O.M.G.!

I just watched this video from Australia, and I could not stop drooling.

I could not have even imagine such a thing of beauty could be created.

Camping folk on STW, enjoy.

I have half a mind to sell my house, and live out the rest of my days in that.

Well, if you must have a caravan I suppose that one is acceptable.

I'm not sure it's caravanning or camping. All I know is that my neighbours would scoff if I bought a caravan, but if I put that on the back of my Land Rover, they'd want to come on holiday too.

That's rad... Better not show my dad. Last time I showed him something like this he spent nearly £1000 on an oztent!

It's a caravan that's not as effective or practical as a caravan! Might be ok for oz but you'd look a bit of a tit with that behind your mondeo on the caravan club site in dawlish next bank holiday...

The ones I've seen are very small inside and quite heavy for their size when . A roof tent and awning would be a better option IMHO, it's also a far cheaper one as well.

There's a big love of going camping in Oz, but a lot of people don't seem to want to leave their home comforts behind - I've event seen powered sites with people sitting under their gazebo's on sofa's watching TV and reaching for a cold one out of the full size fridge they've brought with them! It doesn't stack up as camping for me, which should be slightly different to being at home!

Better than being on unpowered sites with a generator doing the same which is something my parent's have encountered a bit on their travels.

We're doing the drive from Melbourne to Darwin with them and their trailer tent in July, can't wait. Only one of these though

What works in terms of camping equipment over there is totally different to camping in the UK.

It looks to be a tent trying to be a caravan or a caravan trying to be a tent, so neither one thing or another. I'd have thought you either want the mod cons so get a caravan or you want light weight and compact so get a tent!

Same in NZ. I worked in Kathmandu (outdoor shop) for a while and regularly had customers coming in asking what they could buy next 'cos they had everything.

Also did the Taupo day/night challenge 12hr race and one team had a hot tub sat next to the race course on the back of a trailer!

For a more minimalist approach in Oz:

Don't consider Teetosugars, do it. I regret not doing it when the chance was there.

@Epicyclo - My lad loves those tiny Bedford/Daihatsu vans - that may just be the answer to his first car/camper dream (wants a Bay but that's not going to happen for so many reasons).:

Sorry, not impressed. Proper camping is for going to amazing places:

[img] [/img]

There's about 2miles of tarmac 50miles away, and no more for about 400miles.

That's my brother's setup. He's come from absolutely minimalist camping (when I lived in Oz, we used to just stop, light a fire, and sleep on the ground in what we wore,no sleeping bags or such luxuries) so I had fun accusing him of getting soft.

But it is a brilliant setup, I'd love to have the same for over here because I've also gone soft in my old age, and there's no way I'd need a bigger vehicle, my wife's idea of camping involves hotels.

Does anyone know if there is a similar rooftop kit being sold here?

I spent 3 months in one of these on my last trip to Oz

[img] [/img]

It's possibly "the most marvellous camping thing ever built". 🙂

Greybeard wins the thread

I've tried trailer tents and they are rubbish, a flawed concept, as are caravans. A proper tent and as little kit as you can get away with is what it's all about

It's a 'Caravamper' & looks shit. Like those Landy's with a tent on the roof, dopey.

Good luck taking your caravan off road, it probably struggles in a light breeze...
