our puppy, who is now 4 months, is showing the signs that he likes to do the bad thing to my leg/arm/ pillow and the question of neutering came up as I know that it can stop his baser urges from becoming a habit.

So do we get him the snip in the hope he stops or should we proceed with positive reinforcement and keep his manhood intact?

chop em off - unless you are gonna show him and breed him

but not yet he's too young. minimum 9 months old or so

We got our boy dog Frank done. We've never seen him get his 'lipstick' out since, no interest in that kind of thing anymore.

I don't know a lot about these things but have friends that do. apparently he is trying to tell you that he is the top dog in the house and you perhaps need to put this right. Think teenager lounging about the house like he owns it. Cut the off or not this problem still needs to be dealt with. He is young and trying his luck.

Foundry is on the right lines, humping isn't necessarily about the sex, it's also about imposing dominance in the pack!

Put him in his place, a dog should always always be at the bottom of the pile, give him an inch and he'll take a mile when he's older!

Yup, ours did this early on - got put in his place by us very quickly and he's now two and not had to have them off yet. Nip it in the bud, put him in his place and it shouldn't be a problem. 4 months is definitely too young to get them removed anyway.

yeah we were told by the vet they only consider it after 6 months at the earliest.
as far as dominance assertion goes, I suspect he is challenging us as he is generally very submissive (certainly for me, less so for the missus) and I had only noticed him doing it to visitors.

I'll continue as we are doing until he's old enough for the snip and discuss it with the other half as she had ideas of studding him.

My dog kept doing it even with his balls as he was in love with my left leg ... 😆

once he's got humping in his mindset he'll do it even if he has the chop, you need to stop him from doing it before he starts then he'll forget about it. also we had one of our dogs castrated, partly because he was aggressive towards other dogs and partly because our older dog had testicular cancer and we didn't want the same problem again. didn't solve the aggression and caused him to have a weight problem for the rest of his life. got two dogs now, both fully intact and staying that way.
