discuss
their "free" "industry standard" based training. I dunno, just sounds a bit fishy to me. Noone gets owt for nowt these days and the first entry I looked at on their web site's message board was from someone complaining they have been misled and want their money back.
This is an area my son would love to get into, creating computer games, but I don't think this is the right way.

I think it's Train to Gain. If so they are a recognised provider of modern apprenticeship type training, to 16-19 year olds typically.

Train to Gain is backed by central government (I think) and are targeted with keeping the young NEETs of the unemployment figures by giving them training.

Train to Gain works with those aged 19 + ...nowt to do with NEET as that is my job.

In essence the government - usually involving European money - provide a pot of money for people to do training. Usually it is everyone to level 2 NVQ [National Vocational Qualification] and usually a Three in exceptional cases [serious shortage of workers ] it keeps going.
Dpnding on job the training will be either OSAT - On site training and assesment or college for day release - usually to do with technical certificates such as say Chainsaw ticket or similiar

the training is FREE

At a guess bogus like a modelling contract would be ...not sure what the exact entry requirements are to gaiming industry can check at work tomorrow but always dubious of this type of thing. Especially as young people would love this as a job. I suspect you need a degree in computers and possible even Maths or programming to stand a chance of entry though.

In the UK there has always been an acute nationwide shortage of skilled computer games developers, with most entrants to the industry coming from semi related computer science backgrounds that require additional training to attain the necessary skills and know-how required in today’s fast moving games industry.

Working with you to build your demo portfolio, Train2Game will work with you during your course development with a view to honing your employment skills. We hope that when you qualify, you will have sought to maximize your employment potential within the Games industry both personally and professionally

I notice they make zero pledge about what your employability prospects will be or your actual % chance of getting a job.... IMHO unlikely to lead to employment from a quick skim read

Thanks Junkyard. My thoughts exactly. With my knowledge as a standard database/web developer even I can see how tough it would be to succeed in games development.
