Similar to the London thread really, we are going to Liverpool at the end of the month for a long weekend. Evenings are sorted with meals out at posh restaurants, but we have a Friday afternoon, Full day Saturday and Sunday morning to fill up with interesting stuff. I am going with my wife and open to suggestions. We last went about thirty years ago but I am sure much has changed.

World Museum and Museum of Liverpool are both well worth a look.

World Museum has a planetarium where you can book to watch short films, highly recommended.

Unfortunately the Slavery and Maritime museums are closed at the moment.

For something quirky, Williamson Tunnels.

Very outdated museum, but if you have interest in WWII then the Western Approaches is unique.

See if there is anything on a St Lukes bombed out church, lots to eat and drink around Bold St. Around the cathedrals the Georgian quarter is architecturally 'pretty' and you can pee in a Listed toilet at the Philharmonic Dining Rooms. If you like Victoriana, a few pubs on Moorfields are interesting e.g. Lion Tavern, The Railway.

Are you chasing Beatles stuff? The tour of childhood homes is supposed to be very good but needs prebooking and takes 1/2 day.

And if the weather is ok, obviously a ferry across the Mersey to see the landmarks from the water.

Liverpool Cathedral and the catholic Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral are both very interesting buildings in very different styles.

Victoria Gallery and Walker Art Gallery are worth a look. I would have said Tate Modern but its relocated to smaller premises due to its building being renovated. Baltic Market for interesting stalls and a good food hall. I second the Mersey Ferry.

If you are visiting John Lennon's gaff don't forget to visit nearby Strawberry Field and Eleanor Rigby's grave (ok its an Eleanor Rigby's grave... but maybe it isn't.

+1 for the Williamson tunnels and the Western Approaches museum, maybe also consider the Mersey Tunnel tour? None of those are glamorous but they are interesting and you did say nerds!

Yep it's massive, but you'd have thought the Catholic one would be the bigger of the two - the size of them families.

Liverpool Catholic Cathedral- I think you mean Paddy's Wigwam.

Wander round the city centre and Albert Dock area and be amazed how much it's changed for the better.

Thanks for all the suggestions, enough to keep us busy. Won't be going to Chester this time though, been a few times and agree it is a lovely place.

Anglican cathedral is well worth a visit and I’d recommend getting the lift up to the top of the tower - view of Liverpool is amazing and it’s quite a dramatic walk past one of the largest church bells in the world. Also ask someone about the whispering arch, which is a very cool accidental acoustic phenomenon in one part of the church.

The statues on the beach are very good - Another place. It would be around 15 min train ride out of central, and then a short walk to the sea. So if you're active sort of visitors, up in the morning to see stuff, then you could fit it in no prob. If you want a more leisurely visit then it's maybe less appealing.
