After last years 6 months of GP bothering with my left knee and Fractured leg and also my shoulder my right knee has now started being a pest.

About one month ago i was cycling up hill and my right knee suddenly made a pop noise and then started to be excruciatingly painful. Went straight home and took some pain killers and iced it. There was no swelling just pain. Decided to stay off the bike for a few weeks and the pain eased to just a dull ache when resting and a sharper ache when going up and down stairs.

Tried a short ride and the pain came back about 25 mins into the ride, decided to just ignore it, and it got increasingly worse as the ride went on. That was last week. Yesterdays ride same again. I thought it might be my seat height, but when i got the bike last year i suffered only pain in my left knee which was due to a torn meniscus and not long sice recovered from a fractured leg.

Also when i was post op from meniscus surgery in December i started cycling again in feb and the only pain i had was from my left knee. But as that healed there was no pain till i felt the pop in my right knee a month ago.

The pain is on the Anterior medial area in the knee just to the left of my right patella. It feels like i've been kicked in it.

Also have pain when sitting down. Would it be wise to just carry on cycling or go straight to the GP?

In the time it took you to write that post, you could have made an appointment at the GP and a nice cup of tea!

But in the spirit of the game, my advice is just to completely ignore the pain you are having and avoid any proper medical advice for as long as possible 🙂

I've just waved a picture of a knee specialist at my computer screen.

This is the homeopathic equivalent of going to your GP and getting a referral and treatment so you should be cured now.

If it's still bad, I'd get an appointment to see your doctor.

Drac has a good point - anything that goes 'pop' isn't likely to heal itself.

My wife did a tendon in her foot at a fitness class. People 20ft away heard it go 'pop'. She sought medical assistance at the time.

Stop being silly, go to your GP [s]asap[/s] in a close but appropriate timeframe

FTFY.

I agree it warrants a review, but not really 'ASAP' territory TBH.

Unless it's a weasel, and 226gm of treacle is involved..?

My knee seems fine, so based on that, I would say no.

well you added the treacle in afterwards.

If I'd known about the treacle I'd have just let the money go.

So he should turn down the first available appointment at his GP ?

I'm always given a choice between an 'emergency' (normally same day) or a 'normal' appointment with my gp.

I exercise judgement as to which is most appropriate so as to leave emergency appointments available for those who need more urgent care.

A month old injury is not urgent/an emergency.

In my surgery before an appointment is made the GP phones you back and asks what the problem is. According to my GP this has cut down the amount of people he sees by about 30%.

not an emergancy , gp is only going to refer you, no pills for knees going 'pop'.

simple advice stop cycling sell you bikes do something less strenuos instead.

btw if your getting back into cycling after serious injury build up 5 or ten minute rides.. 25 minutes is way too long for a first ride.

That photo (chuckle)is not at all close!!
I don't wear a tie or white coat, and my (some say ginger) goatee has gone!

So he should turn down the first available appointment at his GP ?

Yes. That's exactly what I meant 🙄

Or... (in fact, I'm not getting into this - OP - use your judgement on how to speak to receptionists/people in teh real world...)

Thing is I was taking it very easy at the time it went pop easiest gear and spinning. Was told by physio to spin when starting a ride. The first two miles of my ride are flat roads. Never had problems with my right knee ever. Left knee was always a bit weak from age of 16 onwards.

Used to cycle when I was younger with no problems and before last years fracture was cycling pain free, the pain after my leg break had healed didn't bother me much as it only started to ache after 10 miles same when they discovered I'd torn my meniscus.

Got gp appointment for tomorrow. There is no swelling what so ever, mild pain on palpatation, moderate pain when walking.

Glad you're in the process of getting it sorted.

If it's any consolation - I've been pushing it on the bike recently and given myself a nasty, crunch achilles tendinitis....
Sore..

Apologies. I took ElShalimo's comment "go to your GP asap" as meaning go to your GP asap, and thought you were suggesting otherwise when you challenged it. Obviously not.

You reckon DrP is running late today with a huge queue of patients out in the waiting room ?

Dr P - I also have had a tender lump on my achillies region on the back of my foot also since my knee went pop. So get pain from both areas.

Drac- I work on Orthopaedics, but I nurse people after having surgery on their Orthopaedic traumas and elective spinal surgery. I didn't go to Med school or study Trauma Orthopaedics. I have a vague idea of what I think it is.

My spelling and grammar shows why I didn't get into Med school!

If only there was someone off the ward you could have asked.

it does seem odd, have they not even asked why you've been limping for a month?

Not a major limp. It's more noticeable on stairs. And they haven't really said anything. After spending 6 months off from Feb till August, then December 21st till end of Feb after the meniscus repair I kinda just say I'm fine. Got told to sit down for a bit by a doctor and ward sister last week.

But I'm not bothering them with my injury as their too busy.

I prescribe a large dose of MTFU.

I am not a Doctor however. If I were I would probably suggest you go to see one. Fairly soon, but not so soon as to offend anyone. But don't take too long.

Good chance i wonder that your right knee has playe dup because of your weaker left leg? i.e. you subconciously protect your previously damaged left leg by pedalling harder with your right. If you've been off the bike a bit, i could see how this might cause an issue?

(Caution: I'm not a doctor 😉
