Does anyone know where Met press releases can be read online? (Have tried the website, struggling to find press releases in their entirety).

If that mob outside the temple doesn't disperse, the police will be forced to use their sikh heating missiles.

Thank god! Most of last nights nightshift, some time today and an hour or so of skimming tonight and I've finally reached the end of this thread.
Lots of different opinions on the why's and how's, some good wee jokes and some genuinely depressing posts, pics etc.
Mental. Thank god it doesn't seem to be catching on up here!!
So, in order: guy was carrying a gun, don't know the exact circs of him being shot but he was known to the cops, was carrying a gun and is now dead. Sorry for his family and that but what do you expect..
Causes of all this: too many to list, but see it all every day in my job, basically boils down folk not having any sense of personal responsibility.. Having weans left right and centre but not working and wanting benefits to pay for everything, not needing to work for a living etc.. Parents not giving a Ross about where or what their weans are doing.. Etc. Used to get to me but have realised no point getting upset about it.. They're not gonna change- don't want to.
Sorting it out: go in hard, water cannon, the works.. Shame it's not gonna happen!

Zulu-Eleven - thankyou. That's the Met one I found earlier - there must be more press releases about Mark Duggan than that? Unless it's only the IPCC ones?

A friend suggested we send The Wurzels in on a combine harvester, with water cannons full of sleeping cider.

> is that all the coppers in this country are hate-filled, bent liers.
Who made this claim? On what thread? I haven't seen it.

sorry Druidh - normally you are a reasonable guy but thats a gross distortion of peoples positions. No one has said that at all.

Sorry - I couldn't be arsed going through all 30-odd pages for you, but here's a few to keep you going.

grum - Member
their accounts cannot necessarily be trusted and it's no wonder people feel angry/disillusioned with the police.

Am I the only one who frankly doesn't believe a bloody word the police say?

possible over hyped police who shoot first and ask questions afterwards.

Just for the record. My uncle was a senior met copper, my aunt and two cousins also were coppers, I have friends who are coppers. I have a great deal of respect for coppers.

Unfortunately after shooting incidents the coppers feel (quite possibly because they are at risk of criminal charges) - that they have to show their decision was correct. I would far prefer a "no fault" investigation into police shootings - there have been too many innocent folk shot and we need to know why to prevent it happening again. Putting the cops in a situation where they feel they have to cover it up means we don't get to the truth. Now this guy was not innocent it would appear but given previous incidents and the various statements and leaks it looks like an all too familiar pattern.

deMenezes, Harry Stanley, and a good few others others. In some of these there was clear evidence of the armed police lying.

given all that I think it is right to be sceptical of the police claims

TJ, you say that like any copper could be issued a gun and can basically go and shoot someone if he feels threatened, I think there is a bit more training goes into SO19.

Just need to get this off of my chest, to those following this thread who 8 months ago had nothing but derogatory remarks to make about London's firefighters during our industrial dispute. Are we working hard enough for you yet?

Not aimed at anyone in particular.

Are you ****. Divisional headquarters is about 200 yards on the other side of the road from Reeves Corner in Croydon, but you guys let it burn for about an hour before rolling up and making a half-arsed attempt to put it out. What the **** were you doing - watching it on the telly ffs ?

Ernie.. Does divisional hq have units there or is it just an hq? Even if they do were there tenders in the station?
Perhaps they were off dealing with one of the many other calls that doubtless was in progress?

It certainly does althepal, it's a fully operational fire station, my comment was tongue in cheek - I'm a big fan of our often under appreciated firefighters. Although what I said about it being only a few hundred yards the other side from the scene of the Reeves Corner fire is true - they were prevented from attending as their safety could not be assured.

Quite a few areas of London managed to organise vigilante groups last night to deter people from damaging their local areas. Maybe not the correct thing to do in the eyes of the law but well done to them.

And some on this site would have you believe that David Cameron's "big society" was all a fantasy ๐Ÿ˜‰

oh and i think an armed guard and video camera operator with every fire crew attending riot fires .... if your filmed attacking the fire crew you are shot on sight ! you lost your human rights when you started attacking the firecrew in my eyes !

Ah I see Zulu-Eleven, what we are witnessing is a Tory plan falling into place.

Good point and I'm glad that you made it.

My beef is with the management who decided you needed less appliances but more expensive ones through a fraudulent-PFI arrangement.

Personally I wouldn't want to fight ferocious fires with the risk of some mouth-breather throwing half-bricks at me. Firefighters here in Salford have that risk 365 days a year.

got it - we cant deploy the army to the streets as thats not really a good solution to the problem to shoot all the rioters (sorry theiving scumbags) BUT

use the army to protect the firebrigade ....

Vigilante groups are probably the only way out of this long term as they can be far quicker to respond than the police.
Their presence should be enough to deter most of the wasters causing the problems. I am thinking of a united community more than hit squads dealing out beatings to random hoodies.

One of the causes of the disaffection is a belief that some communities are policed differently to others. How is summary justice without order going to improve that, what happens when community defence groups start attacking each other, who decides who's guilty and innocent.

ivantate - As I said before - when does public spiritedness become vigilanteism?

Personally, I'd say the difference is that it only becomes vigilanteism if people take it unto themselves to dish out "justice" rather than limiting themselves to preventing crime/disorder and apprehending lawbreakers - and that the law is on their side in doing so (indeed, always has been)

cba reading all that, so apologies if the point's been made before, but has anybody considered the idea that it's all a setup by somebody within the police in order to create public support for the idea that police funding and numbers should be increased?

That's a hell of a conspiracy theory - Police shooting a man dead to spark civil unrest purely to keep their funding up? :-\
