I got on a train after a flight once, London to Manchester I think. very crowded, standing up, a/c not working, hot day etc etc. I noticed a £10 upgrade to 1st (it was the weekend) sticker on the window, so I slipped through and paid my tenner.

Cool comfort, being served free stuff by a very servantly servant bloke.. lovely. I felt guilty about the free stuff almost.

Come the revolution, the likes of you will be first against the wall. Or maybe second, after all them that drink cappuccinos with little biscuits and that.

But it wasn't free, you paid a tenner for it.

I did that coming back from Wales once. Didn't fancy the ride back home so got on the train with my bike and grubby lycra, saw that 2nd class was absolutely rammed and 1st class was pretty much empty. Made myself comfy and prepared to give the guard some bollocks about them failing to honour their contract by not providing space in cattle class, but was pleasantly surprised that he said it would be only 3 quid extra.

But that was 20 years ago, so I pretty amazed they still do it. Kinda assumed they'd now charge a 3 gazzlinion fine for doing so.

I paid a tenner for the ticket, the paper and drink was free.

I travel Virgin 1st class Birmingham-Euston regular and if you go during the week you get smoked salmon and scrambled eggs breakfast..

Not at weekends though because there's a lack of staff.

EDIT: Gosh they even give you a socket and the use of the 1st class lounge at Euston.

I was annoyed to find they don't do waiter service north of Preston. Had to go and pick up my own drinks etc from the bar. Outrageous.

First class from Paddington to Penzance looks well nice, but from Huntingdon to Kings Cross it looks like common class!

Travelling first class back jhome on Saturday morning. Cattle class was £68, 1st was £29. Go figure.

Shame I'll be on the wrong end of a 23 hour day, so all I'll get out of it is a fractionally wider seat to snore my filthy stinking carcass off in...

The reason I'm highlighting this little ditty of a factoid* is I use themtheretrains a lot see. Most travel is from Sotty to Waterloo or Vicky and if in that London use them tubethingummybobs an awful lot. Just so happens I've needed to go from Sotty to Brighton and will do for some time to come, now I'd never pay the extra dosh for 1st on the London routes, don't really see the point, but this journey across this ere' country/counties it's just a few quids more like init.

Even foldie get's his own space**

* factoids are a trademark of that fella I don't really like on R2 in the afternoons, he's registered the title, I think he's a berk.
** foldie sit's between me and the huge (cough) space between the table and the (un)occupied seat across from me.

Go first class fairly regularly between Peterborough and York

Nice breakfast on the way up then afternoon tea on the way home, very civilised and last time the difference going up was £2.90 (usually about six quid extra each way)

I just sit up in the quiet coach as there is better seats up there, or if its mega busy, the carriage next to 1st, so when they make the call that passengers can sit in 1st, I'm right in the door lol.

I do wish people would stop sharing tips on cheap 1st class travel, my carriage is getting too busy. I had to share a table the other day!!!!

Did it all the time when I commuted from Glasgow to Warrington. Used to get a good breakfast and lots of tea and toast. Space plugs and peace and quiet to work! Advance wasn't much more than standard.

On the way home on a Friday there was food and a free bar, easily made up for the difference.

Had to go cattle class recently and was remembering why 1st was worth the extra
