" if you were offended by it then don't look at it but to report it to the mods is taking the "I'm offended, ban it now" stance in my opinion. So you were offended?, bully for you!, I consider Stephen Fry has the correct response for this situation"

You're railing pretty hard at those people who are offended by the perv threads and who report them to the mods for that reason. Have we established that any such people actually exist?

It was a response to "emsz" as she reported the thread due to the fact she took offence to it.

Does this mean it is only ok to use pictures of women if I am trying to sell stuff? I have some stuff I need to sell soon.

If you re-read this thread then you will find that such people do exist.

I'd say mandatory.
Probably explains why those sheds aren't shifting and keep getting reduced.

I'll make a Paypal donation if my stuff sells then. Any men or women want to volunteer to be exploited for my financial gain?

I am an equal opportunities offender and terms of employment will be equally bad regardless of your age, sex and religion if that sets your mind at ease.

having posed in nothing but a tyre mankini and a dapper 'tache to raise lots of money for mens cancer charities, I have no issues with prostituting my self to earn you some cash. How do you want me, draped over a frame with a cheeky wink or holding a bar end and looking all manly and lustful?

Actually that means I may have been viewed as a sexytime object by pervy* men and women.....can i be offended now? 😕

* they would need to be very perverted to see me as a sexytime object 😆

Sorry, realised I missed this gem from earlier:

The kylie (recent) thread wasn't about her music at all.

I wasn't aware she was known for her music.

easy, I'll mount them to my frontage using some anodised purple bolts in the existing holes(for the retro bike market) and pose firmly grasping the bar, whilst wearing a rapha and nice walz works cap. May convince people that it'll only mount on a retro 150mm stem though 😆

"talented and gorgeous to boot"

Surely this could include blokes? - but i'd guess the on STW less guys would be condsidered gorgeous...

I think I'd have greater issues with peoples definition of talented tbh.

"The kylie (recent) thread wasn't about her music at all."

That was purely to point out to Emsz that the thread wasnt pretending to be anything other than a thread full of nice pictures.

Nobody was trying to pretend to like her music (as it was suggested)

Everybody was being perfectly open and honest, just looking at some nice pictures.

No music was mentioned.

As Emsz said.....

.... Perv by all means, but at least be honest about it.

See - this is where it becomes difficult.
I got banned the other evening on that thread for posting the picture of Monica Bellucci.
No nudity, no boobs, wearing a full length dress - so in no way a "pervy" or even slightly "risque" and certainly SFW, yet post removed during me doing an edit to include Pat Benetar so I got the ban extended as they decided I posted it twice!
For me it's quite simple - overtly racist, porn, etc - fine delete it but really... there was more "NSFW" on the adverts here than that thread and the mods are IMHO heavy handed on this forum with regards to what "they" feel is against their rules.

This accounts for the message I got about posting up some publicity photos for Alison Hannigan, Willow in Buffy, The Vampire Slayer. I assume someone got all bent out of shape because one was her in slightly saucy high school girl clothing, a reference to her character, which she was playing when in her twenties, and another in a bikini top. None were NSFW, all had been used loads of times, including on here, by me, in the past. I sadly missed the later part of the female singer thread, I could have posted up a whole bunch, taken by me, of attractive singers on stage, but I guess, because I'm male, and happen to find some singers particularly attractive, some might take offence at what just happens to be a happy coincidence. I don't have to be able to see Laura Marling, Julie Fowlis, Emiliana Torini, The Staves, or Katzenjammer, among many, to enjoy what they do, but it's nice in a live environment to watch attractive people performing music that one enjoys.
Is that so offensive to some people?

I reckon some regular bighitter type forumites should get their belly out and write "cotic Soul" or sommat on their bellies in lipstick and upload a photo to the ad bits. that'd be good.

EDIT: I didn't know you could get combat ready lightsabres! where do I sign up?

I think it's quite clear that their values only extend as far as their wallet. Paid for adverts depicting racy images of overtly sexualised attractive women are all ok, but dare a forumite post so much as a picture of a woman in a long dress....

Of course, they have limited control on what they show on their website though, so that makes these double standards perfectly ok. Sex sells.

Perhaps if they were serious about this then the "report post" button could also appear under each advert.

You sound pretty offended by it.

People who don't like perv threads: humorless pc douchebags who should stop whining and realize the world doesn't revolve around them. They should htfu if they want to read about yoghurt-knitting.

People who don't like their perv threads being binned: Voltairean martyrs whose multiple whines about the mods' decisions about what's good for the mods should be respected. They should not htfu and go elsewhere for perving.

Think what you like but I'm making a serious point. We're as anonymous as we choose to be here. The reality is the persona we display on here isn't necessarily who we really are. I can be anyone I want to be and get offended about anything.
The real world isn't moderated. If someone offends you on the street, tough shit. Stop being so sensitive and get over it.
No offense meant to emz, just using you as an example. Soz.

I have never reported a thread, although there have been times, using my phone, where I've accidentally hit the report button, but I've always cancelled. It would have to be something really, really offensive, but I'm sure others would get there before me anyway.

Perhaps, but women are seen more in our society as objects, not people.

They're really not.

Didn't say it was. I said the agent provocateur advert of her riding the bucking bronco more or less is.
. Well, it was outwardly sexy, making reference to men not being able to stand up in the cinema due to having an erection. That wouldn't have worked if it was David Beckham in stockings and suspenders, would it. But it was advert selling sex, not packets of crisps.

re the talented and gorgeous thread.

I love music, and music threads on here, you can normally find stuff you haven't listened too before, and that's v cool. That thread wasn't about music (otherwise there would have been links) it was about How The Women Looked.

Now, I've said this before in this thread, and I'll say it again, I don't mind nakedness, we are beautiful.I don't care about the kylie thread (she doesn't do it for me, but whatever) beacuse I know what it is, and I can avoid it.

Read the Nicole Cooke rant, she says it better than me.

I am sure we know it, but the biggest problem here is consistency. Whilst some get half clad laddies (lucky) some get sheds (maybe not so lucky) some of us get marking tape (me, why??)
It was never anyone intention to offend, form, style, function is one's own interpretation (why do we have so many wheel sizes)
But if a photo, is not banned in the first place, how can one say it is banned in another?

Right.

The issue is not with the pictures, it's with the intent behind the pictures.

There is and I think always has been a tendency for MEN to imagine women as simply a place to put one's penis, without considering the woman as a human being. I didn't really understand this at all til I spent a summer working with the council 😯 Now, if a man is talking like this about any pretty woman, then it would be reasonable to see it as a slight against woman-kind.

Now I'm sure there are many women who like to be treated as a sex object, but there are a great many who do not. So when men are behaving as above, it is offensive and a little upsetting.

I think this is down to what could be the underlying issue on which the feminist struggle is based. Most men could overpower most women and treat them as a sex object if they wanted, because on average we are bigger and stronger. I think this results in an underlying tension in many male/female interactions. On my last project at work for instance my two colleages were three inches taller than me, putting me in the unusual position of having to constantly look up at people during the ocnversation. It felt rather strange, and it did make me wonder about the gender balance.

So if you are 5'4 and 9st, and there's a 6'2 15st bloke talking in a very unpleasant way about rough sex, that must surely be quite indimidating.

So when you read a thread full of blokes oohing and aahing over women's looks, I can easily imagine how all the above issues would come to mind. It's all about baggage. I'm sure the majority of middle class STWers are quite enlightened and mostly feminist themselves, but it's important to remember that the readership doesn't know this generally, so whilst you are simply admiring a beautiful face from an aesthetic point of view, this is not always obvious. Especially if read by a woman who might have (or in fact probably has) experienced a lot of negativity in this particular area.

In fact most of the posters here are probably so middle class that they don't see anything wrong at all with what they are doing.

I have skimmed the thread in question, and there are some really beautiful people on it. But given all the unavoidable baggage associated with the act of admiring women in a non-personal context and over the internet, it's perhaps best to steer clear in case you upset someone without meaning to.

It's all well and good to say 'well I should be able to admire women without being considered sexist'. Yes, you should, but you can't, so don't. Simply doing it anyway isn't going to improve the situation.

No-one. That's why tact and sensitivity are required. It's the internet, and what we write could be taken in a number of different ways.

I'm going to give it one more go.

I really really don't care what you choose to look at, what I got pee'd off about was the fact that yet again on a thread pretending to be about music ( talented) they were actually discussing looks ( gorgeous) . Male musicians wouldn't be talked about like that. Men can't seem to see past whether a woman is "pretty" or not, doesn't matter if she's a brain surgeon, or whatever, men just seem to go " yeah, whatever, nice tits..." The images on there were just "pretty" women with nothing about their music, no links no albums references nothing.

The point I'm making ( very badly) is if you're going to Perv, then Perv, don't pretend to be admiring those musicians for their music when really, secretly , you just fancy a bit... Ok?

That's why mostly I don't care about the Kyle thread, I know it's not trying to be anything other than pictures of her in her pants ( someone buy that woman some clothes). But just don't dress up your perving as something else.

Every group of girls I've taught has contained females with a crush on some star or other. Take That, Boyzone (or however it's spelt). The conversation generally turns around how hunky they are and what it would be like to... .
