yep. i've read the bike. it's a true story. it's a pretty amazing and the book is great. the book details his dreams about the child he one day hopes to have and there this bit with a bird that visits him. it's done really well in the book and it looks as though the film includes these elements. these bits are, seemingly, integral to his survival.

btw - the trailer uses the same Band of Horses 'Funeral' song that was used in the Danny McGaskill video.
