The biggest crime I see is using nobhead.  Tsk tsk.  **** is the correct spelling as in cranium like the male genitalia. Nob refers to the aristocracy

It was obvious to me Binners was in jest pointing out the absurdity of the statements some had made

Cougar - why not ask Mark what to do about this thread? That way, if it ever came to trial you could claim that you were just following orders.

All afternoon? Hardly, how shit is the back end that it would take that long to delete the offending post? Sure as hell didn't take any of you that long to ban me, think it was something in the region of fifteen seconds.

Equal treatment. Not a hard ask. Is that clear enough?

I seem to remember Hitler and his cronies did have a bit of a reputation for turning up on other people’s property uninvited and trashing the place....

Just sayin...

I believe the correct spelling is "enob" (bone backwards).  "Knob" is a corruption of that.

Can we use the term cheeky tinkers rather than pikey? It sounds more loveable. Just been Googling other terms and it would appear the equivalent to Chav or Ned for the Irish is Knacker. So let’s call them Knackers!

Right.

I'm not reading all that.

I've tried a bit of page 4, so I get that someone's done something and the vultures are circling.

Could someone just give me the condensed version?

Ta.

Travellers / Knackers did bad. Binners is Hitler. Some people got upset. Perchy made funny. Cougar is getting unnecessary stick as usual

Right RS ..... A load of ...erm... charming Romany folk....  trashed a brewery because... well... because they were probably misunderstood, or something, and looking for their place in society, and it was, like, a howl of frustration.

I'm Hitler or Mussolini, or Goebbels, or all 3. Something or other. But definitely a nobhead. We're all agreed on that

Cougar is little better. Think of him as a French collaborator. We should shave his head.

And somewhere there's a laundrette doing 24/7 to cope with all the bedsheets that need washing. It's been emotional for the more sensitive amongst us

And all the people rushing to the defence of the .erm... charming Romany folk as simply misunderstood.... will all no doubt be getting in touch with them shortly offering them the chance to set up camp on their front lawns, so confident are they that its only a tiny minority of them who don't spend most of their time dedicated to charitable acts and helping kittens

I think that just about covers it

Anyway.... I've not got time for this. I'm off to invade Poland

Binners, is this about that lucky, hair restoring heather you bought from the fair last year?

And all these experts on racism queueing up to help and you've not taken them up?

Hmmm?

Just bloody ungrateful, some people.

Perchy, of course he's a nobhead. 🙂

I'm surprised anyone needed more evidence than he's already provided over the years. Bloody weirdos.

Cougar is little better. Think of him as a French collaborator. We should shave his head.

The Scarlet Pimple more like - you think you've pinned him down then there he is, gone. I'm genuinely not sure he actually exists..🙂

So not Drac's fault then? Not even a little bit?

in 100 years this group has gone from being valued members of the rural economy to ostracised outcasts.  Why?

Quite probably, and this should be obvious to anyone with the ability to think, there were far, far fewer travelling people, maybe no more than two, possibly three families in each group, in horse-drawn caravans, who would stay for no more than a few days, maybe a week then move on, leaving little trace of their passing. They would almost certainly have been Roma, not Irish tinkers, although there ‘may’ have been some of those, most Irish over here would have been the Navigators building the canals and railways.

FFWD to today, and the travellers have access to money, huge caravans, big cars and vans to tow them, and the means to easily travel in large groups all over the country, pitching up anywhere that takes their fancy, because, they’re travellers, and they have an absolute right to do so, because to deny it is to deny them their rights.

The other issue is sites for them to pitch on; once upon a time travellers travelled, that’s what they did, with possibly somewhere to winter over, but otherwise staying in one place would be almost anathema, it’s what the Geyri, non-Gypsies, do. But now it seems that a permanent sites are almost a requirement, which is fine, nobody should have an issue with this. Except that whenever proper hardstanding sites with full facilities are provided, these new style travellers seem to consider such facilities as something to plunder and sell, and trash whatever can’t be sold, then expect it to be replaced without question. Swindon borough council built one such site which had a cycle route running alongside, and I rode past and checked it over after it had been trashed by one traveling group. It had, quite literally, been destroyed, all fittings in the toilets and showers had been ripped out and stolen, doors ripped out, walls smashed, and burned-out cars and other trash littered the whole area. What’s the saying about not shitting in your own nest?

It’s this behaviour which causes so much bitterness, coupled with a modern malais, a sense of entitlement that carries its own postcode, something that didn’t happen 100 years ago. It’s certainly true that there was, among settled folk, suspicions about Roma, and their welcome was always guarded and wary, probably with some good reason! But they’re a people with a genuine different ethnicity and a very long and proud history, which deserves to be respected.

Unlike the tinkers.

Caveat: none of the above is as a result of detailed research, it’s what I’ve gleaned from stuff I’ve read for years, seems to make some sort of sense, though.

and Count Zero the bigger question or way forward is how do you break that cycle? How do you give the kids growing up there a chance to change.

Countzero - the ones on my family farm were certainly tinkers - Irish travellers.  Well known for their work as metalsmiths and so on.

TJ - talk to Irish natives about tinkers and you will find their views, based on personal experience, are diametrically opposed to yours.

I go with their view.

Kidnap them and give them to middle class families to raise? Volunteers from the forum please step forward.

frank - the difference between 100 years ago and now.  I suggest a little research would help you understand.  there is no doubt at all that tinkers were mainly irish travellers and highly skilled metal workers and tinsmiths and welcomed in rural communities like my families farm because of the skills they brought.  This is a historical fact.
Tinkers were the travelling tinsmiths mainly Irish travellers.  Not all tinkers were irish travellers, not all irish travellers were tinkers.

A few years ago I worked for a manufacturing company in Bradford. One day a small number of travellers appeared on our staff car park. Police were phoned, typical response - nohthing. So one of the production managers round up a dozen of the biggest hardest looking guys from the factory floor and went over to the car park to “have a word”

they were gone by closing time

Hmmm, rose tinted glasses? Hansard debates 1923:

Sir T. BENNETT

asked the Home Secretary if his attention has been called to frequent complaints of the delinquencies of gangs of gypsies, especially in the south-eastern counties, involving loss to farmers, damages to allotments, and theft of the produce grown thereon; whether he is aware that branches of the National Farmers' Union in other parts of England have passed resolutions complaining of the nuisance; and whether, seeing that the police are unable to protect the public against the depredations of these people, he will consider the advisability of introducing legislation for the accomplishment of that purpose?

TJ - the tinkers that travelled the roads of Northern Scotland regularly right up to.the 1970s were as Scottish as me. There's an excellent book called The Summer Walkers that you should read. It gives a good insight into both the reality and the myths surrounding the tradesmen and artisans who sought out work on the road.

I note that in SSTW it's ok to be offensive as long as you can claim it's just a joke. I look forward to even-handed modding of this sort from now on. Meanwhile, a new logo for the magazine..

Didn't you get banned for doing something similar? I'm sure the threads must be around somewhere...

Perhaps Binners could change his user name and pretend this never happened?

Ok with you?
