Middle class rant alert:

Tescos are now putting all spirits into a security net and then all bottles go into a locked security cabinet in a bid to stop theft....I've no issue with these measures. They do however remove the boxes from the decent whisky as the nets don't go over them and proceed to dispose of the boxes.

I've mentioned this to staff on the last 4 occasions I've been in to buy a bottle but they pretty much just shrug it off or provide an apology on behalf of the store.

I've paid for the box though, and in some cases these boxes most likely constitute a few ££ worth of the whole value so I feel I have a reasonable argument to either obtain the box or get some money off?? There's also the potential you are giving this as a gift so want it for presentation.

I couldn't be bothered to get the manager down over it today but I may do next time. My wife thinks I'm being an entitled arse which no doubt I am.

As first world problems go, it’s up there

Where do you live? Salford 6?

Could you not just buy it somewhere else other than Tesco?

I like the boxes as they sit on my whisky shelf and look nice in the kitchen.

i am with you OP, i want my boxes! I’ll probably buy elsewhere if that happens at my Tesco.

I don't drink whisky so when I buy its always as a present - for that reason I would always want the box.....so that would be a thumbs down for Tesco from me.

This is Tesco in Milton Keynes so not exactly the ghetto but they still get their share of thieves. I think it's going to be a nationwide security roll out measure to all their stores.

Just buy elsewhere.

Tesco, and every other supermarket, seems to have an massive and growing issue with theft of these things.*

.

.

*Source: son who works in Tesco in a nice place, so groups of crims are arriving in a few cars, striding in, clearing the shelves of valuable products, and striding out again, departing in different directions...

I'm not too concerned about the box, but what's inside the bottle, is it me or is Talisker and Jura now not tasting quite as they should?

there is no such thing. OP has been caught out. 😂 Seriously, do yourself a favour and go to Waitrose or just buy it online.

The nets are better than those stupid blue-and-clear plastic covers which almost always jam, sending the one poor sod on the scan-as-you-go section scurrying off to the other side of the store for a replacement bottle.  They make it a pain in the ass to scan the barcode though.

I hadn't noticed the boxes had gone.  That'd be irritating if I were buying a gift.

I think it’s a valid point too.

i also don’t think the weird plastic netting stuff works. I’ve seen about a dozen littered around here that have been cut off and discarded in the bushes in the roads around the store.

It's not plastic, it's steel wire.  I know what you're referring to I think, this is different.

Go to Lidl. Even the one in the centre of Sheffield that used to be Sports Direct, asks if you want the cardboard box. I wouldn't normally bother, but it was a gift for someone so thought I'd go posh and get the box.

They do good deals on whisky via their Clubcard though.

Sorry, I'll take that one off to the Dull Men's Club too.

Ah. We just have the steel-netted bottles but on the shelves as before.

they must’ve been suffering some significant shrinkage to do this. A fair amount of labour to put things in nets, reduced product recognition, and a palaver at the till. Just as well Tesco’s limited range isn’t that appealing except for the occasional  clubcard offer.

My wife thinks I’m being an entitled arse which no doubt I am.

Lucky girl, she's married to a bloke who buys whisky by the box load and berates shop assistants. I can't believe she's not more grateful to have received God's gift...

Tesco local to me have the security tag round the bottle neck with the bottle in the box.

Agree that there are some really good Clubcard deals though.

My local Morrisons has the whiskies all locked up in a massive cabinet in the shelf run, but at least they're still in their boxes.

Dunno, but as I get a decent discount with my Clubcard, I frankly don’t give a toss! Neither do I care much about the box - I’m pretty sure that a box on a bottle of whiskey amounts to about 50p.

The irritating thing is after all that you still need to steal a paper bag from the bakery to complete the look.

We are going all Californian. The coffee was in a locked cupboard at Safeway last time I was there. The only bike shop I was in kept their front door locked to stop theft.

Whisky? Our Tesco still has the whisky in boxes. Middle class suburb though not MK.

As for Club Card discount? Usually only gets it down to the Amazon price. And of course for cooking whisky Amazon is under the MUP Price.  EG. Grouse Smoky Black. MUP £18.20. Amazon £16.20

I often ask them to keep the box, to avoid me storing it "just in case", so this doesn't bother me personally - but I fully support your right to have your nice box on the shelf.

We don't drink booze, but my wife likes some alcohol free gin on occasion, that's also netted due to theft issues and she's even been age checked for it! At her age getting asked for id is a compliment though lol!

Nope! Products get picked by pickers straight off the shelf of your local Tesco. Except in the rare cases where they have home deliveries straight from warehouses (I think Kent has one). Most are straight from the shelves of local stores.

What's the advantage of these weird security nets over the collars that go round the neck of the bottle?

Tesco whisky is nearly always dual priced as well.  A fine for not joining their data mine.    Sounds tinfoil but I saw a very worrying advert at Sainsbury on Monday for the Nectar app.  "prices selected just for you".  Sounds like a forerunner of dynamic pricing?

Two points.

1 The beauty of whisky is INSIDE the bottle.

2  Buy your whisky from your local independent  whisky shop
