I assume he’s referring to me. The curse of ‘51 refers to the year that Mayo (county) last won the All Ireland football final. While passing through some village or other on their victory drive home, they “failed to pay respect” to a funeral that was on. A fairly grave offence in religiously obsessed rural Ireland. “May Mayo never win another All-Ireland while any members of this team are alive,” or some such were the words of the parish priest. There are still two alive (AFAIK) and Mayo have appeared in multiple all Ireland finals, especially in recent years, all of which they’ve lost. You’d feel for their fans to be fair.
Today they play Dublin at 5 o'clock in the All-Ireland football final. They’ll lose again.
