Large populations counter the effects of religion ?

I think what he was trying to say was that it's a muslim country, not one where there are numerous internal rifts between religious groups. That said, there are 6 officially recognised religions but sadly, athiesm or agnosticism aren't recognised (which may make it tough in a country where your ID card carries your religious affiliation) and blasphemy is illegal. Also its political system for a long time has hardly been a shining beacon of freedom.

In other words what he's trying to say is that religion doesn't have to be the cause of [i]"one gargantuan F-Up"[/i]. Which bears a striking resemblance to what I suggested.
