IF YOU grew up summoning clouds with your fingers, praying for giant sideburns and begging not to be Pigsy in fake fights with your brother, prepare to be overjoyed.

Monkey is back.

The supernatural hero born from an egg on a mountain top is making a long-anticipated return to the small screen in 2018 under a partnership with ABC, TVNZ and Netflix.

Titled The Legend of Monkey, the revamped version of the cult TV series is currently being filmed in New Zealand and will screen in ten half-hour episodes on ABC, TVNZ and Netflix.

The original series, titled Saiyuki but known as Monkey Magic because of its theme song, mesmerised generations of kids during the 1980s and even 1990s.

The Japanese series based on the 16th Century Chinese fable Journey to the West was dubbed in English and broadcast in Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.

It featured fantastic special effects for its time, as well as martial arts fighting and stunning scenery filmed in north west China and inner Mongolia.
Monkey, the title character in the original series, was a skilled fighter who becomes a brash king of a monkey tribe, and the theme song claimed he was "the punkiest monkey that ever popped".
Monkey with the monk Tripitaka was tasked to undertake a pilgrimage from China to India to fetch holy scriptures.

“The mythical tale of the Monkey King is a story that continues to captivate global audiences,” said Michael Carrington, Head of Children’s at ABC Television.

“Our production partner Seesaw Films is bringing The Legend of Monkey to life through incredible locations and sets, an acclaimed production team and an exciting diverse young cast.

“We can’t wait for fans to see this new series that features the heroes they love and we are just as excited to introduce this reimagined magical and exciting world to a whole new generation of viewers.”
Pigsy, the pig monster consumed with lust and gluttony, who was expelled from Heaven after harassing the Star Princess Vega — the Jade Emperor's mistress — for a kiss.

The new series is expected to a blockbuster fantasy affair, with purpose-built sets and Lord of the Rings style scenery. It will follow a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey as they attempt to bring an end to a demonic reign of chaos and restore balance to their world.
Monkey Magic Theme songs

The cast includes Chai Hansen (Mako Mermaids, The 100) as Monkey, with Luciane Buchanan (Filthy Rich, Blue Rose) playing Tripitaka, Josh Thomson (Terry Teo, 7 Days, The Project) playing Pigsy and Emilie Cocquerel (Lion, An Accidental Soldier) playing Sandy.

The new series is being produced by Seesaw Films and Jump Film & TV in partnership with the ABC, Netflix and TVNZ. It will premiere first on ABC and TVNZ next year and Netflix will screen the series globally to its 93 million members.

Dunno about you but I still get chills watching the opening sequence.

Impossible to recreate the novelty of the bizarre that, that show had in its day, and seen through young eyes.

I really wish they wouldn't keep knackering the past. 🙄

Sorry, I'm sure some will enjoy it, but I'll give it a miss just as I refuse to watch the new Karate Kid, Point Break, Dukes of Hazzard etc... 🙂

It was the comedy English dubbing that made it brilliant. How are they going to recreate that magic?

I don't think they will either. The original will still be ace, maybe best to regard the remake as a different show altogether? Sure it'll still be reasonably worth watching though.

There are loads of Japanese and Chinese films and tv shows based or inspired by the same stories as "Monkey". I think there has already been a remake of the show in question too? So if this is a deliberate effort to riff on the dubbed version of the show it could be a car crash. Or...it could be brilliant, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Anyone looking for some Monkey style nostalgia cold do a lot worse than check out Samurai Jack.

This politically incorrect moment of Monkey Magic was the stuff of legend when I was at school.

I'll let you into a little secret. The past still exists, nothing we do today can possibly change that.

I'm not normally a fan of dubbed stuff, but Monkey dubbed in English was such a classic I grew up on. Comedy dubbing.

Interesting that much later they dug out a whole pile of episodes that never aired in the UK and got the original voice actors to dub those too.

p.s. Journey to the West is what Monkey was based on.

Anyway, a glossy remake, not sure. Will look nice, but it was the comedy of it and silly dubbed accents that made it fun.

Which reminds me - there will no doubt be a 'Back To The Future' remake at some time in the [s]past[/s] [s]future[/s] future-past. And there is absolutely nothing we can do to change that. Unless? Wait... 💡 8)

Big monkey fan here (I still have the theme music on 7" single) and this will fail for two reasons:
The priest won't be confusing, and Piggsy won't be rapey enough. 🙂

Born from an egg on a mountain top
The punkiest monkey that ever popped
He knew every magic trick under the sun
To tease the Gods
And everyone and have some fun

Monkey and the Water Margin were amazing, mad tele. Two friends and I went out one New Year dressed as Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy. Half the people loved it, the other half had no idea who we were supposed to be.

After watching Percy's clip it reminded me that I took a load of homophobic abuse from my heavy metal school friends, for confessing my desire for Tripitaka . The fools.
