I feel strangely upset by the queen's passing whereas if half the posters on here croaked it I wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.
We should just do it by a telephone poll presented by Ant and Dec, Katie Price for HOS!
We don’t.
However, we do have one, fact. Might as well accept it, not going to change any time soon.
It wouldn't even change if we went independent, not automatically anyway.
If certain posters on here croaked, I'd dance a bloody jig.
Again, I’m not saying it has to be a monarch, just someone who’s not a politician.
A person chosen at random from the voting public, would be my choice. Given a house, much like a typical manse and the Uk median wage (or possibly an MP’s salary). Change every 5 or so years.

Sounds good, like the guy who was president of Uruguay for a while.

Classy.
Charles does seem to have a sense of morality and a firm set of beliefs which are not entirely based on self interest,
Yeah right. Nutjob Climate Change Charlie/WEF puppet. Our future looks rosy.
So i ask again why do we need a head of state at all?
We don’t.
However, we do have one, fact. Might as well accept it, not going to change any time soon.
It's much the same as, we don't need a nation north of Hadrian's Wall whose sole purpose in life seems to be to complain about the English. But we have one so we might as well get used to it.
😁
Nutjob Climate Change Charlie/WEF puppet.
Have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Stop reading those bits of the internet for a while. You'll feel better for it.
You need someone to speak to and for the nation at times like that, not just half of it whilst infuriating the other half.
Agreed. Head of state who is not also the head of government has many benefits. Not inclined to concentrate too long on any of that today though, myself. Another time...
How soon after do they have the coronation?
It’ll be ages after. It was about a year IIRC between the Queens ascension and coronation.
Agreed they don't wanna hath the funeral meats cold serving the coronation table
Just as well STW isn't shut down for mourning, certain posters would probably implode due to not being able to get their views out to the internet at large.
This actually made me laugh.

and could be applied to quite a few people on here getting themselves all frothed up over something they have no control over.
I dont think canada does either
I think you will find their Head of State died yesterday, you really do have the confidence of idiocy.
The us does not have a head of state separate from the political leader. I dont think canada does either
Erm, you do realise who is head of state for Canada?
I think you will find their Head of State died yesterday, you really do have the confidence of idiocy.
🤣
🤣
Made me laugh out loud as well, I must admit. Harsh, but a great use of words.
Overall, too much negativity in this thread for me though. The comments about other forum members dying are very disappointing. No need to sink so low.

My guess is late spring/early summer next year.
There will be an additional bank holiday for it - and i think everyone will agree the 4 day bank holiday for the Jubilee this year was ace - so my guess it'll be end of May/Early June.
Have a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Chamomile?
Some nice speeches by Bronson and Beer Starmer in the commons.
Blimey an actual decent speech from Johnson

I was gobsmacked when I read that, but even more so when I scrolled back to see who’d written it!
Hmmm, the sycophantic bastards have cancelled the fitba, that could tip me over the edge into this thread for real. 😆 Absolutely no call for that this weekend, next weekend I could understand, but this just no need at all.
You need someone to speak to and for the nation at times like that, not just half of it whilst infuriating the other half. Politicians can’t really do that function well.
Again, I’m not saying it has to be a monarch, just someone who’s not a politician.
I agree we need some one but not a Monarch who costs hundreds of millions a year and has been allowed to amass so much wealth via the Dutches from the people of this country. I would also like them not to retain the huge legal powers the monarch still retains. I dont care if they use them or not, although the do, its the principle of a so called democracy that allows 1 family so much power I object to
Theresa May is making me laugh out loud! 😮 Lovely stories about the Queen.
Guys guys, I know it is a difficult time but all this bickering won't bring her back.
but even more so when I scrolled back to see who’d written it!
Likewise. I'll never be able to take him seriously again 😉
Thought Theresa May gave a great speech, showing great timing and a wit that we never saw when she was PM.
It’s much the same as, we don’t need a nation north of Hadrian’s Wall whose sole purpose in life seems to be to complain about the English. But we have one so we might as well get used to it.
Wrong wall.

Absolutely no call for it at all! Do they seriously think that people who would have attended sports etc. will now sit at home in quiet contemplation. Ridiculous. Thankfully my sport is still going ahead.
Charles does seem to have a sense of morality and a firm set of beliefs which are not entirely based on self interest,
Knowing a few people who work for / about him locally to here the reports I get are that he's very sincere - things like the Princes's trust and his various other projects - his heart is really in it, its not for show. But they also say that he's very self aware - he knows that his circumstance mean he's totally out of touch - he know what he wants to do but he knows that he wouldn't begin to know how it should be done. So he gets the best people, gives them the right resources and doesn't interfere.
He's had a project running here for 10 years or so and you can see the place changing and I'm seeing people change too- he makes opportunity in places and communities where no one else would bother and sustains the effort and I'm really seeing people blossom.
Do they seriously think that people who would have attended sports etc. will now sit at home in quiet contemplation.
C'mon. No self-respecting Rangers fan would attend a match this weekend.

Very interested in climate change but only if the required actions don't stand in the way of his pleasure at shooting animals.
Do pheasants release CFCs when shot or something?

This is wonderful news.
Always good to hear how one of the wealthiest men in the world is supporting a village project.

Plenty of resource used to rear them. Also, grouse moors are horrendous things.
Listening to R4 world at one right now. Two main things about queenie:
- she's still dead, I think
- she was involved in some of the absolute stone cold dullest anecdotes ever broadcast. I've just been listening to something about doing jigsaws FFS 😱
It's going to be a long couple of weeks
Trying to find some actual news to listen to but im listening to a forelock tugging idiot discuss "that time the queen helped him complete his very hard jigsaw", Ive always been pretty indifferent to the monarchy but 10+ days of this mawkish drivel is taking the utter piss

A cracking tweet from last night

More likely trying to avoid the scenes from last night when a Hearts fan shouted "**** the Queen" 10 seconds into the minutes silence and a mass brawl erupted as a result
With flags at half-mast across the nation now, how high will Rishi Sunak's trousers be?

He'll be rocking shorts.

Plenty of other wealthy men about and they're doing **** all. Not making that observation above as a monarchist or someone remotely interested in the Royals, or someone interested in Charlie. Its just an insight into how he operates and the results it yields. The nature of my work means I spend a lot of time in various chunks of landscape owned by various wealthy people - recently worked on the Tertrapak estate then up the the WHSmith bloke's mountains then round the coast to chunk of Scotland bought with west end musical sales. Non of those folk really doing anything as considered or beneficial or sustained or as interesting.
but 10+ days of this mawkish drivel is taking the utter piss
Cheer up man! If nothing else this whole thing is a fantastic demonstration of everything that is rotten and corrupt in this godforsaken country. All the simpering upper class twits are crawling out the woodwork to remind us plebs what our place is. F*** them all!
'And I'll always remember that time she visited the care home when I was doing a jigsaw. She said 'ooh that's a hard one' coz it was the one with millions of baked beans. What a fantastic sense of humour she had'
I thought there was a lot of conservation work going at Corrour? Rewinding areas, reducing deer numbers, an active Peatland restoration project, hydro to reduce dependence on CO2 generating electricity.
Personally I'll always remember that time she spent 12m quid to pay off the woman her son raped so that he didn't have to go to court. Such touching concern and support for her family. She really was a fantastic mother.

As long it it triggers a response then my work is done, just woke up, turned on the radio and listened to "queenie does jigsaw" shocker.

My god there are some full-tilt miseries on this forum. If you can't just ignore it and find something else to do, can't you see the comedy in the mawkish drivel?
It reminds me of that Brass Eye episode where they burn the peado inside a giant wicker phallus. Ted Maul reports reports -
"Tonight, one man kebabbed. Thousands scarred forever by a shared blood ritual. And yet, an astonishing sense of community here now, a positive atmosphere, a sense of a job well done, a shared sense of relief."
With flags at half-mast across the nation now, how high will Rishi Sunak’s trousers be?
Aren’t they back to full mast until tomorrow?
Well, I have to say I just stumbled across this from her Annus Horribilis speech in 1992 (or was it 98? Anyway.)
Distance is well-known to lend enchantment, even to the less attractive views. After all, it has the inestimable advantage of hindsight.
But it can also lend an extra dimension to judgement, giving it a leavening of moderation and compassion - even of wisdom - that is sometimes lacking in the reactions of those whose task it is in life to offer instant opinions on all things great and small.
No section of the community has all the virtues, neither does any have all the vices. I am quite sure that most people try to do their jobs as best they can, even if the result is not always entirely successful. He who has never failed to reach perfection has a right to be the harshest critic.
There can be no doubt, of course, that criticism is good for people and institutions that are part of public life. No institution - City, Monarchy, whatever - should expect to be free from the scrutiny of those who give it their loyalty and support, not to mention those who don't.
But we are all part of the same fabric of our national society and that scrutiny, by one part of another, can be just as effective if it is made with a touch of gentleness, good humour and understanding.
Hard to argue with that.
from her Annus Horribilis speech
Do you think she actually wrote that herself?
Do pheasants release CFCs when shot or something?
Managing moorland to raise and shoot them involves the wholesale destruction of natural environments. Ok so that's needed to feed people, but not really great just to entertain some toffs for a few weeks.
Do you think she actually wrote that herself?
I think she would have had a huge amount of input into it, yes.
And, regardless of who wrote it, it's hard to argue with.
I thought there was a lot of conservation work going at Corrour? Rewinding areas, reducing deer numbers, an active Peatland restoration project, hydro to reduce dependence on CO2 generating electricity.
Estate management filling out grant applications? Probably plenty of that. You can usually smell the RHI payments as you approach.
The work being done here seems more of an investment in people than land assets
And, regardless of who wrote it, it’s hard to argue with.
I'm sure quite a few terminal bores on here will give it a good go.

Pheasants don't need moorland. Easily integrated into woodland, farmland, and rewilding.

.

Eh..? Pheasants are woodland birds, not moorland. Copses, woods, and hedgerows that might otherwise be grubbed out for intensive farming are left for them and cover crops which benefit other birds are planted for them. Pheasant shooting is not above criticism for various reasons but 'wholesale destruction of natural environments'? 🤔 Are you thinking of grouse?
In the spirit of being positive, and not at all mawkish, the BBC just ran a story where The Queen said "Good morning" to a boy.
Can we have a few more positive, not to mention enlightening, stories like this please.
It was Cougar that mentioned pheasants. I was referring to the vast swathes of upland desert maintained for grouse and deer slaughter
Pheasants don’t need moorland. Easily integrated into woodland, farmland, and rewilding.
It's not the pheasants that need to understand that, it's the estate owners/managers - or environmental vandals as they should be called

Aside from the comment was about shooting animals which isnt just the pheasants but their love of grouse shooting and the green desert which comes from that.
As for easily integrated depends what scale you want them at really. It still has a significant impact on local ecology including risks to invertebrates and of course to anything seen as remotely threatening to pheasants which can then have impact elsewhere eg kill the pine martins and grey squirrels benefit at the cost of reds.

It's a small gesture but says so much about her personality and inspirational character.
Half day at the office as we are all too sad to work. I didn't mention I was a Republican in case they made me stay.
Never watched a Queen's Speech at Christmas, but her COVID special announcement was impressive and hit the spot in a way that Boris was unable to do so.
“I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge. And those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any. That the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humoured resolve and of fellow-feeling still characterise this country. The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.
Hypothetically… what would happen if, in her will, Queenie requested a full Viking funeral with her body placed on a pyre on a flaming longboat on the Thames, set ablaze by burning arrows fired from the terrace of the Houses of Parliament by archers dressed as Norse raiders.
Would they have to do that or would she be constitutionally bound to be given the full state funeral?
Is it just me or is watching Charles greet the crowds at Buck house to cries of 'god save the king' like a scene from Game of Thrones? Half expecting someone to get their head chopped off or one of the wenches to get their t*ts out. Gotta love 21st century britain 😄
‘god save the king’
Makes me cringe every time I hear it... feels so much more like an anachronism than what we've been used to.
@dazh - do you think Liz Truss planned this?
She sucked the lifeforce out of Old Lizzie knowing that Parliament would be effectively closed for 10 days thus she didn't have to get approval for the half-baked energy measures. Plus there's the added bonus of she'd get those militant unions to back down and cancel today's and next week's strikes. The gig-economy workers at the cancelled sports events would not be getting paid either (serves them right for not climbing out of the ghetto and going to Oxbridge)
You see Thatcher has been re-born and walks amongst us ! Be afraid !!!
god save the king’
Makes me cringe every time I hear it…
Young squaddies shouted that as they went over the top to give themselves courage. Maybe
Is it just me or is watching Charles greet the crowds at Buck house to cries of ‘god save the king’ like a scene from Game of Thrones?
Prince Andrew walking naked through the streets of London to cries of 'Shame!'
I thought the King looked like he had just won a sporting competition, shake a few hands of his supporters, then head off to collect his prize.
do you think Liz Truss planned this?
I'm not sure Lis Truss is capable of such machinations. I wonder however if she and Boris are reflecting on the fact that the effort required to play her part in their pathetic political soap opera finished dear Queenie off. I hope the labour comms dept are photoshopping the 'Tories killed the Queen' memes for a future social media blitz when the hysteria has died down.
With flags at half-mast across the nation now, how high will Rishi Sunak’s trousers be?
Rishi will be rocking new diamond-encrusted sliders - with Queenie down there is no competition for his missus as “richest woman in Britain”.
So i ask again why do we need a head of state at all?
Can you name a counrty without one? To save you googling its only Switzerland & that's down to their Federal system. You need to have someone who represents the sovereign authority of the nation, which isn't the same as the government.
Why does anybody care about the Royal parasites? There a rotten bunch to the core.A leper colony in fact(who said that?).Probably unfair to leper colonies mind.
Apologies about canada. I thought they had got rid of the queen as head of state. Must be confuzzled with someone else . Australia?
That did make me look foolish
'She was a thoughtful Queen too, like that time she asked me if I wanted sugar in my tea, which was funny because I do take sugar in my tea. Ahhh she will be missed'
