Well all those that bought snow shovels in the great pre-winter panic may get a chance to use them.

-3C at night ay hmm, warmer than it has been then.

It may just stay bitterly cold with only minor snow episodes.

Is this the same story as October? Remember the terrible weather we were going to have? Oh wait, the warmest October on record....

Temperatures will plunge to -3C (27F) overnight,

can it plunge to that in winter?
Surely plunge would need it to be way below normal
Wow winter will be cold shocker

We will have some hot days in summer

I bought the kids a new sledge each for Xmas, Santa forgot to put them out though so they're still hidden in the garage.

Didnt the Thames freeze over in the 1960's?

And we're afraid of -3......

Bloody shandy drinkers!

I don't think the Thames has frozen since the early 1800s, and it can't now, due to the fact the Thames bridges have more widely spaced supports, there is no still or slower water to be able to freeze.

It's winter, and cold/snowy weather is 'news'?

Good grief, I live in a really stupid country.

and it can't now

I don't believe that for a minute. Our shores have frozen in the past so why not the Thames (given cold enough weather).

from the comments bit

Here's some other awesome headlines about weather from the Daily EXpress

It was also wet and windy:

NOW BRITAIN FACES FLOODS (Jan 15)
65MPH STORMS TO HIT BRITAIN (Sep 7)
HURRICANE TO SMASH BRITAIN (Sep 10)
NEW HURRICANE TO HIT BRITAIN (Oct 4)
BRITAIN BRACED FOR NEW STORMS (Nov 28)
100MPH STORMS ON THEIR WAY (Dec 12)

Yet in the summer it was hot:

HOTTEST EASTER FOR 100 YEARS (Apr 23)
BRITAIN TO ROAST FOR A MONTH (May 5)
SUPER SUMMER TO LAST MONTHS (May 14)
HOTTEST SUMMER EVER ON THE WAY (May 21)
90°F KILLER HEATWAVE (Jun 25)
83°F (Sep 24)
90°F RED HOT OCTOBER (Sep 30)

Not one of these was factually correct....

What a brilliant paper!!!

Rubbish! It'll freeze if it gets cold enough - but maybe that would never get cold enough here....

And the warm water outflow from Didcot power station should prevent it from freezing.

There are many possible dooms that we may face, a frozen Thames is one of the least.

Here's what the Met Office says:

UK Outlook for Saturday 11 Feb 2012 to Saturday 25 Feb 2012:

Cold weather looks likely during this period, with both daytime maximum and nighttime minimum temperatures likely to be below or well below average in southern areas, and still below average in the north. Rainfall amounts should be around average in northern areas, with some snow at times. Further south rainfall is likely to be above average with some prolonged spells of rain possible, with also a risk of some significant falls of snow. Sunshine amounts will probably be around or slightly above average.

Updated: 1407 on Fri 27 Jan 2012

Thats a couple of weeks away. Hardly 'Day After Tomorrow' stuff is it?

From now till then its a bit cold but mainly oop North. Nice and sunny down here in the Sarf...

According to WeatherPro (MeteoGroup app), down here in Wilts it's going to be -3 at night and lows of 1-2 during the day next week. Bloody Fimbulwinter! Wargs and the Mara will be stalking the hills, I tell thee!
And a Hamster gave birth to a Jaguar, and moss grows on a south-facing wall.
We're all DOOMED!

some more from the comments...

And just to show how moronic this newspaper is, here are the other headlines from last autumn, telling us how bad the winter was going to be........you know, the winter we just had....the warmest on record

BRITAIN FACES AN EARLY BIG FREEZE (Sep 20)
-20°C TO HIT US IN WEEKS (Oct 8 )
BRITAIN FACES A MINI ‘ICE AGE’ (Oct 10)
ARCTIC BLAST TO BRING SNOW (Oct 15)
BIG FREEZE WILL KILL THOUSANDS (Oct 20)
ARMY PUT ON SNOW ALERT (Oct 30)
BIG SIBERIAN FREEZE TO HIT BRITAIN (Nov 2)
BRITAIN FACES KILLER ARCTIC BLAST (Dec 8 )
IT’S A WHITE CHRISTMAS! (Dec 17)

Pathetic excuse for a newspaper
