Seeing as TJ's favourite nazis the [s]BNP[/s], sorry I mean SNP, are banging on about the shocking cost of Buckie again, I think it's a good opportunity to put this back up. I first compiled this in March this year when 50p a unit (5p/ml) was being bandied about. Interestingly I had a conversation with a food retail analyst not that long ago who said Id be shocked at just how much of a loss the big supermarkets are willing to take on booze.
So will the EU come to the defence of the Weegie lush? - there seems to be plenty of confidence that minimum pricing would be struck down by the EU courts. Where would you price it? Interestingly buckie appears to be one of those drinks already priced over the minimum rate, but I did get my pricing from online supermarkets, so if someone on here is willing to own up to knowing just how much a bottle of Buckfast really costs in a Gorbals cornershop, let me know and we'll work out the real street price per ml.
For comparison, 50p a unit would mean about £5 minimum for a bottle of wine and £15 for a bottle of whisky.
It won't have to go to the EU - the rest of the MSPs are going to vot the measure down.
I don't think you have your sums right anyway
Why the cheap shot abut nazis? Its that sort of comment that makes you sound like a swivel eyed right wing nutter
I have my sums right, dont worry. My sample of prices, however, may be distorted by using only online sources.
Really? - how many units in a bottle of wine / whisky?
Cheapo cider is down to around 15p a unit or less
It's difficult for us to check the base data for your graph (which looks very pretty, by the way).
Perhaps each datum wants the purchase unit price visible, e.g. £3:90/75cl.
how many units in a bottle of wine / whisky
all 'average values'....
'normal' cider/lager/beer 4-5 units/litre
'strong' cider 7-8 units/litre
'super strength' lager 9 units/litre
wine 12 units/litre
spirits 40 units/litre
I think you also need to do some qualitative research rather than just quantitative.
Buy a bottle of each and sit on a park bench and record how many pigeons you shout at after each drink and how you imagine they thought about it.
so if wine is 12 units a litre thats 8 / 9 units a bottle at 50 p a unit = £4 - £4.50
Measure's are likely to get voted down, can't pay more for Sherry for Abigail's party y'know...
