Hi,
im in the market for either of the above but im not sure which is likely to suit me best. it'll be used for a couple of night in a row - so no long periods.
ive used a backpacker airbed before but never used a thermarest type matress. i'd probably go for a cheaper version of the thermarestif i go down that route
my question is - are self inflating matresses comfortable, and are they a good alternative to the backpacker airbed?

Not really sure what you mean by a backpacker air bed but I have found that a Thermarest is by far and away the most comfortable thing I have ever slept out on. They really are comfy and can be tailored to suit by altering the amount of air in them.
I can recommend that Alpkit Airic range of mattresses with the Fat Airic being hugely comfy but too fat for anything other than camping out of a car.
I use a cheap copy thermarest from Blacks, seems to do the job, keeps me warm and is comfortable enough for me, for a weeks trip.
cheers matthew_h i'll have a look at them
Another vote for the Airics. Great price and very comfortable too.
Another happy owner of multiple airics here
I've got a Vango 'thermarest' from Escape Route in Pitlochry. As lightweight and compact as the original. £35 for a full length one.
don't forget the thermarests have a lifetime warranty. There was a thread on here yesterday about self inflating mattresses and their associated tales of woe
for what its worth i have a full length lightweight for car camping etc and a 3/4 prolite 3 for bivvies. Ive used the 3/4 on snow for 2 weeks with a small sheet of karrimat for my feet and it was fine considering the whole lot weighed zip-all. Recommended
