Is it just me, or does anyone else toast malt loaf? It's the greatest post-winter ride snack, with a good cuppa. Everyone I've fed it to (or even mentioned it to) says "that's brilliant, I've never had toasted malt loaf".

Surely someone else does it?

A couple of tips if you are trying it for the first time:

- It goes from "not quite toasted" to "on fire" in about 15 seconds. I use a kitchen timer, 1m 45s with my toaster.
- It gets really hot. Must be all the sugar.
- You'll probably have to fish it out with something pointy. Turn the toaster off first.
- Works best with lashings of butter.

any sort of malt loaf (except the inevitable mouse-flavoured option) is sublime. toasted is amazing, though hard to create as the malt load tends to get eaten before it gets to the toaster 🙂

I toast mine too and apply the butter very liberally. I started toasting as we always have an emergency loaf in the freezer that I wasn't paitient enough to let defrost.

I also like malt loaf and custard a la microwave......mmmmm

The butter on malt loaf has to be sliced, not spread.

I know what you mean.

I think.

You were talking about the joys of warm chocolate spread?

Weren't you?

not yet convinced... I will try it... but I am sceptical. not sure toasting it will add anything to a great product.

Undecided, Devon.

Fruit Malt surprise

1. Cut loaf into 1cm thick slices.
2. Butter 1 side.
3. Then use a variety of spreads + jams on the other side - peanut butter, strawberry jam, blackcurrant, etc.
4. Arrange on a plate butter side up - then serve.
5. Watch the surprise as your family + friends expect just a plain piece of buttered malt loaf.

Swedish Malt Loaf Roulette

1. Recipe to number 2 above.
2. Arrange on plate.
3. Then secretly place a piece of pickled herring under one slice.
4. Then pretend you are in The Deerhunter - but obviously use the malt loaf instead of guns and the herring as a bullet.

yeh, malt loaf's nice and all that, but for flammability, opportunity for 3rd degree burns AND tooth decay..

Pop Tarts FTW !!!

It's a taste sensation. Just when you thought malt loaf could not get any better...

Two slices of malt loaf, add two slices of butter and a fresh coffee.

Make sure you get the large one and cut it length ways before toasting, to make big molten hot rectangles. Piddly little squares don't compete.

Nice with Dairylea on.

Strangely, as well as toasted Malt Loaf, I prefer Pop Tarts cold (great energy snack)

I saw this thread.

I entered the thread, expecting to post something along the lines of

'nnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo that's just not right'.

I will shortly be leaving this thread to go buy malt loaf and, ahem, experiment.... 8)

I'll just running down to Morrisons, however poking the toaster with a knife to retrieve the malt loaf seems like asking for trouble is all.

Now, there's not much better than toasted Malt Loaf. Except...

Fresh, home made Bara Brith. First time I've made in a silicon loaf tin, so it's big fat at the top - smells supreme though 8)

I'm 47 years old and thought Soreen couldn't be improved. You really do live and learn. That Bara Brith looks good too.

I have gone off malt loaf.
I discovered it makes a fantastic meal suppliment. So fantastic in fact, I ate two of the things straight from the pack for 3 days running. Kept me going a treat and filled me up nicely................................. 2 weeks and a prescription later I finaly "ejected" the part my body didn't use. Worryingly, had I kept the bag, I could probably have taken it back for a full refund, It looked exactly the same (round, not square obviously!!)
Let that be a lesson to you all, it cloggs you up.

Sorry if anyone was eating while reading that, which is more than I could do with burst blood vessels in me eyes!!:-0

Immense!!

In all my years of eating this stuff, I can't believe this simple enhancement never occurred to me. Now all I need is a solar or battery-powered toaster that'll fit in a daKine helipack and we're laughing.

Thank you OP!

Tried toasting - have to say I'm not convinced! Have another loaf in the cupboard so might try experimenting again this afternoon.
