I know a guy who's got a tyre print running up his leg. Looks good - go for it I say. Having said that, still not got one myself 😀

Not got any bike related tattoos, but, if its your first one make sure you go to a top artist, not just the closest to you or the cheapest, good tattoos arent cheap, and they are addictive!

How much do they cost, example of my current design above.

nah. one crank is longer than the other. Do you want cyclists pointing that out for the rest of your life? and the geometry is a bit dated no?

doesn't matter how good the tatto guy is. get the tattoo right first! That thing above is a mess.

There's that bloke that is compiling tattoos of old style chainrings all over himself. Much more stylish imo.

cost, around £80 to £100 for a good artist, £100+ for very well known artists. Where are you based?

A design like that, prolly around the £50-60 mark. I've got several, one's a line of Ogham that says 'can't ride for shit'
Be very clear on what you want, and get a good tattooist to design it to your idea, that way it'll be properly executed. I stress a good tattooist, someone who can actually draw. There's a lot of truly awful ink out there.

OK I hear what you are saying, the idea above was only an example but I my own idea will be about that size TBH.

I live in Milton Keynes if that helps.

Anything I care enough about to consider having a tattoo of, I care about enough not to need a tattoo of. If that makes sense.

CZ > probably not the best idea to post your pics directly after saying "there's a lot of truly awful ink out there"... (-:

I've been meaning to get a tattoo for a while. And by "a while" I mean "for about 25 years." I think perhaps it might be my midlife crisis manoeuvre when I turn 40 next year.

As per loddrik and TJ. Just say no, tats are grim.

Mine was done spur of the moment. Feel utterly ambivalent about it now - forget it's there 'til someone says, "I didn't know you had ink".

It's neither good nor bad - celtic cross type thing - when I do catch sight of it in the mirror now, it reminds me that I'm an exile waiting to go back home 🙂

EDIT; oh and that design at the top of the page is pretty nasty - if I were going to get a bike-related tat, it would be that oily mark you get on your calf, when half the chainring bounces of your leg and leaves a greasy imprint. In fact, the only reason I haven't had it done is that my calves are nothing to write home about. Why are our leg muscles named after bovine quadrapeds anyway?

I got a wee small tat on one of my shoulders when I was in my late teens, means different things to me nowadays but glad I have it as a reminder..like it on my shoulder cos it's generally not visible to everyone and is just for me. Have considered getting a few others done over the years but haven't. They say they're addictive but I guess they can't be or I'd have both arms sleeved by now!

+1 for finding a good place to get it done..

When Lodders and Flashers agree you know that they're wrong...
If you're not sure, then NO.
If you have to ask for the approval from your peers, then NO.
It's your body, your life and your decision.
If you need the approval of Lodders and Flashers, then for the love of god... 🙄
Don't forget the PM's wife has one, so they are approved by the upper/middle classes despite what Flashers thinks...
And Lodders doesn't need one to be a Scally. 😉

Theres going to be a tattoo convention in milton keynes on 18th n 19th of june, if i was you id check the website and look at the artists websites that are going to be there, then phone up and get a booking with an artist that you like. Not sure if Steve Prizeman is going to be there, he's a top artist (he won london convention best colour tattoo with a pirates of caribbean leg piece) but he also rides and is a top bloke too.

no tattooist is going to appreciate having to tattoo the spongey drying out old skin of someone having a mid-life crisis.. it will end up looking poor..

why don't you go to a couple of the more off the beaten track music festivals this year instead..

just take a big warm coat.. a bottle of LSD25.. a bag of E's and an ounce of skunk to see you through the weekend.. no tent.. no money.. that should satisfy your urge to take a walk on the wild side for a another few years..

job's a good 'un

Cougar, that did actually occur to me a little while after posting. ? as far as spending money on something you won't regret's concerned, there are plenty of things I've spent money on that I've regretted, and my tat's aren't any of them. I thought about them for years before deciding what to have and designing or finding the original illustrations. The Ogham on my wrist says 'this too shall pass', as it happens. Plenty of people have random bits of text in various languages allegedly saying different things, Ogham is an early British pre-Anglo Saxon script, so more appropriate for an English bloke, I feel.
To repeat, though, don't get a tattoo just because you think you ought to, you have to want it, and be comfortable with living with it. Ignore TJ, he doesn't like anything very much, and disapproves of anyone doing any of it. ?

FWIW... I'm about 20% covered in tats.. I got almost all of them while drunk and/or deluded.. and a few of the designs were thought up on the way to the shop..

and if I stop to think about it.. I don't regret spending money on any of mine either..

I saw a guy today finishing a 7km, 400m climb in a vest and shorts at 5ºC, rain and wind. He had tatoos on both arms. Tattoos make you double hard, FACT.
In fact tattoos are probably triple hard as not even Chuck can defend himself against the power of tattoos.

I can't shake the idea of a penny farthing tattoo. I love the shape of them and what they paved the way for. Just where...thinking left calf (I have something on my right calf).

Have you thought about fractal or repeat patterns? Or using the same pattern as chainring teeth to outline a different image. I like the rotational symmetry idea.

You'll never get a full thread of agreement, but I think the graphic can be refined and personalised. Also, where?

As an art form there are some great artists and inks around but sadly even more awful tat as tats. The guy off London Ink did a great cycling one, the customer posted it on here if you can work the search thingy out.

There's a secret way of getting these that doesn't involve being injected with ink.

Anyone got a link to a thread from a year or so back where I guy popped into town and got a chainring tattoo? I think it was a Biopace one or something because it wasn't round.

Meh tattoos, just drag your brakes down a descent an then rest your chosen body part on a brake rotor.

That would be an awesome way to get a brand, no?

Get a rotor laser cut with your chosen design, go on a humungous descent braking like a ninny all the way, jump off the bike at the bottom and press your chosen body part to the rotor.

I still have a faint brand of a go kart heat shield on my arm from placing it on the exhaust when I turned round to point and laugh at my wife on our honeymoon as I zipped past her. I told myself then I would make my marriage last longer than the damage. Damn thing looks like it'll never go!

Coogan and plodtv, those are indeed pretty awful, and the one holyzeus posted is an awful waste of a very nice thigh. Interesting concept very poorly drawn and inked. Better drawn it would have worked really small on her ankle or somewhere more discrete, but that's embarrassingly badly done.

cool hand luck + 1

proof that cycling tattoo's are shit. "oooooooooh , look how different I am , I am more into bikes than you .......here's proof"

A Specialized tattoo - FFS!!!!

There was a thread on here about 4 months ago about shit cycling tattoo's .......it was laughable the stuff people had done and the fact that they had asked someone to do it.

And people wanting chainring marks tattoo'd - roadies actually called them "3rd cat tattoo's" and you'd be embarrassed having an oil one - let alone a permanent one.
