I know we've got threads on AV but was just wondering if anyone has experience of KIS and MSE.

My KIS 2010 expires next week and I'm not happy about paying £65 for 2 machines (when I initially paid only £25 last year). Has performed perfectly though, hence curious about how "good" MSE really is.

MSE is fine, and far less bother than KIS. It doesn't ask you stupid questions all the time, protects you, and is free. Why pay more?

TBH never really felt KIS to be intrusive or a hogger. It just kept bad stuff away from my machine and gave quiet little alerts when it suspected dodgy activity. Would like to think MSE is equally good at picking stuff up.

They are all about as good as each other picking stuff up, but none is perfect.

KIS for me was a pain when installing stuff. "nnsidnc.exe wants to change iitowunh32.dll - do you want to allow it?" Er.. I dunno, do I?

I find MSE excellent. Lightweight and easy. I did get one of those "we have found a virus on your computer and are shutting it down for your protection please pay $50 for a cleanup" scams the other day that MSE couldn't shift but I have a free copy of Malwarebytes that will get rid of them.

MSE is good, but don't think it's all you need.

S&D, MB AntiMalware, and others still exist for a reason.

I use MB already but don't like SD for some reason. Uninstalled it ages ago. Will investigate MSE further.

Because people think they'll be better protected if they spend money and/or don't trust MS?

S&D used to be a processor/memory hog last time I used it a couple of years or so ago.

Btw you are not under constant onslaught from viruses. I went without for a year, did a scan - nothing. So to say you've had no issues when using KIS doesn't really say much.

However you ARE under constant onslaught from other kinds of attacks, which is why you NEED a firewall.

people get mixed up between viruses and malware. Although viruses are malware, they are only a percentage of the malware family.

"Anti Virus" protection does what it says on the tin, but it won't remove nasty malware (like fake anti virus, toolbars, plugins etc).

S&D on the other hand won't remove viruses - it was never designed for that. It will remove fake anti viruses, toolbars, and associated junk.
