Any Instagram users in?
I use it as a marketing tool primarily for a little side-business.
One annoying thing I've noticed is people following you, then un-following once you follow them back. Unless they're an obvious bot, I'll generally follow them back out of support, especially if they're doing something similar or interesting.
Now the thing is, as far as I'me aware - it's not that simple to find out who has done this. It looks like the only way to do it is to manually go through people you follow and try to remember if they were following you back. And nobody has the time or inclination to do this. Something that I think these aspiring roasters bank on.
So it's recently started to grate that I'm following all these gits because I've got better things to do than sit down and spend time trying to extract them. And at the same time - Instagram is a valuable marketing tool... It's primarily small business/self-promoters doing this. Obviously big blue-tick accounts I follow I don't expect a follow back.
What to do? Is there a hack, or an app? Ignore it?
Cheers
app called 'followers' - beware though it will just piss you off when you see people unfollow you.
Ignore it, randos follow me all the time. Don't waste energy following people back unless you have actual dealings with them, Instagram doesn't work like that.
Yup, don't follow randoms back - even the hot blonde women with large boobs.
I just wait and see if they put likes on my photos, then if their content is of interest I'll follow back

This +1
Anyone want to follow feel free 😉
Or
Interesting, thank you.
Might try the app to shake off the current leeches and then follow the advice of not following randoms.
I think I saw something about an app that you can use to see who the useful followers are. Basically less is more under normal rules unless you're trending or paying for exposure. Insta/Facebook isn't great for exposure unless someone is managing it tbh.
I'm been building my insta following for my web business - I only follow people with a similar interest / have a similar number of followers. Engaging with other people's content is a better way of building a following and respond to everyone's comments. I ignore anyone with thousands of followers - they're probably bots. I do have an app to check followers and dump anyone whose followed/unfollowed, but you have to be careful as Instagram doesn't like people who use unauthorised apps.
Also, how do you stop the endless notifications 'so and so added to their stories' 'so and so followed so and so' etc etc
I generally don't follow people who follow me. They actually have to have something of interest (big boobs do count). If they constantly post crap to their stories I'll unfollow though. I look at the people who like my posts as well. I can't be arsed having lots of updates in my stream either.
I have just went through who I follow and got rid of a few people that don't follow back or got no interest any more.
how do you stop the endless notifications
That's just in your profile settings, you can switch it all off or just certain things.
Have you switched your account to business account? I think you might get what you want by doing that, you get an "insights" tab which gives you more info. I've just switched mine for something to do, but it takes 7 days to gather information and give feedback. You can skip the steps where it asks for contact details etc.
I get this quite a lot. I tend to just check their profile out when they follow me and follow them back if I want to.
I often get messages from randoms asking me to give them a shout out to get them more followers. I’ve to work out what giving a “shout out” actually means.

Put a third party app on my Ipad this afternoon to see who I was following that wasn't following me back. The "free" version of the App doesn't allow you to delete the list of people it comes up with, but I used my phone to find and delete the people anyway. Bit long winded but I am now following several hundred less people than I was an hour ago....
I follow nearly 6x as many people as follow me. I don’t think I’ve ever followed someone because they’ve followed me or liked a picture. I follow them because I like the pictures they post and it makes for an interesting feed.
I have no commercial interest in it though...

My favorite baiting was some one who realised that simply following people wasn't cutting it. So they started commenting, perhaps with a 'bot or maybe cutting cutting and pasting. But obviously the comment has to be very general. So I got a follow and this comment on my latest photo. "It's a nice content"
Here's me
Plus still one of my favorite instagram posts
Doubt people will like mine, mostly full of kittens currently.
I run a couple of accounts on instagram/facebook and use a 3rd party app to see who has unfollowed I follow back those of interest or if i see a commercial value, after a while you get used to knowing those that are bots or follow to get follow backs etc especially if the ratio is way off, like 15k followers but only follow 500.
I used to post on Instagram when I was working as a photographer. I never got a single message or query or job from it whatsoever. It was handy to have it so people can quickly see what you're all about but no job ever came via that platform. Maybe I was doing it wrong. I'm not a natural networker and the people who get really big seem to be pathological attention seekers with no sense of shame or embarrassment.
I've only just posted a few pictures after a year off. Now that I'm an office dweller I don't have anything interesting to share. I have never and will never take a picture of my own face or my dinner.
Weekends like this were 'work' for a while. I really miss it but I prefer not living in poverty.
