Anybody watching the latest outbreak of marchy-shouty London stuff?

I've heard lots of mention of people demanding an "alternative" to the current economic strategy, but nobody seems to be able to explain what this "alternative" actually IS.

Oh wait - Brendan Barber says taxing the banks will make everything allright. He wants "investment in jobs". Sounds to me like old labourpains' "chuck money at it and hope it goes away" except of course, there isn't any money.

No no no - what we need is a few more shops trashed and banks graffitti-covered. That'll sort it.

Pffft.

If you think that taxing the banks so heavily they take their business elsewhere instead of providing a pint of cash to fill a tanker's worth of need is going to solve the problem, you're an even bigger idiot than Barber and his ilk.

Oh, now the "Anarchists" are attacking the Ritz. Persumably they want the government to give them enough money to afford a room there.

Woppit; you haven't the guts to go and publicly stand up for what you believe in, so the best you can do is slag folk off on a forum. Why weren't you down there telling people what you spout on here? Hmm? I'll tell you; because you're too weak.

You need to go and find some self-esteem mate. Because maybe, if you found some self-worth, you wouldn't need to attack others all the time. Why not try something creative, try and find something you've got some talent for? That could give you some sense of value.

Do all your colleagues take the piss out of you all the time? I bet they do.

Take, for example, those running our financial institutions. Many of them are once again picking up their seven-figure bonuses while the global dole queue they helped to cause hits 35 million. If it wasn't for the taxes of you and me, their banks would have gone bust months ago. It cannot be right that hedge funds are making huge profits from speculation over Greece's future while ordinary workers face having their pay, jobs, pensions and public services slashed.

look at tax avoidance by the rich as well
Will they really all leave ?
As for no money etc i never had you down as so gullible you feel for the TINA argument
ps well done for the excellent restarint on waiting till the first poster had posted befor einsulting their grasp of the situation. I am pretty sur eyour approach will help win them over to your point of view. Have the diplomatic core not got your e-mail address yet?
Educate yourself - can you give me any examples wher ethat particualry pedagogy has been universally applied?
you really are a charmless little ****er arent you?

Right, cos you've got me down as some sort of anarchist thug, haven't you? Interesting that you've come to that conclusion, in spite of never having met me. Even though I've invited you to come for a pint and a chat, many times.

The reason I'm not there myself is cos I'm doing some work for someone today. Otherwise I would be. As I was at the education cuts protests last year. You, on the other hand, will only ever be feeling brave from behind a keyboard. Just as well for the internet, eh?

I saw them marching down Oxford St, I was spending money in capatilist department stores...
it's a joke, they walk along in their hoodies with their new-age-bandito scarves over their mouths, drinking cans of San Miguel - caring enough to make their voices heard but too scared to put their face to the cause.
they got to Topshop, which was shut, threw some pink paint, what appeared to be a red light-saber and let off a green smoke bomb, then stood there for about 20 minutes wondering what to do next.
they don't know what the **** they are even there for!! anarchy in moderation...
amateurs without a cause...

It gets almost tedious to have to repeat it, but Financial Institutions paid FIFTY TWO BILLION POUNDS into the exchequer last year. That's ELEVEN PERCENT of the total UK tax take.

How did they manage this? By MAKING LOTS OF MONEY and PAYING FIFTY PERCENT OF THEIR PROFITS in tax.

How will EVEN MORE MONEY go to the exchequer and get the public finances back on track? By stripping away regulation that will allow them to make EVEN MORE PROFIT so they can pay EVEN MORE MONEY in tax.

Sorry for the shouty capitals, but some ears are willfully deaf, it would seem.

Pity your sense of aesthetics isn't as acute as your hearing though eh Wopster?

You're a coward. There's no way you'd say owt what you do on here, to someone's face. No way. Surrey Hills ride last year; you'd bin slagging me off on here, I'd offered to buy you a pint, discuss things face to face, but when you had the opportunity to do so, you chose to remain silent. T'was only afterwards when you'd posted a pic of yourself, did I realise who you were.

If you can't do it for real, then maybe doing it online is your only means of expression. Pathetic.

Woppit; you're a Human Being, and deserving of respect equal with anyone else. But you need to learn to respect others more, simple as.

Maybe if you actually liked yourself more, you'd be able to do so. Just an idea, like.

If you came for a pint with me, you never know, I might find something about you I liked. That would be of enormous benefit to you, I'm sure. It's nice to be liked.

Barclays, they performed a little better, but how much of the profit they make (backed by the UK taxpayer and the bad debt guarentee scheme) is shared wit hthe country?

Well just £113M in 2009. This article suggests Barclays dodge about £1B in taxes per year.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article5908523.ece

THAT'S why there is protesting today. With figures like that we would seem better off (through reduced risk) if the banks moved abroad.

Here's an intersting quote.

Despite being rescued by taxpayers during the crash, UK banks will avoid paying £19 billion of tax on future profits by offsetting their losses during the financial crisis against their tax bills. This is equivalent to more than £1,100 for every family in the UK, a TUC report says today (Feb 2oth 2011).

The TUC report - The Corporate Tax Gap - says that as well as benefitting from an £850 billion bailout from taxpayers and the Bank of England during the recession, banks are able to offset their £19 billion [cash value] of tax losses between 2007 and 2009 against paying tax on future profits.

The report, authored by tax specialist Richard Murphy, has calculated this double subsidy from the accounts of five UK high street banks - HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Lloyds TSB and HBOS (later Lloyds Banking Group) - and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) data

So, how much better off ARE we for having 'A banking led economy'? It feels like we are over-reliant, owners of huge amouts of risk....and worst of all the government didn't even realise the risk!

Of course there is plenty of alternatives - and the course taken by the tories is the most damaging possible.

Taxation could be increased, tax avoidance stopped, spending on vanity projects (nukes etc) reduced or stopped, no more military adventurism outside of our borders,

Don't be fooled by the rhetoric - there are many alternative paths - which way you go is a political choice.

Well, there I was, mopping the lino, and I suddenly thought - given my age and the opportunities available, I'm never going to enjoy the level of replete lifestyle enjoyed by the Philip Greens and Tchenguiz brothers of this world, so the question I asked myself is - why am I so exercised about defending the system that enables what is looking to me like what can only be described as their gluttony?

Hmmmmmm. Interesting.

And I recall being in favour of the poll tax riots when I was penniless and living in a squat, so how did I get from there to here?

That's rhetorical, but if you've an opinion, go ahead...

I think the bit by me is the best spot to start from! 🙂

Actually, Woolwich wouldn't be a bad start/finish point, I tell you for why:

Anyone coming in from outside London could get on a Riverbus boat from central London, as they take bikes, if they fancied a nice treat, and it goes to Woolwich. Only a few quid, and a lovely journey. You can use an Oyster card on it too. And you could take it back into town at the end of the ride of course, into the sunset...

It's just an idea.

Ok, so how many lives did those Financial Institutions save? How many fires did they put out? How many children did they educate, toilets did they clean, bricks did they lay, etc?

Just because an institution overvalues itself, and others are naive or foolish enough to go with that valuation, doesn't mean it is that valuable.
