Why I am so wound up I can't fathom, maybe it's the sense of injustice or maybe it's because I'm not a team player, anyway.
I miss a "team meeting" this morning at work due to a meeting elsewhere and get back in later.
I get a friendly nudge from a big boss about logging out of a shared computer at work as I don't always do it (the computer in question is one at a "hot desk").
"OK" says I.
Then I get a more formal reminder from another boss, this is a bit odd but again I say noted.
Then I get a ****ty formerly worded email from an upper middle manager about it....
To cut a long story short, if you don't log out it goes into a password protected screen saver, and other people can't log on, unless they re-start the computer -two minute job that involves hitting the big button on the computer- we all know this?!?!?
But a pretty female temp who has been doing the same job for 18 months and uses the computer in question a lot moaned that she can't do her work as she can't get at the computer to the big boss who with his tongue lolling out opted to dicuss my shortcoming around this in a mass team meeting?!??! Talk about airing your dirty laundry (I am aware of the irony of posting this on a forum) I am so ****ed off that she can flutter her eyelids and get a whole local govt department together to discuss the oh so vital issue of her having to hit a re-set button occasinally and my being a terrible perosn because of it. Jesus do people have no perspective!

People use my computer as some kind of 'hot-desking' facility as I frequently get called away from the office to attend to another part of our site. I come back ten minutes later and some moron's logged me out and logged themselves on to check their e-mail and it takes me another five minutes to shove them off my desk and log back in again.
To discourage people from using my workstation I've blacked out bits of the keyboard with a permanent marker 'cos a lot of office workers aren't really as good at touch typing as they think they are 😈

YOU missed the meeting and it was YOU who forgot to log off. I suggest you either remember to go to meetings and remember to log off OR get a thicker skin. Just take heart in the fact that you will probably all be out of a job come the summer when Mr Cameron gets in, even the pretty tart. I hope this helps 🙂
You must remember this is a two way street, perhaps you should log any occasion she forgets to log off.
Also log any other minor infractions, date, time, infraction etc. Amo for next time she gets smart. Petty time wasting but you need to watch your back with some people. (Used to work for a big company where this sort of thing went on a lot).

Local government? Your boss needs to hire in some expensive contractors who specialise in time and motion studies.
Does you logging out or her hitting re-set take the most time?
Are you inadvertantly helping to protect jobs in an area where the cost cutting axe is already falling or are you costing all us tax payers unnecessarily?
The staff where i work now just tell you about all of thier petty moans and gripes to your face. Much better cos i can respond appropriately. (Sign language usually)
Is it XP? If so a quick dirty hack for this is writing a batch file to logout and setting the screen saver to that batch file.
Your local IT dept should be able to do this in about 5 seconds...

Haha yeah I figured as much - however thumping the reset switch is a bit harsh on that poor PC!

The middle management are probably stressed out, as they will be shortly falling in line for the dole queue with tens of thousands of other public sector workers, so this is probably some kind of defense mechanism.
Console yourself in the knowledge that at least with it being local government you won't have held up any important work.
To be honest having slept on it and seen some of your replies you do have some good collective points.

Fundamentally it’s like raising the fact that your colleague didn’t use all the pages on his note pad before getting a new one at Prime ministers question time.

Yes, I do agree that this does illustrate the petty mindedness of some local Govt attitudes.
Yes I do also agree with the (remarkably insightful) point that senior management had all just had a warning shot fired across their bows re senior level redundancies and this may have had a factor.
Lastly in my personal defence, my job is to work with businesses listening to their problems that affect them and then to organise the police and the council to make them work together to solve the problems. Businesses subscribe to a scheme to access my services and therefore I am self funding - effectively a businesses hosted by the council, therefore Mr Cameron AND Mr Brown like what I do as I don’t cost them or the tax payer any money and I make things better for voters and investors. Which is why I skipped the team meeting in the first place- I was actually out working.

God I'd really hate to have your job. But if I did I'd still log out of a shared pc. It's not difficult to do, how many times do you have to be told?
Second the don't give your password out. You are then responsible for anything that anybody does at that PC which could be an actual proper disciplinary offence not this annoying petty pish.
(IME if organisations want to empty people they do it for things like internet abuse as that is provable, and there are a million policies against it, that you probably signed when you started so no defence)

no-one had mentioned I had done it before- that is kind of the source of my ire.
Can you not set the PC up so that after a period of inactivity say 15 mins, you are automatically logged out?
The problem with just hitting reset is that if you have work that isn't saved, how does the other person know or not? and given you can't log off properly, what are the chances that you know how to save your work? You'd be pissed if the person reset the computer and you came back to find you'd lost your work.
