Been spending lockdown training up our youngester to run with the bike and she's getting closer to being a fully fledged trail dog. This means she is getting more adventurous and confident running on and around the trails.
Yesterday, she managed to sod off for a good ten minutes before turning up in a totally different place. This prompted me to think I should look into GPS trackers. I know there's quite a range on the market but I was hoping for some suggetions of trackers, with live tracking, that work well in wooded areas/moorland etc.

She's a collie x shepherd so size or weight isn't really a big issue.

Thanks...

We use Tractive and are pretty pleased with it. Bella has really good recall but new smells in new areas are a big temptation for her.

15% off for you, a month free subscription for us.

Ours is set up to allow our dog walkers to make use of it as well.

The problem with gps trackers is that they often need a phone signal to work. Useless in places like the FofD. I’ve just ‘trained’ mine to casually wander back when they’re ready whilst I frantically blow on their whistle and shout myself hoarse. Y’know, if it’s not too much bother and I’m not inconveniencing you or anything.

Thanks guys, how does the Tractive tracker work in areas of limited signal? We are most often in woodland as sheep are too much of a temptation for Skye to be off lead nearby.

Cheers

It's GPS based so it's generally better than your phone. However, you do need a signal for the phone to be able to see where the dog is.

It has a passive and an active mode. Most of the time it's in passive mode unless we need to pin point exactly where she is (or the wife wants to see how long it might take us to get back).

It can also be remotely set to blink a light and give out a tone for finer tracking.

I'll see what the phone signal is like around our local haunts and go from there... Thanks

I have a Karelian Bear Dog, they are a breed for bear protection/hunting, as a result there are a few in the wilderness areas of the States/Canada on the FB group. They tend to use Garmin GPS based systems which are fairly pricey which is why I've never bothered. I use a Flexi Professional 10m retractable lead when we are deer tracking and run with him when he has a scent.

Bikejoring is a thing with dogs and bikes that keeps them on leads - doesn't look as instagrammy/pink bike worthy as a dog schralping it's joints to bits though
