Drawing from any decade, from any genre, and without any need to defend your choices, what would they be?

The only criterion is that they must have been a series (i.e. no one-offs). Try to list them in order of preference. If certain years were good, but not others, please be specific (e.g. The Simpsons, seasons 2-10).

1. Mad Men
2. Northern Exposure
3. The Young Pope
4. M*A*S*H
5. Sherlock Holmes (with Jeremy Brett)
6. Yes Minister/Prime Minister
7. SCTV
8. Stranger Things
9. The Simpsons (seasons 2-10)
10. Archer

Not sure on the other 9 yet, but I'll join the OP in listing the heinously under-remembered Northern Exposure as one of mine.

I'm proud to say the only 'shows' I've watched in my adult life are Northern Exposure and Father Ted. I did watch Blackadder when I was a kid, and Red Dwarf.

TV is a waste of time generally. Chewing gum for the eyes.

No mention of Dallas? Sure it was never hip and trendy but I'm struggling to recall another tv moment that got the public attention like "Who shot JR"

Oh and Morecambe and Wise Xmas Specials.

I'll tell you what definitely is a waste of time. Posting a comment in a thread on something you have no interest in, just to tell us your views on said thing.

No-one mentioning Scrubs? Outstanding TV show. Comedy and poignancy in each episode, although sometimes a lot more of one than the other...

Twin Peaks
Black Books
Futurama
Blackadder
Wolf Hall
Samurai Jack
Breaking Bad
Archer
Game of Thrones
Brass Eye

Of those I would say that Breaking Bad is the finest. Probably due to consistency, the other multi-season shows have some flaws. I can highly recommend watching Twin Peaks in a weekend though, it smashes you up 🙂

The Singing Detective - most Dennis Potter stuff was brilliant; like nothing else that had been on TV.
I also love stuff where catchphrases, or quotes stay with you - I still say "It were Mark Binney, miss!"

Where do these come from:
1. "Where we goin now?" in Brummy accent, or was it North East?
2. "Play with me Daddy" in erm, Manc, was it?
3. "At your age? At my age? Young man!"
4. "Who pushed air though poo?!"

GBH

Was brilliant, I haven't watched it since it was actually broadcast, however I have found it on itunes for 5.99, so it is now downloading 🙂

It will be interesting to see if it has stood the test of time, I think it probably will, but the scripting and slickness of some big budget series over the past 10-15 years has really upped the game and expectations.

OK as no-one's playing 😆

[s]1. "Where we goin now?" in Brummy accent, or was it North East?[/s]
2. "Play with me Daddy" in erm, Manc, was it? Alan Bleasedale's GBH (with Robert Lindsay)
3. "At your age? At my age? Young man!" Harry Enfield's randy old ladies
4. "Who pushed air though poo?!" McKenzie Crook's gym teacher in Barking

then there was Cracker.
(and the Shield!)
