OK so we can time travel but does the time travel mean that we end up in the same spot as we left? If so is that the same point in space/time or what? So what happens if we go back a really long time and it turns out that this position was once inside a hill, are we instantly crushed to death?

A really long time ago, this planet wasn't here, it was somewhere else. So back in time to the same spot = death by freezing vacuum. Johnny Alpha's Time Bomb weapon exploited this by hurling anyone in the vinity 5 minutes into the past, by which time the plaet had moved on and they popped. (Strontium Dog, 2000AD for the uneducated or non terminally geeky)
EDIT sorry, the weapon WILL exploit that, it hasn't been invented yet, at least not in this temporal dimension.
