Okey dokey, we were planning to replace the normal radiator in the bathroom with a towel radiator. I say 'were' as it seems that we can only get radiators that are wall mounted and the pipework needs to come from the wall, or mega expsensive floor mounted ones (also seem to be made from brass) that might be able to utilise the current pipework but more often than not look to be too deep for the space.

This is the sort of thing except we'd like to use our current piework that comes up from the floor and goes into each side of the radiator.

Is there such a thing that our searching has missed??

Yes - we have one similar to this....

Towel Rail

Pipes come straight up from the floor (rather than in from the wall at an angle as shown in this pic)

I would imagine the one in your eBay link is the same as no pipework is shown.

You can purchase the wall mounted radiator and use a 'straight' valve like these to connect your pipes from the floor. They just don't show any connected like that in the brochures because it doesn't look as neat as having pipes from the wall.

I would note, however, that you need to know if you've got some decent supports for the wall mountings, as they can be pretty heavy once filled!

It's not that difficult. We have done 3 ones with both normal CH radiator feed and additional electric elements. Google Vasco. All with conventional plumbing from old rads. All wall mounted with normal 15mm pipes in via TRVs and in different colours. Cheaper ones should be able to do the same thing. Not a problem. On non-brick walls we have mounted them on battens.

Cheers for the answers, we had seen the straight valves but because we hadn't seen a picture of them like had thought we were missing something.

Someone told me that the white towel rails gave off more heat that the chrome ones? Does anyone know if thats true?

Mine are white, but they go with the other things in the room better anyhow. I 'm just wondering whether someone was trying to string me along?

He was taking pants. You can choose towel rails by heat output. And most bathrooms are relatively small with small windows Our bathrooms are the warmest rooms in the house in winter. All with towel rails only.

I have had one fitted but I was in a hotel recently and they had a towel rail like the one you're looking at but it also had an electric element fitted so that it could be used in the summer and then use the central heating water during the cold months.

If I were you I'd be looking at doing something similar so that the towels can be dried out during the warmer weather.

Something like this.

http://www.screwfix.com/p/rica-towel-radiator-heating-element-ip55-2048btu-600w/95112?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Datafeed-_-Heating%20and%20Plumbing-_-Rica%20Towel%20Radiator%20Heating%20Element%20IP55%202048BTU600W#

Tis just a thought and was something I realised I should have done during the installation process and am regretting it now, especially as our central heating is run off a stove back boiler.

Take care with the heat output, towel rails don't give out as much heat for their size as a radiator does.

Have a look at http://www.warmrooms.co.uk/acatalog/ good prices, massive selection and good service. They are also very good with technical advice by phone.

On our chrome towel radiator there are thirteen horizontal bars, but I noticed after it was fitted that it says only 10 bar on the plastic tap on the radiator valve.

The extra 3 bars don't seem to have caused a problem so far though 🙂

Er.... you do realise that "10 bar" is referring to the maximum water pressure?

I try this one whenever the BG bloke comes round to fix something, saying I think this might be the problem. Sometimes they take a while to think about it 🙂

What pepper said - useful occasionally, always there. You know bathroom electrics are a bit special, though?

Electric towel rails for year round use without relying on the central heating system.
