Despite the furor, a slow carb diet seems to genuinely be the golden ticket to weight loss and good clean energy, for me at least
I understand that the occasional diet soda pop is permited, but how many is too many?
Can you chug back all day long?
Despite initial reservations im well into my black tea now, but I also like a glass or two of 'no added sugar' orange squash a day.. can I get away with this? (I think I know the answer to that one actually)
Also, sugar-free items in general, for example - chewing gum.
The packet on my desk contains the following artificial sweetners:
Sorbitol
Xylitol
Mannitol
Malititol Syrup
Aspartame,
Acesulfame K
Im aware how nasty aspartmame is for example, but im more concerned over the effect of using 'false' sugars on your metabolism.
Does anyone have any experience of stubborn weight loss depsite eating/drinking the correct things - whilst still consuming sweeteners?
Can they really fool your body into thinking you are loading up on carbs?
The 4 Hour body book wich had a very similar diet plan advised limiting them to <500ml a day as they had some similar effects to 'real' sugar on insulin production which is what you're trying to limit on those diets.
Blast..
Better enjoy this can of diet vegetable extract flavoured soda then..
I suppose its a case of less is more with regards to chewing gum etc too?
What's wrong with Aspartame then?
but im more concerned over the effect of using 'false' sugars on your metabolism.
I saw Stefan whatsit (the cooking the danger zone guy) do a demonstration with diet drinks and appetite showing how people who who drink them tend to eat more. Something about your appetite not being fooled by the sweetener - if you taste the sweetness you seek out the calories that it promises. To illustrate split a rugby team into two groups, gave half full fat coke and half diet then let them loose on a buffet. The diet coke group took larger portions.
I think psychologically too - if you are on any sort of exclusion diet either for weight or because of alergies or whatever - don't do substitutes, its better to change your diet, your palette and your habits. If you stop eating 'x' you'll forget about 'x' in a week or so. If you eat 'substitute x' it just leaves you hankering for the real thing.
I used to drink a lot of diet cola. Mainly because I got sick of water and I don't like tea/coffee.
While I'm not back on the eating-plan-that-dare-not-speak-its-name (just yet), I've recently had more diet cola. It may be the caffeine, or it may be something else, but it seems to have coincided* a whole load of heart palpitations.
Time to get right back into that way of eating!

Has the "Shamed One" re-appeared since that thread?
cynic-al - MemberHas the "Shamed One" re-appeared since that thread?
please be less cryptic,
do you mean idave- what was the thread?
last i saw he was complaining about the assosciation between meat heavy diets and cancer that got him a bit annoyed
Yes and no: the thread where various people had issues with services he'd contracted to supply them.
that is a good link ^^^
Basically on the iDiet you should avoid anything insulinogenic (except on your day off obviously).
There is of course the wider question of health beyond simple fat loss. I'm of the opinion you should be putting as few chemicals into your body as possible. Do you need sweeteners at all? Personally I found it was easier to stick to the diet by cutting them out entirely. As a bonus, I think my taste sensitivity improved so "normal" food tasted better after a while.
The "no added sugar" orange squash will have a lot of sugar in it naturally so that should be avoided. But then you knew that!
thanks folks.
Aye, my taste buds are coming back strong, and I didnt think i'd be enjoying edamame beans and 3 bean sald with mint every single day..but I do.
The simple things I miss the most, ketchup, brown sauce, sausages, and now, orange squash.. I know that there are similar alternatives, but you know how it is.
In the evening I like a bit 'more' than cold water, and only fancy red wine occasionally.
The trade off is that im less bloated, and feel much healthier.
Sausages - well, decent ones - aren't that bad!
Am back on it tomorrow. And this time for keeps.
If nothing else, it's made me fully realise the simple carb/sugar addiction that we all fuel.
Its been a revelation realising that you can easily & comfortably live a sugar free lifestyle once youve gone cold turkey for a week or so
