6/ Some of the CGI of younger Luke appeared to be a pile of body parts glued together,
When was that, I don't remember that bit.
My Rating: A generous 6/10
Amen
It also made me think of this (Jump to 50s)
I think it was the first flashback to him stood over Ben/Ren.
Ah, gotcha. I doin't realise it was CGI, I just thought it was his acting 😉
It was as if millions of plot threads cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced
Very good 🙂
Enjoyed it 🙂
When was that, I don't remember that bit.
The Luke on the salt planet (Crait?) was a much younger version of his current self, as in dark hair (much less grey) and a lot slimmer. I'm guessing it was to match what he looked like when Ren last saw him at the temple. He also moved in a very different way to the retired, island Luke- I'm assumming it was a stunt double with Luke's head stuck on top
"27 b slash 6":
They were effectively speeders
Ski Speeders no less 😆
Was I the only one hoping Finn was going to actually sacrifice himself and fly into the laser?
No.
And 'godspeed' and use of the word 'soul' can get in the ****ing sea as well.
6/10, only because it's Star Wars. I did enjoy the Poe 'on hold' bit at the start though, that was funny, but there were too many one-liners and lots of the dialogue was really clunky. The hyperspace jump through the flagship was ace. I'll still buy the DVD when it comes out... 😆
edit- this mainly though-
I thought this was just a lame attempt to jump on the bandwagon of films such as GOTG/Deadpool/Star Trek reboot which are popularising this style of humour. Doesn't work IMO in a Star Wars film which is supposed to be po-faced.
I was thinking, FFS, they've finished ripping off all the old SW films (battle of Hoth?!) now they're going for Independence Day!!No.
My plot hole is, if entering light speed in kamikaze move was enough to largely destroy the entire enemy fleet, why not do that from the start?
Empty 1 ship out, bar a pilot. Turn around, enter light speed clean through them, destroy and carry on about your business.
Not really a plot hole IMO (although I did think the same at first until I'd given it a bit more thought!) The transports weren't supposed to be detectable. I suspect the idea of a suicide mission as a desperation move to save your friends is "acceptable" whereas it might otherwise come off a bit terrorist-y if there were still other options. 🙂
if there were still other options.
like an auto-pilot? or a droid? or a little nodding bird to press the button Homer Simpson style
Or even just build a big missile with a hyperdrive...

As the film would be a lot shorter. 🙄

Thanks!
Just watching Rebels season 3 with the boy. Kanan just did a Mary Poppins style space walk...so you see what Leia did was possible from a certain point of view!
Not read all of the posts in thread.
Watched it last night, disappointed that they really are struggling for new original plots.
So much is rehashed from previous films - attacking rebel base = empire strikes strikes back. Snokes captured Rey and tried to turn her - return of the Jedi.
C'mon.
Be interesting to see how the next few episodes pan out now all the old characters are out. Star wars The next generation...
Not quite all of them C3PO and R2D2 are still there...as is Chewbacca
They'll be space junk soon enough and Chewwy will get toasted when the Porgs get their revenge.
you're a miserable bunch. it's like you're looking for problems just so you can point them out, rather than just sitting back and enjoying the ride.
...from a certain point of view
Nice!
Went in with no expectations and not looking for faults but thought it was utter guff! Contrived and ludicrous at times (Mary poppins moment had me and the other half looking at each other going WTF)
It was too long and very cheesy. The only bit I thought was good was the moment the ships smashed and it went silent that was cool.
I've only skimmed the other comments but can't believe people are falling for believing Ren telling Rey her parents are nobody's!! He only did that to try to draw her to the dark side.
They are blatantly brother and sister, maybe twins so rehashing that again like everything else from this and the last film and saving the big reveal for the next film.
This is the first time I've come out of a star wars film feeling completely cold and that I will not bother with cinema for the next one. I'll give it a generous 6 and accept that in my mid 30's I'm no longer the target audience for Star wars.

Why?? Wouldn't an average film score 5? You're being way too kind to this turkey
Yes maybe 4 or 5 to be honest
If they were brother and sister I think Leia and Han might have known about it!
I'm going to see it again tonight.
I could be mistaken but I'm sure Chrome Dome Phasma told Finn that he was their tracking beacon when they were fighting at the end.
When Hux told Snoke that they had the Rebels on the end of a string, the next scene was Finn too...
The film would have been a lot shorter if the Rebels had realised that the reason the First Order could track them through hyperspace was because they had a First Order deserter on board. Give him a small craft and a fake mission, let him get clear then jump to hyperspace.. 😆
Traditional Birthday treat watch for me and I thought...
Adam Driver is an excellent actor, he’s certainly got the character to play an evil baddy and he’s really pulled this role out. If it wasn’t for him, this film would be pants “of the first order”
Domhnall Gleason, fabulously tense. Grittingly oppressive. He’s playing this like a frustrated under pressure colleague I know well, threatening with control issues. Another standout character for me.
Daisy Ridley, nope. Didn’t like her in the last film and fail to see any redeeming features in this episode. I hope they’re about to change her for someone else, be fitting to get someone who can act.
Casting Oz Clark as Snoke was hilarious.
The rest came and went, didn’t really warm to any others.
Story line is lame, for the first hour it was touch and go whether to walk out, but then it turned into a plot. The scene about the rebels heading to the Planet was dull and too long, the only redeeming feature was when the supply ship turned and flew into a destroyer and the film stopped and went quiet.. that was impressive and yet didn’t fit within the film itself. It was a scene I think came from another movie and adapted for this film, glad it was in because that sequence was ace. The next cracking scene came at the end when Kylo turned apoplectic and gave the order to fire all weapons at Luke, then Hux gave the order and they crossed anger/leadership angst.. that was clever.
The rest, came and went in a blur of mild mannered dullness.
Fail to see where this series can go now, I think the storylines are too drawn out and failing to fulfill some decent plot lines.. if this is what I’m coming to expect then I think I’ve grown up and will wait until it gets endless replays on Sky and not bother with seeing it at the movies.
Fail to see where this series can go now, I think the storylines are too drawn out and failing to fulfill some decent plot lines..
I'm with you. It definitely doesn't feel like the mid-part of a trilogy. It could've been the final episode of one, with the tone set up for countless spin off stuff. Can't say I don't think that's intentional.

Rebels all most destroyed, Kylo now supreme leader who is massively pissed of with Rey. Well I suspect he’ll be hunting down the rebels and Rey now to to try wipeout the others with the force. You know just like episodes 1 to 7.
Tauntaun: A Star Wars Story is an upcoming American space Western film centered on that Tauntaun off Hoth, a character from the Star Wars franchise. It will follow events leading up to his cruel demise at the lazerstick of a frosty Jedi featuring a voiceover from David Attenborough.
Few rebels left I admit, but Rey has the Jedi instruction manuals and clearly there are some Jedi's in waiting. Rey trains up new Jedi as rebels rebuild their forces then we have epic showdown in last film.
Saw it last night with my son. I am now older than my dad was when he took me to see Episode IV and my son is old than I was - makes me realise how much time has gone and how much our expectations have changed.
Star Wars: A New Hope was a game changer - stuff the plot - it changed the way that films were done. The rest can never be the same.
However I enjoyed it (apart from the Mary Poppins moment) even if I did have to suspend my science knowledge for some parts. Even though it was a long film, I did not notice how long it was (except for the casino bit which really needed to be cut).
Plus Kylo Ren has more changes of heart and mood than my wife dress shopping.
This. For the ultimate dark side bad guy he's awfully conflicted.
Didn't really see why he went to the dark side either unlike Anakin's slow descent over three films. What were Leia and Han doing while he was turning to the dark side? Just seemed odd.
Snoke was crap, could he really not sense that Ren was about to use Reys lightsabre against him? Because everyone else in the cinema could.

It's been left wide open hasn't it? Maybe there'll be more low level Force users in the next film(s), rather than having it limited to light/dark Jedi/Sith? I dunno. I hope the next one's way better than this one though.
Fail to see where this series can go now, I think the storylines are too drawn out and failing to fulfill some decent plot lines..
They sent him to Jedi camp they weren’t aware.
Other than the milking scene and those stupid ****puffins,I really enjoyed it. I thought the silence after the Destroyer crash was inspired.Very impressive being at a big screen location and get a 'hear a pin drop' moment to last for those seconds.
Looking forward to seeing a second time over the Hols.
Nah, I'm still failing to see how a small number of "rebels" can do anything pro-active against the Order. Its too thin, a handful of badly weaponised gang running for cover each time the Order finds them in another part of the galaxy? Nah, bit like kiss chase in the school playing field.
A bit Benny Hill, all thats needed are the Order to dress in skimpy skirts, have large boobs and blond hair and chase an old bloke around a tree for 50mins.
There was a small glimmer of hope though I spotted for the rebels, did you see the young kid at the end of the film (the one who looked out into the sky, the kid with the broom) Well as he exited his Animals liar, he went to grab the broom and it floated towards him, not much.. just about a couple of feet.. easily missed if you aren't looking for it, but its a tiny glimmer of "Hope" for the rebels in that "the force" is still deep with some.
But, nah. Think I'm done with it all..

^ that. Sigh.

In other news, Disney seem to have acquired the rights to the orignal Star Wars as well as X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four. Part of me leapt for joy at the prospect of Massive Marvel Mayhem (© Stan Lee Alliteration Ltd.), the other part wept at the prospect of our Disney overlords taking even more of my money.

There you go that’s the plot.
not much.. just about a couple of feet.. easily missed if you aren't looking for it, but its a tiny glimmer of "Hope" for the rebels in that "the force" is still deep with some.
You’d have to clearing up your popcorn spillages to miss that bit, it was just the kid and his broom in shot.

Snoke was coercing Ren into feeling conflicted so that Rey could be lured to Snoke's mothership' believing she had a chance to turn him to the light, as explained during their confrontation
I am definitely looking forward more to the one-off films than i am the main story now, i really enjoyed Rogue One for what it was a Dirty Dozen style war film, and i think that the spin-offs give the directors chance to do what they really want to do and not have to worry about story-arcs and the like and they childish films that the main series are becoming.
Can we get a Tarantino 18 rated one!?
Snoke was coercing Ren into feeling conflicted so that Rey could be lured to Snoke's mothership' believing she had a chance to turn him to the light, as explained during their confrontation
And how did that work out for him?
Not buying it, he was all over the place in the last one as well.
they childish films that the main series are becoming.
They were always meant for kids.
Can we get a Tarantino 18 rated one!?
Or how about a John Woo one with Porgs instead of doves flying everywhere in the fight scenes?

Cut the head off the snake
If they were brother and sister I think Leia and Han might have known about it!
Not if she was taken or sent away as a baby for some as yet unexplained ludicrous reason.
And she can't sense it even though she's super-force girl.
If they were brother and sister I think Leia and Han might have known about it!

"Han, you remember that year when I got really fat, then all of a sudden got thin again. Weird eh?"
Virgin Leila. Interesting.
It'll have been Yoda getting up to no good!
Just saw it. After all the great reviews, I was so excited. Man alive did it suck?!!!!!!
Felt like any other CGI popcorn sci-fi film. Just not worthy of the Star Wars name. Maybe I am getting old (OK, I am getting old) and have 1977 rose tinted glasses, but even as a 44 year old I can watch A New Hope today and still enjoy it.
Too much women's lib, too many plot holes, too many Disney moments (riding flippin' space horses FFS?!), too many flippant endings to juicy open questions from The Force Awakens, too little tension and detail around Rey's training (how did she fight the most powerful leader of the Dark Side after basically 3 days of training when Luke spent months on Dagoba with Yoda and still wasn't ready?!).
And the CGI sucked too.
I hated it and for me the 19th December will be remembered as the day that the franchise died (and I even forgave episodes 1-3 in the end). How can this be worse than anything featuring Ja Ja flippin' Binks?!
For the avoidance of doubt, I didn't like it. Not one bit.
Just got back from the cinema, I’m sad to say I’m pretty disappointed.
I’m sure there’s a good film in there, but it’s lost in sea of silly jokes and worse still really bad acting - sad to say it, but there’s a reason why Mark Hamill hasn’t worked much since the original 3, he’s the worst thing in it. Frankly I’m glad Luke is dead, and sadly since Carrie Fisher passed away the final episode will just have the new cast which is no bad thing, they’re far better than the old ones.
I’m really gutted I didn’t like it, the Pro reviews were so glowing, and despite to avoid spoilers I avoided viewer reviews but it’s fair to say they’re much more mixed.

Too many people leaving the film early, made a bit of a racket.. but I waited until the end and noticed it. Thought I’d mention it in case you were one that left early..
Han, you remember that year when I got really fat, then all of a sudden got thin again. Weird eh?"
Omg seriously? I'm not suggesting Leia doesn't know she had a daughter but that she was given away for some as yet unexplained ludicrous reason like the rest of the ludicrous plot.
Watched it last night and read the thread after.
Opening feelings were it was ROTJ, 15 mins in I really didn't care, the opening stall them bit was weird but set the tone for a film that really enjoyed itself. I might be in the minority who can sit and absorb something for 2 1/2 hrs but it was compelling and well done.
Yes you had to suspend disbelief but there are people who can move rocks, lift spaceships and fly faster than light with no oxygen supply and ignore any decompression. If that bothers you then probably avoid films in general.
I laughed, I cried, I felt connected to the characters and loved it.
I'm not sure if that is the end of Snoke, but the birth of Ren into the supreme leader was a highlight, the fight and the reaction was well done and probably the highlight for me in there, it brings together the difficulty and the lack of an absolute path of right/wrong, the rage and anger in Rey is both important and difficult for her, she has no mentor now she has to choose her path.
Also the trailer was a great act of misdirection, well done with that.
Too much women's lib
😆

You lost me with your opening point!

You did actually suggest it though!

Not if she was taken or sent away as a baby for some as yet unexplained ludicrous reason.
Not sure why it would be ludicrous, surely it would be for similar reasons to Luke and Leia being separated?
Rey doesn’t have a ‘special’ lineage. It’s basically one of the major threads throughout the entire film.
Well it is but Kylo only tells her what he seen as her heritage is near the end, could be he was lying.
I mean “laser sword”?! It’s a ****ing Light Sabre FFS!
Not to mention - first half, the Rebels are trying to escape from the First Order, but they can’t so the first order inch closer and closer with a massive weapon much peril.
Wow, that was intense, what shall we do in the second half...
Second half, the Rebals are true to escape from the first Order, but they can’t do the first Order inch closer and closer with a massive weapon...

They were trying to show you that Luke was eschewing all that he used to hold dear. Not using the term 'light sabre' was a way of doing that.

Seriously? He was excellent. You seem to be mistaking him for the actual Luke Skywalker, as many have- he was an actor, playing a part, a part that called for him to show rejection of his previous life- I thought he did it brilliantly. You're disappointed that he's not the traditional Luke and I can get that, but his acting was peerless.
And- he's not dead....
I reckon he is dead and *might* come back as a force ghost. Snoke is dead and doesn't have a back story because they never wrote one. Who needs to know about the origin and motivation of the guy who destroyed Luke's legacy? Not important! Rey is a nobody because they wrote it that way after TFA. And Kylo isn't lying because that would imply a level of attention to the overall narrative that I don't believe is there.
If it turns out Andy Serkis is filming for IX I will extend a bit of hope that the story will be resolved at the end but I'm not convinced it will be right now.
and doesn't have a back story because they never wrote one

Do you think George Lucas is collecting negative reviews of the recent films for his scrapbook?
Doubtful, but he’s probably ready STW for insight and inspiration 😆
We all know The Franchise polarises opinion, and we’re all blessed with opinion 😆
I reckon he is dead and *might* come back as a force ghost
Inside knowledge says he has a cameo in the next film but someone close to him has a much bigger part - ghost Sith Lord anyone?
Yeah, it's shit isn't it? I was in denial for a bit there but no, it's shit.
'Laser sword', 'chrome dome', Maz's innuendo, 'godspeed' and 'soul', just get in the ****ing sea with the whole sorry lot.

I see your snarky STW response and I raise you this... listen from 18.50. Johnson says Snoke's story is not relevant to this one.

Mike, straight up there's a problem with that Vox summary - "galaxy-spanning"? It's set in another galaxy, neither close nor recent, as the first film made quite clear. How can I take anything they say seriously after that in the sub-heading?
do tell!I reckon he is dead and *might* come back as a force ghostInside knowledge says he has a cameo in the next film but someone close to him has a much bigger part - ghost Sith Lord anyone?

Glad you enjoyed it, that wasn't really my problem - I find that he gurns a lot, his expressions are over-the-top and unconvincing to me. "Peerless" is a bit strong, Denzel Washington in Training Day was peerless, Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds was peerless, Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men.
Did anyone notice how Astral Projection Luke was the imagine of the flash back? darker beard, shorter hair - oh and they CGI'd MH's head onto a body about 3 stone lighter than his?
I have to confess I thought it was pretty average.
Went with next-door neighbour (we're both in our 30's) and spent a rather uncomfortable couple of hours both wondering if the other thought it was as bad as we each did!
Good CGI (as expected) but just a bit too twee for me.
As mentioned above the space horses and casino sequence wasn't necessary,
Hammy acting (but not from Mark Hamill)
God-awful dialogue at times!
And a fairly thin plot.
I know I'll go and see the next one, because, well, its Star Wars, but I had such high hopes after Rogue One...sigh
