All in favour of using old buildings for new ventures rather than pull them down and stick a pre fab up, so in this instance I approve. Doesn't detract from my mistrust of Tesco though.

Im disappointed they couldnt have developed their shopfit to go with the vernacular - "upcycled" pews into shelving units. Turned the pulpit into the Customer Services tannoy station. Tuscan spicy olive mix in the font etc etc.

Can't see any issue with that whatsoever.

There are loads of old churches and chapels round here that are used as shops/bars/cafes/nightclubs etc.

Or is it just because its "evil Tesco" so we have to be "outraged" at the desecration of a holy building ?

That bank looks fantastic - and that was a time when they needed us to trust them, so they built 'solid'...

No corner shop is complete without a portico frontage.

Who is getting outraged? Calm down, it's not even 9am yet.

It's just so depressingly ugly and banal. You'd think a company with £billions could find at least one architect who could do something with that building that would improve the world we live in.

How long before we see disused mosques being converted to other uses?

...ok, fair enough, but then CG does live in a state of constant outrage.

Interesting question. Thing is, I don't know if you get many disused mosques.

I'm perfectly calm thanks.

I was asking a question. To see if that was the point of the thread ?

I live in York and round here there are Churches used as loads of different types of business all over town.

In the last couple of months I've been in an Indian Restaurant, two Cafes, and two Different Bars, all in old Churches, so I was wondering why a Tesco in a church is worthy of a thread that's all.

The most offensive thing about Tesco is their inexcusable use of primary colours. Their signage really is unforgivable

Well, this really will send the nay-sayers into a right old tizzy.
"It's Tesco so I MUST object"
"But that'll make me look like I believe in God"
"Arrgghhh whatdoIdonoooowwwww???"
🙂

Personally I think it's ace. Lovely old buildings being looked after. Love how they've managed to get the store in and leave the original features intact.

McDonald's are apparently doing something similar to an old pub in Farnborough. The place was falling down and damp when it was open, it's even worse after being boarded up for 4-5 years, in a right state. Nobody gave a shit about it when it was falling down, but, of course, now an 'evil multi national' is actually going to use it there's protests, Facebook groups, knitting circles, and other general outrage.
Cut'n'paste Internet opinions, don't ya just LOVE em? 🙂

I wonder if they'd have to maintain Sharia law as a condition of using it as a supermarket?

It offends my delicate aesthetic sensibilities Jamie. When I'm running the [s]country [/s] world (and it won't be long - you mark my words!!!) primary colours will be banned everywhere outside primary schools. So there! 😛

They took a listed building in Hove and ripped the facade off about 10 years ago.

Despite numerous judgements against them in various courts they still refuse to reinstate the original.
