Liking the link ratty - obviously, as I'm from Barnsley, I must be into pigeon racing. You really are that predictable then.
😆 @ binners
Well, when you're not being hypnotised by the shiny lights of Batley 😉
overthrow parliamentary democracy
I stand open to contradiction, but I think that the hunting ban was part of the manifesto against which that government were elected, as opposed to the total annihalation of a particular industry and segment of society, which as I recall was never openly admitted to as being a policy.
aren't keyboards great-- a scabby ratcatcher can squeal as loud and long as he wants-- what i don't get is how those who love the tories yet are screwed by them as well, come to terms with themselves--save blaming their fellow workers who have the dignity and integrity to fight back.
I suppose their is nothing like a mind set against itself....
a scabby ratcatcher can squeal as loud and long as he wants
Yeah, perhaps I should "shut up" and "show some respect" instead? 😉
Well a bit of self respect might be a start
I keep hearing advocates of 'You shouldn't speak badly of the dead'. But history is full of the doings of nasty people. Ghengis Khan and Machiavelli will do as examples. Is there something like a sliding scale, whereby you can speak the truth after ten years for a magalomanic mass murderer like Stalin: six weeks for the nasty grubby little killers like West and Huntley?
The witch is dead. She shut down whole areas of industry without a care for what the unemployed would do. We have to make sure this isn't forgotten, that these actions are properly attributed to the party that she headed. I wonder if the party might prefer them to be buried with her.
I'm sure that more tories could be squeezed into the coffin.
I'm sure that more tories could be squeezed into the coffin.
Chingford Bonehead springs to mind..
I was a miner
I was a docker
I was a railway man
Between the wars
I raised a family
In times of austerity
With sweat at the foundry
Between the wars
I paid the union and as times got harder
I looked to the government to help the working man
And they brought prosperity down at the armoury
"We're arming for peace me boys"
Between the wars
I kept the faith and I kept voting
Not for the iron fist but for the helping hand
For theirs is a land with a wall around it
And mine is a faith in my fellow man
Theirs is a land of hope and glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor
Theirs are the skies all dark with bombers
And mine is the peace we knew
Between the wars
Call up the craftsmen
Bring me the draughtsmen
Build me a path from cradle to grave
And I'll give my consent
To any government
That does not deny a man a living wage
Go find the young men never to fight again
Bring up the banners from the days gone by
Sweet moderation
Heart of this nation
Desert us not, we are
Between the wars.
And they brought prosperity down at the armoury
"We're arming for peace me boys"
Never a truer word. Go on Billy!

There is some truth in the above slowoldgit, but less in the below (IMO)

There is an interesting piece in The Guardian from Philip Hensher on what Britain would be like without Thatcher which is interesting if only as a giggle.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/09/britain-without-margaret-thatcher
The conclusion is perhaps more relevant and hard hitting
By now, we would probably be roughly where we are. Surely, someone else would have made the reforms, or some of them, anyway. But it would not have happened in exactly the same way, and some of it would not have happened at all. Perhaps we would be waiting six months for a mobile telephone, and paying the bills to the post office, headed by the Postmaster General – I don't believe it would be a very advanced telephone, either. Perhaps there would be three TV channels and the requirement for a licence before you could use the internet. Some people see possibilities, and transform the world for good or ill; most of us rely on what has gone before, and perpetuate the ordinary. If Thatcher had never lived, some of her revolution would have taken place anyway. It had to. All of it? No. What you think of that revolution is entirely up to you.
I saw a newspaper picture from the political
campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously
in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips
Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down
When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal
And now the cynical ones say that it all ends
the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and
dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful
discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up
for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you"
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you
haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down
the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame
Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord
your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms
and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life
could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the
dirt down
Are you telling me she cared for the masses of unemployed? That she sought to provide new opportunities?
Is it worth it
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boys birthday
Its just a rumour that was spread around town
By the women and children
Soon well be shipbuilding
Well I ask you
The boy said dad they're going to take me to task
But I'll be back by christmas
Its just a rumour that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The result of this shipbuilding
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls
Its just a rumour that was spread around town
A telegram or a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
Once again
Its all were skilled in
We will be shipbuilding
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls
I hate it when

Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Though you may be far away
We think of you
There's no one quite like Grandma
And I know you will agree
That she always is a friend to you
And she's a friend to me
There's no one quite like Grandma
She's there in times of need
Before it's bedtime, on her knee
To us a book she'll read
Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Though you may be far away
We think of you
And one day when we're older
We'll look back and say
There's no one quite like Grandma
She has helped us on our way
Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
There's no one quite like Grandma
A love we always share
At party time and Christmas too
We know that she'll be there
There's no one quite like Grandma
She always has a smile
She never hurries us along
Just stays a little while
Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Though you may be far away
We think of you
And one day when we're older
We'll look back and say
There's no one quite like Grandma
She has helped us on our way
Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Grandma, we love you
And we know you love us too
The idea that nationalised industries don't advance technology is flawed, I think.

NOBODY READS THEM!!
I've just walked past a telly and I do believe the labour leader is wearing Black. WT(F)?
Why all this for Thatch? I remember other leaders dying (eg. Heath, Wilson) and the country didn't go completely bonkers like this.
That InterCity 125 still looks pretty to me. 😳
Tommy Flowers might disagree with you.
Why all this for Thatch?
Because she enormously advanced the cause and massively swelled the bank accounts of those in real power - the bankers, media barons, boardrooms and the establishment - the ones who make the decisions about such things
If she'd been, as a politician, a true woman of the people - increasing equality, providing opportunity for all, and overseeing social justice and the development of a true meritocracy - they'd have just thrown her in a skip. In fact... sod that... they'd have had her bumped off before she got chance to do any of that 😉
*makes note not to paste lyrics that don't rhyme again*
from that there twitter;

In the end, all a person can do is try to live their life in such a way that it doesn’t require 700 armed guards to protect their coffin.
now there's a mantra for life

It's an APT. A complete shambles.
It's an APT. A complete shambles.
Dammit - my basic train identification course fails me again!
That APT is pretty... 😳
HA HA Trainspotters the lot of you
To be fair, it does have 'APT' written on the front of it.
Which is always a clue.
That's Michael Heseltine. Is he dead too? And was he really a lady?
I hope they cut the head off, just in case.
Also it says APT on the picture.
(APT is a long and messy story but at the end of the day it was an experimental design pushed into use too fast, and canned mostly because of negative perception rather than reality, rather than being allowed to complete its development. But a lot of the tech went on to be succesful, and current tilting trains in the UK are no faster.
blair reckons she inspired him !!- hope he doesn't take as long to croak
satans butt plug
plays the assist - see i am lefty so a giver
EDIT: Well that went well - like my policies it sounded good in theory but it just does not work in reality
One thousand
Well she did at least inspire a huge thread on here about herself!
I'm concerned that holding her funeral in such a place could create problems, not just for all the businesses in that are which will be disrupted, but because of the possibility of any protest becoming violent. Wouldn't it have been better to hold it somewhere a lot quieter and easier to police?
Aren't the current Pendelino trains an engineering descendent of the APT?
Stop being so bloody neutral junkyard!
1003!
oh.
*waits for 2000 to come up*
Just ask Veolia to do the job.
Nice one Kimbers. Like it.
top man Yunki !!
Been on nights so lots of catching up on this thread. Heard and read lots more about her in last few days of course.
The bit that stood out for me was the soundbite from sometime after she left no 10 where she talks about how every politician can understand that one might be stabbed in the back, but she couldn't get over or forgive how it happened to her.
For me that brought it all home that irrespective of her policies (which as part of the stupid and impertinent lefty club I of course mostly didn't agree with), she was driven beyond all common sense. No doubt that the 150 or so Conservative MP's in less than safe seats and her own cabinet were right to get her out before she lost them the next election and still she couldn't see how she had brought this ousting upon herself. We don't need political changelings like Blair, Clegg and Cameron, but we really don't need rigid and uncompromising ones either.
..... she talks about how every politician can understand that one might be stabbed in the back, but she couldn't get over or forgive how it happened to her.
Well that is something she had in common with Ted Heath then. He too couldn't get over or forgive how she stabbed him in the back.
But I'm surprised to hear that she was surprised.
After all, I would have expected that she, of all people, would have been fully aware of just how cold and ruthless Tory politicians can be.
The only tears she is known to have shed were ones of self pity.
that odious son --- embodies all her instincts and attributes-- selfishness, arrogance, conceit, and more bad habits than a coprophillic priest.
Do mean you don't like him then?
they say time is a great healer-- well this proves that its not the case.....the outpouring of hate towards her and her ilk is necessary

All very well if correct and informed, but I've seen and heard her criticised for planning to nuke Bueonos Aries invading Iraq, causing the ERM crash and a whole host of other bollox that Lefties love to spiel and blame anyone for with no basis in fact. Half those dancing in the streets were not even born during the good bit of her influence.
Baying 'Thatcher Thatcher Thatcher Dead Dead Dead,' is just crass and certainly not the sort of behaviour a fair society would wish to tolerate.

Well, i've seen and heard her praised for curing cancer, inventing the internet and having a great pair of baps and a whole host of other etc. etc.
Though the baps bit might be true
Baying 'Thatcher Thatcher Thatcher Dead Dead Dead,' is just crass and certainly not the sort of behaviour a fair society would wish to tolerate.
Unfortunately, we don't have a fair society.
Tum ti tum...
Half those dancing in the streets were not even born during the good bit of her influence.
That may be true, together with the other half eulogising her not even being born during her influence.
Which "good bit" was that? The leaving of Downing Street?
'Thatcher Thatcher Thatcher Dead Dead Dead,'
that's pretty catchy actually.. 😀
I lived and suffered through the Thatcher era, and I'm celebrating the fact that the Great Leveller finally caught up with her.
Half those dancing in the streets were not even born during the good bit of her influence.
So you think Britain is no longer influenced by that "unique and towering figure" ?
Well that's very much a minority point of view - both the Government and HM Opposition's official position is that her legacy lives on.
And I think it is probably fair to say that even the lives of young people today have been affected by her premiership.
Let's not forget the role (s) played by her colleagues in the cabinet. Messrs Howe, Lawson, Major and lamont. Mr Tebbit, Mr Fowler, Mr Parkinson, Mr Hurd Mr Redwood. Mr Whitelaw, Mr Heseltine, Mr Clarke Mrs Currie, Mr Pym. I could go on.. they're all to blame along with the conservative party financiers

So we can look forward to another 14 threads like this one then, gordimhor? 😉
Can we make it 13? Hesaltine looks exactly like my granddad, so he can't be all bad.
they're all to blame along with the conservative party financiers
Very true. And I also like to remember the responsibility of those who voted Conservative, without them none of it would have been possible.
Glenda does well, Bercow is cool
Is Glenda drunk there or is that her normal mannerisms?....frightening if that gets to vote on policy!
that
Classy as ever.
frightening if that gets to vote on policy!
As opposed to the baying sycophantic amoebas (or in my words ****in tory ****stains) on the opposite bench?, give me 650 "Glenda Jacksons" to populate the house of commons and i'll give you a fair and just society
Is Glenda drunk there or is that her normal mannerisms?....frightening if that gets to vote on policy!
Yeahh, her mannerisms are the relevant 🙄
Did you find it difficult to understand?
Hopefully there will be no more threads like this, all our politicians from now on will be honest, intelligent and compassionate, they will be voted for by a pub lic who like and respect them and we will all be slim biking wonder kids riding dry trails:-)
Baying 'Thatcher Thatcher Thatcher Dead Dead Dead,' is just crass and certainly not the sort of behaviour a fair society would wish to tolerate.
We don't have a fair society. She had a major hand in how the people of this country behave.
We don't have a fair society.
We don't have a society, there is no such thing, only individuals.
Scotland requested that they be allowed to do the honors, specifically because they wished to ensure that Thatcher had actually died. Plans for the Scottish funeral involved a 21 cannon salute carried out by the artillery detachment of the Black Watch. Rather than use blanks, the Black Watch would fire live high explosive shells directly into Thatcher's coffin. The coffin's remains would then be gleefully urinated upon by drunken members of the Scottish public. Most Scots feel that this would be an appropriately solemn farewell to the dictator they so adore. The way in which Thatcher’s corpse will be disposed has not yet been decided. A whitepaper published in Science in 2009 discussed the viability of a number of options. On cremation, it stated that the corpse of a lich is notoriously difficult to burn, and attempting to burn the body of the arch-lich herself would undoubtedly result in failure. Burial was also considered, but the estimated cost to prevent the inevitable haunting of the area surrounding the burial site was deemed to be too high. The subject would need to be buried below a bloodstone 2.5km in diameter, which itself would need to be sealed via sacrificing the lives of 250 union members atop the aforementioned stone. Experts in the field are currently looking towards recent advancements in nuclear waste storage, and 2.5% of the UK budget is put aside annually for ongoing research and development into the potential solutions to Thatcher Storage.
On uncyclopedia...I lol'd.
Hmmm... My respect for Glenda Jackson has just increased massively.
Deviant, are you from the 1970s?
Just seen it on the news. Agree with Coyote about Glenda Jackson. At least she is stopping the specially convened session of parliament sounding like a 7 hour love in.

That took some real integrity - obviously completely inspired by the late great maggie fatcha
10 key quotes from Glenda Jackson's speech on the former Prime Minister
Typical, shortchanging us again there are only 9 quotes.
Well the good news is that Ding Dong The wicked Witch is Dead is now number 1 in iTunes chart and looking set to be the UK number 1 for next week 🙂
But I'm surprised to hear that she was surprised.
That surprises me, ernie, as I thought it was well known that she was so sure of her victory in the leadership election that she didn't even bother attending in person.
