Yes, but that is because of the US Constitution, which defines who is the head of State & includes the concept of popular sovereignty. Essentially the American people declared themselves soverign. ie Ultimate political authority rests with the people themselves.. but they had to have a revolution to achieve it. You might also notice that they justify it with the phrases
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it"
So essentially democratic government is correct becasue we say so.

According to the BBC, the queens funeral is the number one sporting story today. I certainly welcome turning the funeral procession into a race, it will make the highlights a bit more exciting. I wonder if the post match interviews with royals is going to be as generic as usual sporting interviews.

Been for a walk around the village. Back entrance to the castle where the great and the good are heading for the private funeral. Needless to say, more police than a football match. Might walk up to see the coffin as it passes. As for medals, mines in its box still. I’ve never worn it in public.

Absolutely silent in our village today once the dog walkers and horsists had done their early morning routines.

No cars, no one out walking, no kids out. It's like the height of lockdown, quieter than Christmas Day.

The outside sound isn’t that good. My brother works for the BBC and the sound quality he recorded is much better than what they broadcast

Is the plan to eat her later ? Plenty of Rosemary on the coffin

Except Harry was a serving officer and as such should be able to wear his AAC uniform but he has to request permission from Buck palace.

There really are some daft uniforms. I have just realised how utterly absurd bearskin hats are. If you saw someone walking down the road wearing one you would think wtf. You wouldn't necessarily think that if you saw someone wearing a beret, or even perhaps a peak cap. They are just so ridiculously tall. The helmets with long ponytails look incredibly stupid too.

And as for beefeaters, I have never understood why grown men are expected to dress like something out of Alice in Wonderland.

I don't understand the appeal behind all the "pageantry".

Seen. I think they asked and were given permission for that occasion. Wise choice of Harry to choose Blues & Royals rather then AAC, the beret doesn't look as good as a cap in No.1 dress.

FWIW William also served as a pilot for the Navy and RAF after transferring from an armoured division command, but was prevented from combat service after Harry's duty was leaked and specific threats made.

Charles was in all three services too, flying helicopters and commanding a minesweeper.

They may not have seen combat service, but do all service personnel who have not seen combat also demean others?

Edward's service in the RM was memorably short and his military appointments are honorary.

Ironically its only Harry and Andrew who were deployed to combat areas.

Royals aside, I quite like the pageantry of big state events. We do it very well, and we've got **** all else to offer the world at the moment, sadly.

It's a bit like going to Disneyland, you need to suspend the disbelief and go with flow otherwise reality kicks in and you realise it's all a bit pointless. Sometimes we all need a bit of make believe.

Slightly off topic but my claim to fame is that I nearly smacked Harry in the face with a toilet door whilst out in Afghan. All the helicopter squadrons were in a separate compound at camp bastion and whilst Harry was on the Apaches I was based two hangars down on the Merlin.

We all shared the same loo block and when coming out of the loos I swung the door open and nearly smacked him in the face. I think I actually shat myself !!

So do I. I've always enjoyed Trooping the Colour, particularly this year when I discovered a feed without commentary, but then I like military bands (my dad was ,in a minor way, a regimental musician and one of my oboes was bought from a member of the Household Cavalry).

Hard to top a solo piper though.

My dad was part of Churchill’s parade. Queen’s colour squadron. Often had marching band music on in our house. Still love the music.

Today seems very backwards looking, rightly so, but that will be used by people to try and create an “us” with dissenting voices shut down. We need to be heightened to that.

He left the wire plenty of times.

i think we can safely say that from today’s display it is far from being over.

I don't think is representative about how people feel about the next generation of Royals.

Even I, a republican, can stand back and say in her role, she did a good job and behaved, majority of the time, with dignity. I didn't agree with her bringing Andrew back in to the fold, with his role at Philips funeral but I know a lot of mothers who with their unconditional love for their children, could never believe their children to do any wrong.

Charles and Camilla are completely different beasts.

I shoulder barged prince Edward in Soho one rainy winters evening, think it was either on Newman St or Rathbone place, narrow pavement, parked cars, him walking 2 abreast and me unwilling to step into the gutter between parked cars so i held my line..
didn’t look back, no tugging of forelock or geneflection.

This would have been when he dabbled in TV/theatre production with mummys money to set up Ardent productions.

I don't understand why the royal hearse doesn't have any license plates, nor why the police are wearing uniforms comprising of black shirts. Surely it hasn't all been purchased with one use in mind? Seems like a terrible waste if it has.

Edit: It must be just the Met, all the police in London seemed to be wearing black shirts but the police in Windsor are wearing white shirts.

I don't get bent out of shape about people criticising the military, just be accurate about it.

Very few people outside of the air group had a clue what went on in that compound for good reason.

You'd be surprised the amount of idiots who'd compromise security chatting to people back home.

It's also not the first time I've heard that utterly boring dit.

The tens of thousands lining the route and the roughly 750000 who trouped past the coffin may agree, but they are but a relatively small percentage of the population and a self selected one at that. Nowhere in view on the telly are those who are indifferent or positively against the monarchy( which is probably appropriate today for reasons of taste) so it would be wrong to extrapolate for the whole country.

constitutional monarchy,

we don’t have a constitution. The rf allow Parliament to exist hence they get to preview all legislation that might affect them and sign off on all that dues get passed. A ceremonial monarch would be big step forward for the country

@Chrismac : The Helicopter compound was a separate compound within Bastion and quite secure so I never saw him with a security detail. He was quite amicable with me after the loo door event and even had a laugh about it.

I was also there when the infamous "Battle of Bastion" took place and by all accounts he was whisked away quite quickly on that occasion !!

@relapsed_madalorian : You are right about being able to smell it !! it was those loos or a thunder box outside the Chinny det .... No thanks 🙂
