So, I'm getting myself organised for Christmas and I've just bought a Lego set for my son, 130 quid from e-bay which was the least expensive I could find in the UK for this particular LoTR set. Delivery is to my Mum whose coming out for Christmas (I live in NZ) so she'll bring it with her. Now I do know this stuff is expensive and I have a choice not to buy it, it's also something I'm only doing because I can buy in the UK (The same set in the shops out here is $442) that's over 220 quid. Anyone else planning to buy stupidly expensive presents at Christmas or have an interest in a boycott of anything on grounds of pricing?
The s****y Lego sets are crazy money. I stand and gawp at them when we make the trip to Toysaurus but the money us too much. Lego architect stuff even more so.
Coke and hookers.
Have you seen how much they cost these days!
Not after last year. Got my daughter a lego set which cost 70, shes played with it twice.
You can get Lego hookers?
Ooh, a choice of four holes.
The stuff costs an arm and a leg(o) IGMC !
In my day (!) I would spend the better part of a year saving up for a modest set, which would become a sacred object in my bedroom. Years later after moving out of home I was highly bothered when I discovered that my mum had given them away to children I hadn't even met. Still not over it.
Today Lego seems very affordable by comparison. I steer clear of the themed sets, but my son has Lego riches - and it does get used to death. Not just by me.
When lego is about 2/3 of RRP, thin it's ok value I think.
The best value is getting a load off ebay that's collect-only though.
That's the lego that gets used the most in our house - that and the motors sets.
The big sets tend to stay as sets instead of being mixed in, which I think limits their appeal.
I remember getting a set of Lego technic for Christmas in the late 80s. It cost about £100 then. Massive pneumatic truck with compressor. Had a great time building and playing with that.
My mum gave my Lego away when I went to uni 🙁 In a year or two my elder will be old enough for dinner nice Lego. I can't wait 🙂

When I was a kid Lego used to do books with extra instructions, for multi-sets. Ie, they'd tell you which two sets you needed to build some new uber-model or other. I used to love those, haven't seen anything like it in years.
Lego for kids comes in buckets.
What you are buying is lego for adults to reminisce about a utopian childhood that never really existed.
We bought loads of random second hand Lego off ebay. The kids love it.
My nephew has sets and doesn't make anything with them other than the model it is supposed to be.
I think loads of random bricks and no instructions is better for the imagination.
Lego is expensive but not extortionate IMO given the quality of the product.
If you want cheaper Lego in the UK download the HUKD app and set up an alert. There are often discounts on particular sets up to 30-40% at various online retailers but you have to be quick as the good ones sell out very quickly.
Plenty of offers in the run-up to Christmas e.g, 3 for 2 @ Argos, 20% at Toys r Us, etc
Also if you have a large Tesco, ASDA or sainsburys nearby it is worth popping in occasionally as they sometimes have massive reductions when they are clearing stock for a new range - quite common with LOTR sets especially as new ones come out pretty often.
Was in Hamleys last Sat..
(Not a usual haunt I should point out).
The most expensive set they do is a Star Wars something or other, at an eye watering £349.
Had 3,800 peices.
If I totted up all my lads Lego & Playmobil I reckon on £1.5k easily.
They do use it a lot though.
Our Scout leader has two big trunks of Lego, we have as a back up activity on Beavers sleepovers.
Tip it out on the floor & 24 kids are instantly engrossed.
I have bought a few kg of assorted lego from ebay to supplement the odd proper set. Kids the boy happy.
