My first thought was the Rey was Lukes Daughter, but then Jedi are supposed to be celibate. I think she might be Leah's and she somehow hid her from Han. I'm now thinking that though Luke has been the key character, Leah might actually be the key and stronger in the Force. I can Imagine a the line in one of the sequels mid lightsaber fight Ren says to Rey "I am your brother".

I was just willing Admiral Akbar to come out with the line "We can't possibly repel firepower of that magnitude" when they were planning the assault on the planet.

I did say

I've seen better 3d
But I nearly reached out to touch the bow of the ssd when it poked its nose out of the screen.
No idea where snoke came from - my Starwars universe (EU) never happened - thanks Disney.

this made me laugh - How long do Mon Calamari live?

If they slow EP VIII down and head off in the same style but with the (mostly) new cast and a new direction... it's going to be incredible.

I wouldn't hold your breath for better films to come. Really enjoyed this one - properly crafted scifi- sets, locations, sound stages with shiny black floors - people acting with the spaces and people around them rather than mime artists in green boxes. But Disney has to turn the handle so fast to get the billions back they paid for the franchise now. One film a year from now on - they are just going to lack craft.

One film a year from now on

Not quite, 16 months till episode 8, 2 years after for episode 9.
They will do a film a year, but these will include the Rogue leader and Han solo movies (think ep 3.5 and 3.75...)
I actually shouted Akbar! at the movie screen when he appeared.
The woman next to me looked scared.

My students have just spent a lesson writing spoilers on mini whiteboards and leaving them in the classroom for tomorrow's classes to find

that's nice of them

I went in early and cleaned them off.

Regarding limbs, C3P0 had a red arm - that was not really explained even though specifically mentioned. Is it a special arm?

I couldn't tell in the end if Kylo Ren lost any limbs. I couldn't quite see what was going on at the end of the lightsaber fight with Rey. He certainly got a nice meaty scar across his face.

Not at all - they aren't being made one at a time, both Rogue One and Ep.VIII are already in full swing, and they are going to be made with as much care & craft as Ep.VII. You can take my word for it, I work at Industrial Light & Magic, the VFX company behind all the Star Wars films 🙂

Absolutely marvellous!!!

Blew my socks off - so much better than i had anticipated

For the person above who wrote Needed cool new spaceships...

Are you mental???? Was there not a massive cheer in the theatre when the Falcon first appeared?

If you want new ships, go back and watch the shite Ep. 1 to 3

Favourite character was Chewy - proper scene stealer

Loved it and i'm still buzzing

Wow

Just back. Had the cinema all to myself apart from one guy a couple of rows in front.

It is absolutely fantastic.

When the falcon appears I gasped and was in tears. The whole thing was such a big part of my childhood.

Loads more welling up moments.

Such a good job by Abrams.

As a minimum:
Ep4 - Everything
Ep5 - Slave 1, Tie Bombers
Ep6 - B wing, A wing, Scout speeder bike
Ep1 - Naboo Fighter, Nubian Royal Starship
Ep2 - Jedi starfighter, Republic gunship, Dooku's sailship
Ep3 - New Jedi starfighter
Ep7 - Rey's Massey Ferguson rip off, Imperial shuttle painted black, New sensor dish on the Falcon

Sorry, but it's important.

New 2 seater Tie Fighters
Massive hollowed-out planet with a massive gun in it
cool flappy-winged spaceship for Kylo Ren
new paint jobs on X Wings

there's probably a few more that you'll notice when you watch the film a few more times (you will be watching it a few more times, yes?)

Bit surprised by how [s]blinkered[/s] positive you all are. 😉
It was OK. 3.5 out of 5. Vast improvement on the last 3.

We re-watched the first 3 recently, and I have to say they're pretty shit. The music, set and costume design made Star Wars IMO.

It's essentially just Episode 4 again. Thought the first third was slow. Enjoyed the humour though.

Fairly sure the final scene was a mash up of the Old Man of Storr and St Kilda

Yeah there was a picture of Mark Hamill in a pub pouring a Guiness circulating at some point.

I enjoyed it, though did feel like a remake story wise - the Storm Trooper spinning/nunchuck/club thing was so cool. More of that please.

Going back to watch it again for sure.

Best joke of the film for a French audience is when Poe gives Finn his name because he's not going to call him FN 😀

Took my boys to see it yesterday and it's good, 'proper' star wars, unlike EPs 1-3. It's essentially a re-hash of EP4 but it had me grinning. laughing and the odd jaw drop so job done for me.
I'm probably in the minority but I thought Daisy Ridley was pretty wooden, her 'acting' face was gritting her teeth most of the way through. Kylo Ren looks far more interesting than Darth Vader ever was and Snoke is sackboy from Little Big Planet.

I couldn't help noticing that there are still no railings fitted on all of those high walkways.

That's the problem with super weapons, your basic heath and safety considerations take a bit of a back seat.

Took my boys to see it last night. All big fans and we all enjoyed it but i was a little disappointed with the plot. Felt like a reboot at times rather than a new chapter. Even some of the new characters are just new versions of established ones. Sets were awesome as were the cossies (although i think clone troopers look more menacing than the chunky, almost cuddly storm troopers). Some nice creatures too and just the right amount of humour and terror. Loved BB8 but wish C3PO would **** away off into the night.

Fingers cross that this is the slightly awkward movie that merges the old with something awesome and new.

I thought it was only me! The sound of the TIE fighters and Mellenium Falcon going into lightspeed. Same when the X Wings came across the water and the old characters appeared.

Was a bit dissapointed when the bad guy removed his mask, I was expecting a nasty looking thug instead of a pretty boy. How come his long hair wasn't sticking out the back of his helmet when he had it on?

Anyone remember sets of cards you could collect back in 1977, you'd get about 5 cards and a very hard stick of gum?

Really enjoyed it, although I feel like I need an episode 6.5 to fill in some details. I'll have to go and see it again.

I've read a few comments about the casting of Adam Driver as Kylo Ren - I think he's a brilliant choice. What did you want him to look like? He's Han and Leia's son - nasty thug wouldn't have fitted. The instances when he smashed up stuff linked really well for me to the moment he removes his mask - I saw him as a petulant child at that point albeit a really sinister and evil one.

For those of you wanting the previous 30 years filling in. They've produced a load of books and comics under the heading "journey to The Force Awakens" to do that.

I've not read any of them so I can't tell you if they answer your questions.

Having just seen it the initial reaction from my daughter was 'how did they get so old quick!' she only saw the originals a couple of years ago...!

It does have a reboot feel but surely that's the point - more of the things we loved and less of the stuff we didn't want. No trade negotiations, sanctions or fart jokes (yes there is a fart joke in Ep.1)

The only thing I really didn't like was Han & Rey finishing each other sentences but it's a minor quibble.

A few folk have mentioned disappointment that the plot borrows from ANH, but I think that's a point the writers are trying to make.

The universe the characters inhabit is locked in a struggle for balance, and when we come in, the balance is still shifted heavily towards one side. This explains the repetition: events are locked into a circle, and the only path out is the restoration of this balance.

This actually chimes with other stuff Abrams has done: Lost used this idea extensively.

I'm assuming that, as the story develops, we'll see this change.

Any good will I had towards the franchise was brutally murdered by the prequels so I had no desire to go. My friend pre booked tickets for me so I was out of excuses.

I thought it was okay, I'll be in no hurry to re-watch. A lot of the story telling seemed contrived and the whole plot was a bit cookie cutter-esque and reliant on coincidence. A bit more time spent on development or fleshing out some of the world and the characters would have been nice, instead it seemed reliant on the fact that you would associate one character with a similar one from the past.

The twist/shock reveal about Kylo ren seemed utterly pointless. He's wearing a mask, it wasn't implausible for Han not to recognise him....all Leia needed to say was find our son and then.....blamo he takes off the mask in the final battle scenes and it's actually a surprise.

I also felt as though it seemed unbelievable that he's some kind of badass sith leader already and yet two completely untrained individuals can hold him off in a sabre duel.

He should have been more of an understudy, and less of key villain character so when he's beaten (implausibly) by the girl he would have motivation to go away and redouble his efforts to become less shit at lightsabre driving, that along with his patricide would spark a more believable character arc.

Also a good number of the effects look like just that, Carrie Fisher's face appeared to be entirely CGI and Harrison Ford looked like he needed to take a dump (or had more interest in doing that). But I would go and see the next one out of curiosity and I imagine it'll be better.

Wow, just in from the pics. Total rehash of ANH. Biggest positive I can come up with is that it definitely has the same feel as the original trilogy.

Oh and why was Smeagol in it?

Just back from Cinema - adored every moment of it!

I'd heard somewhere poor old Han (and he did look old!) bought the farm, but I had no idea about who Kylo was (my spelling it probably way off) the only complaint from the group of 6-12 year old lads we took was that the ending was "stupid" - they wanted it to carry on! Broke a few hearts telling them it was 2 years before they actually heard Luke speak!

He's not Sith

Sith have the "Darth" prefix - Sidious, Maul, Vader etc

It was also mentioned in the film that he had abandoned his training and slaughtered the rest of the Jedi apprentices. I felt the character was portrayed as petulant and immature and far from the finished article. The Supreme Leader tells Hux at the end to get Ren and bring him to him to complete his training

Awesome. Nerdy or not, it's a lovely feeling to enjoy something so much that has been a part of my life for nearly 40 years. Made ten times better by watching my young kids get hooked on it too.

Regardless of his title (lets call him bad jedi), he was still the main villain of the piece. He could read minds, control people, had telekinesis, had his own fancy mask and lightsabre and yet he struggled to defeat two characters who had literally NEVER swung a light sabre. So my suspension of disbelief went right out the window.

There was a bit in the new film about the Sith being gone. It may have been Maz that said it. In the prequels they said the Sith had been gone for a millennia. Doubtful they'd pop up 30 years later.

Either way, my interpretation was Kylo Ren was far from the finished article. The Mega tantrum when he's told that BB-8 escaped etc. Plus he was injured by Chewie's bow caster.

Could Finn be a descendant of Mace Windu?

Is Rey Luke's daughter?

Is this possibly the geekiest conversation I've ever had?

And yet at the start we see him stopping a laser/phaser blast in mid flight and holding it there indefinitely. Not to mention the other jedi powers I mentioned. Stuff Luke couldn't do even when he was training with Yoda.

Never given any reason to suppose anything other than that in the world of the film. But if you want to go into it I thought lightsabres were weapons only jedi used "from a more civilised time" or some such.

But he's not a Jedi/Sith - he's in training, so that implies he's not the finished article and since he lets his emotions get in the way prone to errors.

Fin wasn't too hot with the Lightsaber, he got his ass kicked by Kylo and the funky Stormtrooper with the lightning rod thing.

Rey clearly has blood rich in midichlorians so seems to be able to do things well that she's never done before - like flying the Falcon (talented pilot like her dad - if it is Luke?), Fixing the Falcon (talented mechanic like her grandad) and she was pretty handy with that stick thing as it was her weapon of choice when she was a scavenger, so not a great leap from a stick to a lightsaber.

I’m glad there was no mention of midichlorians this time, it always struck me as a pseudo-science attempt to unnecessarily explain the mechanics of ‘the Force’.

‘May the Force be with you’ also sounds better than ‘May your blood be rich with midichlorians’.

As to how the two untrained fighters were able to fight Kylo so well - you can't forget they did have the advantage of not having been shot by Chewie just moments before - they clearly showed he was wounded to emphasise it, maybe even twice.

If the movies follow any of the lore from the books that have been written over the past 30 years then, Rey and Ben are brother and sister albeit with their names changed. Jacen and Jaina Solo are Han and Leias kids and Jacen becomes a Sith Lord (Darth Caedus). They both trained under Luke at the Jedi Academy. However I remember reading that all should be forgotten about what has gone before, which is a shame. However it's certainly looking like it's heading that way.

It's a remake of the Empire Strikes back with a villain that's trying really, really hard to be like Snape from Harry Potter but failing. I stayed to end just in case there was something new, I left feeling I'd wasted time and money.

With a couple of days to reflect on it, I'm going to score it 2/10. I got dragged along to see The Lady in the Van a couple of weeks ago, that's pretty bad but not as bad as Star Wars.

There's a fairly plausible theory that Rey was at Luke's academy as a small child and therefore would have some force/jedi training - hence the ease she picked up flying/lightsable fighting/mind tricks.

The theory is that KR was at the academy, went bad and killed some other students. Academy was shut down and Luke went into hiding.

Rey is a Skywalker/Solo and was in training but quite young. She was then sent away/hidden on Jacku with Max Von Sydow character to watch over her.

That was awesome. I found myself with tears in my eyes all through the film. Can't wait to go again.

Yes, it echoes all the old films, but that's what I loved about it.

All we need to do now is round up all the DVDs of the prequels and have a mass burning.

A brilliantly made film which will pull in us '40 something year old's' whilst also appealing to the 'yoof' of today

Yes - some glaring plot holes - but i really don't care as the original three were pretty terrible in many ways - but they were the best films of my childhood

Christ - i even watched Empire Strikes Back backwards on a betamax... 🙂

Will be going to see it again ASAP 🙂

4o years old here and loved every minute of it , my wife watched ESB when it first came out and was hooked again this evening , every sound from the Falcon and Tie fighters sent a shiver down my spine

The plot had a few holes in it ,the story as a little bit a new hope but it didn't matter , 2 hours of being that child again wanting to be a Jedi.

Loved it and will be back before the years end to watch it again

Maybe that is why he is so angry, and keeps beating the shit out of inanimate objects with his lightsabre.

I thought it was OK but not amazing - I can see it would be really enjoyable for a younger generation. For me it was all just a bit obvious and contrived (as are the first couple of films seen through adult eyes). All the talk of "nearly in tears" and stuff makes me want to hurl, yes it was a big deal in many of our childhoods but get a grip.
