As an archaeology-crazed kid, Rosemary Sutcliffe'sThe Eagle of the Ninth was pretty much my favourite book - to the extent that I am reluctant to watch this... although the trailer doesn't look too bad.
its not had very good reviews
some questions being asked about the accuracy of Sutcliffe's novel at the moment...
but then again, it is a novel...
Is it the same thing as the Silchester Eagle?
I believe so
watching something on Discovery channel the other night, the Silchester Eagle turned out to be a civic thing, nothing to do with the military. Of course, Sutcliffe probably didn't know that at the time
Yeah, I suspect I will avoid it.
The trilogy to which it belongs is a stunning work of historical fiction for children - I guess some things are best left on the page, and in the imagination.
It used to sit in a shed / museum that was on the grounds of Silchester Rectory where my dad grew up... one of his chores as a lad was to polish the thing.
That is all.
